Adobe Lightroom CC for iOS just added the shortcut Apple promised Posted: 11 Jan 2019 05:21 PM PST Last October, when we first got our hands on the new iPad Pro, we saw a frustration coming a mile away: though this tablet is supposedly built for pros, you can't do something as simple as import photos directly into Adobe's Lightroom CC. That was still true when Nilay reviewed the tablet in November, but Apple said a workaround was coming — a Siri Shortcut that would automatically import photos from the camera roll into Lightroom, then delete them from the camera roll. Now, two months later, it appears that shortcut is here for both iPad and iPhone with an update to the Lightroom app: Only it doesn't actually delete the original photos from your camera roll after importing them. You've gotta set that up yourself by... |
SpaceX is laying off 10 percent of its workforce Posted: 11 Jan 2019 04:54 PM PST SpaceX will lay off 10 percent of its workforce, immediately following its first successful rocket launch of the year for satellite operator Iridium. The news, first reported by the Los Angeles Times and confirmed by SpaceX, suggests the company is under some financial pressure as it attempts to get two ambitious projects off the ground. More than 6,000 people work at SpaceX, according to the company's website. It's not clear which SpaceX divisions may have been affected. The company faces a busy year: testing its Crew Dragon for flying astronauts to the International Space Station, launching two Falcon Heavies, deploying its first Starlink satellites, and starting tests on its Mars-bound Starship. I... |
Exclusive: Verizon is quietly testing its own Netflix-style cloud gaming service Posted: 11 Jan 2019 03:12 PM PST Verizon is currently conducting alpha testing of Verizon Gaming, a game streaming service that would represent a major new initiative for the home and mobile internet giant. The Verge can report that Verizon Gaming is already up and running on the Nvidia Shield set-top box and will, according to the company's documentation, eventually make its way to Android smartphones. In either usage scenario, the service can be played using a paired Xbox One controller. Verizon has not publicly advertised Verizon Gaming or even really acknowledged its existence. Verizon has quietly been recruiting players to take part in the test, which currently involves over 135 games. Participants are promised a $150 Amazon gift card upon completion. They're given... |
The best creator tools from CES 2019 Posted: 11 Jan 2019 03:06 PM PST This year at CES, I noticed more of two things: portable, on-the-go tech that makes vlogging easier, and vloggers. There were gimbals and selfie sticks aplenty as people filmed themselves walking around on the show floor, making content for their own personal audiences. Looking at the wealth of cameras, lighting rigs, and artist devices, they all seemed to be encouraging the notion that anyone can become a "creator" just by posting a video on YouTube, or creating art to be shared online. I know tools don't make the artist, but coming across these new products, I felt a stir of excitement and aspiration. "Should I become a YouTuber?" I asked myself, before shaking away the impure thoughts. From updated versions of familiar products from... |
Apple’s 2018 iPad Pro is $100 off at Best Buy Posted: 11 Jan 2019 02:24 PM PST The Wi-Fi versions of Apple's 2018 iPad Pro are each $100 off at Best Buy. Whether you've got your eye on the 11 or 12.9-inch model, this is the biggest price drop that we've seen on the latest round of iPad Pro tablets. Both sizes feature a revised design over last year's model that pushes the bezels to the edge, squeezing out Touch ID in favor of Face ID. You'll also find a USB-C port on this model — the only mobile Apple product to adopt the standard. If you opt for the 11-inch model with 64GB of storage, you'll only pay $699 instead of its usual $799 price. Every model is $100 off until you get up in the storage capacity options. Both sizes of the 512GB and 1TB iPad Pros are $150 off. You'd be right to pause before taking the plunge... |
Bird tries to forcibly remove Boing Boing’s story detailing how to hack and keep its scooters Posted: 11 Jan 2019 02:06 PM PST Electric scooter company Bird has demanded that the publication Boing Boing take down a story that discusses a $30 way to hack Bird scooters, citing copyright infringement. The argument doesn't seem to hold up at first glance, but Bird has been known to act quickly and face legal consequences later. The article, published last month, describes a large number of Bird scooters dumped on city streets and follows that by saying "maybe now is a good time to invest in a $30 scooter 'conversion kit.'" The kits, which ship from China, are essentially a plug-and-play way to disable the Bird recovery and payment features to turn the scooter into your own personal one. The story mentions how you could also potentially acquire one of the Bird... |
Netflix sued by Choose Your Own Adventure publishers over Black Mirror: Bandersnatch Posted: 11 Jan 2019 11:45 AM PST The publisher of the Choose Your Own Adventure book series is suing Netflix over its interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch. Chooseco filed its lawsuit against Netflix today in a Vermont court, accusing Netflix of willfully infringing on the "Choose Your Own Adventure" trademark and claiming that the episode is so dark it will tarnish the books' reputation. The complaint, as published by Polygon, claims that Netflix started trying to license the Choose Your Own Adventure name starting in 2016. While the companies engaged in "extensive negotiations," Netflix allegedly didn't get the license. Chooseco says it's already sent cease-and-desist notices about its trademark "on at least one occasion" regarding a different TV show —... |
How did Replicas end up in theaters instead of on VOD? Posted: 11 Jan 2019 11:10 AM PST This weekend, a new science fiction thriller starring Keanu Reeves opens on more than 2,000 movie screens nationwide. This won't seem unusual to moviegoers old enough to remember the 1990s and the 2000s, when science fiction thrillers starring Keanu Reeves regularly showed up in wide release. But it will seem unusual to anyone who sees Replicas, and wonders how a D-grade picture scored both Reeves and a broad theatrical distribution deal, even in the cinematic dead zone of January. These days, plenty of D-grade pictures featuring big-name actors of the '90s and '00s are produced quickly and cheaply for the streaming market. Just ask Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, or John Cusack. With so many avenues of distribution, it can be tricky to... |

Google discontinues Chromecast Audio, but you can grab one for $15 while supplies last Posted: 11 Jan 2019 10:44 AM PST There's nothing quite like Google's Chromecast Audio — a tiny disc that lets you wirelessly sling music to practically any dumb speaker, even create multi-room audio configurations like a poor man's Sonos setup, just by plugging into its 3.5mm line-out and adding some power over Micro USB. And that's why it's such a shame Google is discontinuing the dongle today. The company provided The Verge (and Android Police, earlier) with this statement:
