Four top Audi employees indicted in Dieselgate scandal

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 05:46 PM PST

A federal grand jury in Detroit has indicted four former Audi managers for their alleged role in the German automaker's scheme to cheat US emissions testing on diesel-powered cars, according to a new court document published Thursday. Audi's malfeasance was part of a larger effort from parent company Volkswagen Group to sell millions of cars with engines that were dirtier than regulations allowed, a scandal that was uncovered in 2015 and has since been dubbed "Dieselgate."

Richard Bauder, Axel Eiser, Stefan Knirsch, and Carsten Nagel were charged with multiple counts of violating the Clean Air Act, committing wire fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. All of them ran different parts of Audi's engine development and...

Wacom and Magic Leap are creating an optimistic vision of the future of productivity

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 03:29 PM PST

You've most likely seen some iteration of the image above before, in overreaching tech concept videos preaching the possibilities of the collaborative workspace of the future. It's easy to brush off these imaginings because they're still just photoshopped images depicting what seemed like a distant reality. But after having tried Wacom and Magic Leap's prototype collaborative design tools, I can say that these renderings are a pretty accurate representation of what I experienced.

The Wacom and Magic Leap partnership was first announced at the inaugural L.E.A.P. developers' conference held last October, at which the two companies showed a prototype workflow experience that had been in development for two years. Wearing a Magic Leap One...

Digital license plates are now allowed in Michigan

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 03:05 PM PST

Digital license plates are now allowed in Michigan thanks to a new state law. It will join California and Arizona as one of the few states in the US that allow digital license plates, allowing drivers to register their cars electronically and eschew old-school metal plates.

To be clear, digital license plates consist of displays covered in glass that are mounted onto a frame. They come with their own computer chips and wireless communication systems. Some of the benefits of using digital licenses versus old metal ones are the ability to display Amber alerts or stolen vehicle messages when needed, but they could also make it easier to digitally renew license plates over the years. That comes at a price, though. Currently, they cost $499...

California dealers try to stop Volvo’s car subscription service

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 02:33 PM PST

The Volvo XC40, one of the cars available on Care by Volvo.

A trade group representing California car and truck dealerships has filed a petition with the state's New Motor Vehicle Board to stop Volvo from offering cars on a subscription model. The filing, first reported by Teslarati, is an escalation of the dealer group's effort to disrupt Volvo's subscription program, which became public late last year after it sent a letter to the CEO of the Swedish automaker's North American division.

The subscription service, dubbed "Care by Volvo," was announced in the second half of 2017. Customers "subscribe" to a car for two years, and make fixed monthly payments of around $750 (prices vary depending on the model). That price covers a bit more than a typical lease — insurance and maintenance are...

Netflix shares huge numbers for original content as Disney’s streaming service nears

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 02:12 PM PST

Netflix has released numbers for some of its films and series — a show of strength to investors ahead of upcoming streaming wars with Disney and AT&T.

Bird Box, which Netflix previously reported accrued more than 45 million unique account streams seven days after its release, has now surpassed 80 million views, according to CEO Reed Hastings' letter to investors. You, a Lifetime series that Netflix has purchased the rights to, will surpass 40 million household streams within the first four weeks of its release. The same goes for new Netflix original series, Sex Education. Hastings' letter states that Netflix accounts for 10 percent of all television viewing in the United States.

It's an impressive feat, and one that Hastings really...

Epic will hold off on releasing game-changing Fortnite updates before big tournaments

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 12:39 PM PST

It's been less than a year since Epic Games kicked off the competitive circuit for Fortnite, but the company says it's learned enough to make a substantial change to how it balances the consumer version of the game with the one played by pros at big tournaments. In an announcement on its website, the developer says it will now leave a window of time, somewhere between a few days and one week, for players to acclimate to a new update, one that could include game-changing new items, vehicles, weapons, or environmental changes to the map.

"We value the ability of players to adapt to the game changing over time. We also believe these changes keep Fortnite fresh for everyone including players, competitors and spectators. However, we want to...

No, Mastercard won’t stop digital subscriptions from annoyingly auto-renewing

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 12:22 PM PST

Ever sign up for a free trial, only to get slapped with a monthly fee when you forget to cancel in time? For a moment, it looked like Mastercard was ready to provide the ultimate solution — a new policy that would require merchants to explicitly ask you again, each and every month, before charging you a dime.

Unfortunately, Mastercard has now clarified that it's a way more limited solution than the company originally let on. The new policy only applies when you subscribe to physical products that get delivered to your door, like vitamins and snacks, not digital services like Netflix or PlayStation Plus.

(Nothing against PlayStation Plus, it's just the one I personally keep forgetting to cancel...

Walmart reportedly abandons new streaming service to focus on Vudu

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST

Walmart is shelving its streaming service ambitions and ditching plans to launch a competitor to Netflix and Hulu, anonymous sources told CNBC. The retailer had considered launching a service aimed at "Middle America," but it decided against it due to the large investment needed to make original content.

The streaming service's focus on middle America followed the initial success of the TV show Roseanne. But Walmart found investing in content to be a risky play, according to the report. The retailer would have been entering a heavily saturated market where big names like Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix could outspend it and make content more readily.

Instead of chasing a conservative streaming service, CNBC reports that Walmart will...

Denon DJ’s new four-channel standalone unit shows commitment to battling Pioneer DJ

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:44 AM PST

Denon DJ has announced a new four-channel standalone DJ unit called the Prime 4. It's the first standalone unit with the ability to play four decks of tracks using only two platters, which is something DJs have wanted for some time. This not only makes the Prime 4 unique, but it hammers home that Denon DJ is sniping at Pioneer DJ's stranglehold on the DJ tech market.

Pioneer DJ's equipment has long been the uncontested standard used by the industry. It's requested by most DJs, which means many clubs, audio rental companies, festivals, and more can justify buying the pricey Pioneer DJ gear. In 2017, Denon DJ introduced the Prime series with a CDJ that looked to reclaim a chunk of the pro market. Among its performance features, there was a...

A Twitter bug exposed some Android users’ protected tweets for years

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:44 AM PST

If you've used Twitter on your Android phone anytime since 2014, you might want to double-check your settings. Twitter disclosed on its Help Center page today that some Android users had their private tweets revealed for years due to a security flaw. The issue caused the Twitter for Android app to disable the "Protect your Tweets" setting for some Android users who made changes to their account settings, such as changing the email address associated with their account, between November 3rd, 2014 and January 14th, 2019.

Though the company says the issue was fixed earlier this week and that iOS or web users weren't affected, it doesn't yet know how many Android accounts were affected. Twitter says it's reached out to affected users and...
