Best Buy’s Pixel 3 sale might be unbeatable: $400 off for Black Friday Posted: 21 Nov 2018 05:32 PM PST At $799 and $899 respectively, Google's Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are the most expensive phones Google has ever made, and arguably also the best. But on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, you might be able to get $400 off either Pixel 3 — and you might be able to do it without chaining yourself to Verizon or trading in your current phone. You see, Verizon is offering that $400 off a number of flagship phones over the next two days, including the Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+, Note 9, LG V40, and the two new Pixel phones. With Verizon's deal, you'll only see that savings over the course of two years. But Best Buy just confirmed to The Verge that it will have its own version of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL deal, one where the $400 savings happens... |
Trump administration criticizes Chinese company’s attempted takeover of Faraday Future Posted: 21 Nov 2018 02:55 PM PST California-based electric car startup Faraday Future might have a strange new ally in its roiling fight with main investor Evergrande: the Trump administration. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) issued an update on Wednesday to its "Section 301" investigation into China's alleged practices of intellectual property theft and technology transfer, and Faraday Future was listed among the many examples cited in the refreshed report. The USTR says in the report that Evergrande's $2 billion pledge to Faraday Future is an "illustrative example" of how the Chinese government "directs and unfairly facilitates the systematic investment in, and acquisition of, US companies and assets by Chinese companies to obtain... |
Posted: 21 Nov 2018 02:23 PM PST China's biggest app, WeChat, partnered with InterContinental to open a smart hotel in Shanghai that lets users book rooms, remotely check in, and use their phones as key cards — all without requiring human assistance. Once they've completed their reservation, travelers verify their identity at the hotel through facial recognition and collect their digital key card. Although the hotel is 88 feet underground, it's connected enough to provide quick internet services, according to a press release it shared with The Verge. WeChat and its parent company Tencent have been working on developing smart hotel experiences since 2014, but now it's added facial recognition into the mix for faster identity checks. Traditionally, hotels in China require... |
Scientists fly through plumes of wildfire smoke to unravel its mysteries Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:45 PM PST Wildfire smoke hung in a hazy heavy cloud over parts of California this month, but it won't stay for much longer. Rain is in the forecast, which could bring some relief from the poor air quality that's blanketed parts of the state. But what happens to smoke after it is lofted into the air and starts interacting with air currents and weather is far more complicated than it might appear. The smoke that billows out from a wildfire is incredibly complex. In addition to solid particles like ash, there are gases and droplets of liquids, all loosely roiling up into the atmosphere. "Smoke is made up of lots of different things, and every single piece of smoke evolves differently." Emily Fischer,... |
Instagram’s new profile designs emphasize users instead of their follower count Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:16 PM PST Instagram announced on its press site today that the company is testing out new user profile layouts. "Over the next several weeks, you may see features re-arranged at the top of your profile including changes to icons, buttons and the way you navigate between tabs," the blog post explains. Your photo grids will be safe, though, so you can breathe easy. Examples of potential changes can be seen above. The most notable part of the redesign is that follower counts appear to be de-emphasized, as they're no longer at the top of your profile and are in a much smaller font. Twitter recently made a similar change to its iOS app, as the company thinks about how to prioritize "meaningful" conversation on the platform rather than focusing on... |
After delay, Verizon is reportedly getting eSIM support by early December Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:11 PM PST Verizon is close to adding dual SIM and eSIM support after an initial delay meant its network wouldn't be able to work with the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR's touted dual SIM capabilities. In an internal memo that was leaked to 9to5Mac, Verizon tells employees it's now expecting to launch dual SIM support with an eSIM and a physical SIM paired together in early December. Apple initially announced that Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T would all support dual SIMs. But Verizon customers ran into a snag: you can only use Verizon's physical SIM card for your primary line, and if you swap it over to your secondary line, the service gets downgraded to a 2G legacy network instead of LTE. As the carrier realized the secondary line won't be able to... |

The Verge’s guide to tolerable family streaming entertainment Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:56 AM PST It isn't always easy to pick something to watch if you're reuniting with your family over the holidays. Tastes vary radically between generations and individual family members, so does tolerance for sex, violence, profanity, conflict, religious or political messaging, or even specific genres. Each family is different, but in the wide world of streaming media, there's always going to be something that hits the sweet spot and saves you from having to endure NCIS or The Big Bang Theory again. With that in mind, The Verge staff has assembled a list of streaming films and TV shows that have created enthusiasm in our personal family viewing — or at least a tolerable detente. Maybe these recommendations can help you prepare some companionable... |
The best Black Friday 2018 phone deals at Best Buy, Walmart, and more Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:21 AM PST Black Friday is a great time to shop for phones, but unless you're buying an unlocked device, you have to keep one thing in mind: there are almost always strings attached. You have to activate a new line, or be slowly reimbursed the money, or trade something in to get nearly every one of these deals. That's frustrating, but it isn't always as bad as it sounds. If you're happy with your carrier, or if you planned to open a new line anyway, these confusing terms could very well work out. And it's a good time to be shopping, too. Basically all of the year's flagship phones came out in the last few months, so you can get deals on some of the best devices out there before they're at all out of date. Here's what you can find at the big stores... |
Facebook to appeal UK regulator’s Cambridge Analytica fine Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:06 AM PST Facebook is appealing the £500,000 fine levied by the UK's data watchdog over the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the social network has confirmed. It says the decision taken by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is unjustified, and that the regulator found no evidence that UK users specifically had their information improperly shared. The news comes on the day Facebook's right to appeal was due to expire. Facebook's lawyer, Anna Benckert, said that the ICO's fine "no longer relates to the events involving Cambridge Analytica" because it has found "no evidence" that Facebook users in the UK had their information shared with the analytics company. The lawyer's statement goes on to say that this broadens the reasoning behind... |
