Nintendo’s new content guidelines make it easier for YouTube creators to get paid

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:47 PM PST

Nintendo is lifting some of its heavy restrictions over how YouTube creators can monetize gameplay and livestream content with a new set of guidelines for creators announced on Wednesday evening.

YouTube creators who want to monetize their content no longer have to join Nintendo's controversial specific partner program. Instead, those who work within YouTube's Partner Program — a tier that allows the company to run ads on videos, letting creators earn ad revenue through Google's AdSense — will simply qualify. As part of the policy change, Nintendo is closing its Creators Program next month.

"As long as you follow some basic rules, we will not object to your use of gameplay footage and/or screenshots captured from games for which...

Audi’s E-Tron GT concept is a 590-horsepower electric sedan powered by Porsche

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:43 PM PST

Just two months after the debut of its first electric car, the E-Tron SUV, Audi has announced a new EV called the E-Tron GT Concept. It's a sleek sedan that gets its electric power from the same drivetrain and battery platform that will be in Porsche's first EV, the Taycan.

The concept was unveiled at this week's LA Auto Show, and will go on sale in just two years, with deliveries starting in early 2021, according to Audi. No pricing has been set.

Sitting on 22-inch wheels, the E-Tron GT takes power from a 90kWh battery pack and puts it into two electric motors (one on each axle). In total, that drivetrain creates 434 kilowatts of power, or 590 horsepower. That's good enough to go from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.4 seconds, according to...

US Army awards Microsoft with $480 million HoloLens contract

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:10 PM PST

The US Army has awarded Microsoft a $480 million contract to supply the military branch with as many as 100,000 HoloLens augmented reality headsets for training and combat purposes, according to Bloomberg.

Microsoft beat out other leading augmented reality headset companies, like Magic Leap, which announced that it would be joining the bidding process back in September. Microsoft has had the upper hand, focusing primarily on enterprise markets, unlike Magic Leap, which has focused on the barely-existent consumer market. Microsoft has also previously sold some headsets to the military. But this contract would go well beyond its earlier collaboration, and could greatly expand the reach of the headset.

High-end portable media player company Astell & Kern has announced two new sets of headphones — an over-ear closed back model in partnership with Beyerdynamic, and an in-ear model in partnership with Jerry Harvey Audio.

The over-ear model is the second generation of Beyerdynamic's highly acclaimed AK T5p headphones, which The Verge described in 2016 as "on the precipice of greatness." Visually, this new version of the AK T5p has a similar body style and, like its predecessor, is hand-built in Germany. The AK T5p 2nd Generation is tuned specifically for Astell & Kern's portable music players. That includes the audiophile-level $999 Kann, a 9.8 ounce behemoth with a 6,200mAh battery.

These headphones have the same Tesla transducers found...

These smart yoga pants promise to fix your poses at home

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:35 PM PST

A new smart clothing line promises to help you get your yoga moves right when you're at home and without an instructor. It's called Pivot Yoga and it claims to give feedback through small sensors on the clothes that can tell you whether you're in the right position.

"We know how hard it is to learn yoga, how much yogis want to improve, and how many yogis want to practice at home," Joe Chamdani, who's the CEO and co-founder of TuringSense, the developer behind Pivot Yoga, said in a press release.

The Pivot Yoga clothes are supposed to "look, feel, breathe, wash, and perform" like regular yoga clothes, but also maintain a wireless connection to the company's mobile app. You can take online yoga classes through the app and the sensors...

Apple says the iPhone XR is its best-selling phone, but doesn’t provide sales figures

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:27 PM PST

Apple vice president of product marketing Greg Joswiak has commented in an interview with CNET that the iPhone XR has "been our most popular iPhone each and every day since the day it became available," seemingly in an attempt to downplay analyst reports earlier this week that the iPhone XR was performing worse than Apple had intended.

It's the first official word from Apple as to how the new iPhones are performing. It arrives at a time when the company's lineup now includes its priciest phones ever — even the "budget" $750 XR costs more than any base model iPhone ever has — along with reports of slashed shipment orders earlier this month that have led to concerns that sales may be down.

T-Mobile and Sprint could face tough questions on merger deal from House lawmakers

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:11 PM PST

Earlier this year, T-Mobile and Sprint announced that they would merge. If approved, their combination would shrink the number of major wireless carriers in the United States from four to three. Now, 14 different organizations have penned a letter to Democratic House leaders requesting a hearing on the proposed merger.

The letter, which is signed by leaders of groups like the Open Markets Institute and Public Knowledge, was addressed to two of the most influential Democratic House lawmakers, Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ). Once the new Congress kicks off in January, both lawmakers will be chairing committees with oversight jurisdiction on the potential merger deals.

"Announcing hearings to examine the single largest...

Disney is turning the original Star Wars movies into animated shorts for children

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:10 PM PST

I'm the father of a five-year-old, and, like many parents, my wife and I have recently had to grapple with an age-old question: when is it appropriate to introduce your kid to Star Wars? Today, Disney made this question a lot easier to answer by announcing that it will launch a new series of kid-friendly animated shorts called Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures that will re-create classic moments from the film franchise. The first six shorts will launch on November 30th on a new website and YouTube channel dubbed Star Wars Kids.

The venture is clearly aimed at the youngest potential Star Wars fans. My first-generation iPad has gotten a lot of use over the past few years as a dedicated cartoon tablet for my son, and I've observed that he's...

Starbucks says it’ll block porn on its public Wi-Fi next year

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:28 PM PST

For years, Starbucks has caught flak for not preventing its customers from watching porn on its in-store Wi-Fi. Now the coffee retailer says that next year it will introduce a filter that prevents customers from viewing porn and other explicit material in stores, as first reported by Business Insider.

Starbucks said to The Verge, "While it rarely occurs, the use of Starbucks public Wi-Fi to view illegal or egregious content is not, nor has it ever been permitted...We have identified a solution to prevent this content from being viewed within our stores and we will begin introducing it to our US locations in 2019." While there aren't details on what the content filter is, Starbucks did say it had tested multiple methods.
