This app will show you your Apple Music listening habits for 2018

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 12:50 PM PST

Apple Music doesn't offer a packaged way to look at your yearly listening habits, but a new app does, as spotted by TechCrunch. Made by NoiseHub, the app is called "Music Year in Review," and shows an overview of what you listened to throughout the year on Apple Music, similar to Spotify's "Wrapped" program.

Music Year in Review isn't nearly as in-depth as Spotify's "Wrapped," but it does give you some basic metrics that could be fun to look at. To use it, enter your email address into the app and then connect it to Apple Music. It will then gather your listening data and show you three separate graphics: how much time you spent listening to your favorite artist on Apple Music, your top five songs and artists, and some of your overall...

LinkedIn co-founder says he unknowingly backed disinformation effort in Alabama Senate race

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 12:41 PM PST

Billionaire Reid Hoffman has acknowledged that he partially funded a group that used disinformation tactics in Alabama's 2017 special election in an effort to sink Republican candidate Roy Moore, according to The Washington Post. Last week, Facebook suspended five accounts linked to the operation for "engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior." One of those accounts belonged to Jonathon Morgan, CEO of cybersecurity company New Knowledge. Morgan has said he was acting alone as a researcher and not through New Knowledge.

The group Hoffman backed financially, American Engagement Technologies, used Facebook in a manner similar to the way Russia inserted itself into the 2016 US presidential election. They created misleading Facebook...

The Verge 2018 tech report card: Samsung

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 11:30 AM PST

Compared to the past couple of years, 2018 was a relatively uneventful 12 months for Samsung. The company largely kept on keeping on, stuck with what's been working for the past few years, and managed to avoid major product debacles or new corruption scandals.

The new product train started early in the year for Samsung, with the announcement of the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus in February. The S9 pair were direct follows to 2017's very successful Galaxy S8 phones, and Samsung didn't change much for the new models. They had newer processors and updated cameras, but looked almost identical to the prior year's phones. The S9 also debuted questionable software, such as the creepy AR Emoji – a hastily put together ripoff of Apple's Animoji.

‘Doomba’ turns your Roomba’s cleaning maps into Doom levels

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 10:36 AM PST

It's practically a rule in tech: If it has electricity, eventually it will run Doom. Now a Roomba might have been a bit tricky to work into that equation, given the lack of things like a screen, but game developer Rich Whitehouse has found a way with a new tool he calls "Doomba" that can take floor map data from the smart cleaning robots and convert it into Doom levels, according to Polygon.

The idea first started when Whitehouse and his wife were researching robot vacuums. Honestly, nothing will beat Whitehouse's own explanation for the tool's original, so I'll let him take it from here:

I soon realized that there was a clear opportunity to serve the Dark Lord by conceiving a plethora of unholy algorithms in service to one of the...

YouTube faces backlash on Twitter over lifted, uncredited holiday video

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 09:53 AM PST

When Lily Hevesh opened Twitter and saw YouTube's Christmas video, it looked very familiar. That's because it was her own.

YouTube's tweet doesn't credit Hevesh at all, or mention her YouTube channel. The tweet also cuts Hevesh's intro, which acts as a welcome to her channel for those who stumble upon the video. Hevesh's original video, uploaded to YouTube on December 23rd, has just over 60,000 views, but YouTube's lifted version boasts more than 250,000.

Hevesh, a professional domino artist, uses YouTube as, essentially, a specialized form of advertising for her work. You can see what her creations look like, if you want to hire her. By stripping out the attribution to Hevesh when it brought the video to a broader audience, YouTube's...

Washington Redskins reportedly backed out of Huawei Wi-Fi deal because of government concerns

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 09:48 AM PST

Another example of the US government's unease around Huawei — and efforts to keep the Chinese tech giant's influence at bay — was reported earlier this week by The Wall Street Journal. In 2014, Huawei reached a deal with the Washington Redskins to provide Wi-Fi in the viewing suites at FedEx Field during games, according to the story. But that agreement came undone after a government advisor issued an "unofficial federal complaint" to the team, citing the same national security concerns that Congress and US intelligence agencies have raised for several years running.

Huawei would have received advertising in the stadium and during Redskins game broadcasts in exchange for handling the Wi-Fi in suites; the Redskins never planned to...

The 40 games we can’t wait to play in 2019

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 09:00 AM PST

The year is almost over, which means it's time to start dreaming about all of the great games you'll be playing in 2019 — and it sure looks like there will be a lot. Next year is shaping up to be packed with notable releases, from the charming world of Animal Crossing to the violent action of Gears of War.

Of course, these are just the games we know about, and there will definitely be plenty of surprises throughout 2019. I've also only included games that are actually scheduled for next year, which is why you won't see big names like Metroid Prime 4, The Last of Us Part II, or Halo Infinite. Same goes for games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Death Stranding that are likely years away from release. Additionally, it's important to note that some...

The Verge 2018 tech report card: Google

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 08:30 AM PST

2018 should have been a banner year for Google. It marked the 20th anniversary of the company itself, the 10 year anniversary of Android, and the 10 year anniversary of Chrome. But 2018 has been a year of reckoning for most of the big tech giants, and the scales have fallen from everybody's eyes when they look at Google. From privacy to products to the treatment of its own employees and contractors, the banner is tattered.

I think the story of Google in 2018 is that it has lost some of the trust it previously enjoyed. It's not totally gone, but it's eroding — and most critically, that erosion appears to be happening from the inside out. Google's own employees are showing signs (sometimes literal protest signs) that they are losing trust...
