Moog’s new analog synth is more than just a growling bass machine

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 04:37 PM PST

Iconic synth maker Moog is technically showing at this year's NAMM show, but in true Moog style, there's no actual booth. Instead, the North Carolina-based company opted to create an off-site pop-up called the Moog Island Of Electronicus where it debuted its newest offering: an analog synth called Sirin. (Fun fact — the original "Island Of Electronicus" was a trippy, immersive experience the company came up with in 1971, replete with plush bean bags to sit on, stained glass, and of course, synths to play with.)

The Moog Sirin feels like it borrows from many other Moog products, but with key tweaks. It's housed in a brushed stainless steel enclosure with a compact layout that harkens to the Minitaur synth, and it leans into a retro design...

VW just shut down part of its electric car charging network over a safety concern

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 04:36 PM PST

Volkswagen's dieselgate scandal may wind up birthing one of the largest electric car charging networks in the United States, but that plan just hit at least a slight bump — a "potential safety issue" that's forcing VW-owned Electrify America to shut down most of its high-powered charging cables for now.

In a press release, the company doesn't specify what the safety issue might actually be, only that it affects chargers between 150 and 350 kilowatts that are using liquid-cooled cables by Huber+Suhner, that it's taking this action "out of an abundance of caution," and that there's a list of around 80 charging stations that will remain open.

"The safety of our customers is our highest priority," reads the statement from Electrify...

Austin teen arrested for robbing a bank after using a Jump scooter as his getaway vehicle

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 04:29 PM PST

The first rule of robbing a bank in 2019 is apparently not to use your credit card to rent the getaway car. According to Austin, Texas newspaper the Austin American-Statesman, 19-year-old Luca Mangiarano was charged yesterday with robbery by threat after showing up to a BBVA Compass bank on Austin's Sixth Street and demanding money via a note handed to a teller. He was caught, however, because he allegedly used an Uber-owned Jump electric scooter as his means of escape after leaving with the cash.

The Statesman reports that Austin police contacted Uber about the robbery, and the company handed over Mangiarano's name, address, and credit card number in relation to his renting of a Jump scooter seen in video footage, a scooter the police...

Everything coming to Netflix in February

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 03:00 PM PST

The Umbrella Academy.

Valentine's Day is on the way, so to celebrate, let's kick off with… Netflix's first dating show? Not kidding. In February, the streaming service is launching Dating Around, a reality show about singles going on awkward first dates. It sounds super cringey, but I'll likely hate-watch it anyway, like I hate-watched the thriller TV series You, which bombed cable ratings before making it to Netflix in December 2018.

Netflix is also celebrating Black History Month with titles including ReMastered: The Two Killings of Sam Cooke, a long-form documentary about the mysterious death of an influential black musician during the civil rights movement. And there's Kevin Hart's Guide to Black History, which highlights the lives of lesser-known black...

This mouth-controlled synthesizer is the wildest instrument I’ve ever heard

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 02:31 PM PST

I came to the NAMM show for the music, and boy, did I ever get it. Outside the Anaheim Convention Center where NAMM is taking place, a genial gent calling himself Lordblobbie and wearing heart-shaped sunglasses is playing a thrillingly unique instrument called the Soma Pipe. The Pipe works with a contact microphone to let its user generate a bewildering array of sounds just with his mouth, breath, and a few modulation dials. I'm not kidding. In the video above, Lordblobbie goes through the full range from laser beams and bird chirps to beatboxing, drums, and whale noises. It's. A. Trip.

The Pipe is the brainchild of a Russian inventor called Vlad Kreimer. It has 12 different preset modulation algorithms, including ones named Orpheus,...

Native Instruments’ new keyboard controller is affordable and backpack-ready

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 02:27 PM PST

As usual, hardware and software company Native Instruments has announced a slew of new products for this year's NAMM show. Last year, the Berlin-based company focused on launching sample platform sounds.com and showing off pricier flagship products, but this year Native Instruments put shifted the spotlight to affordable versions of its tech. That includes, among other things, the new Komplete Kontrol M32 keyboard controller.

The Komplete Kontrol M32 carries many of the same visual hallmarks found in its more expensive counterparts in the A and S series, like the multi-functional push encoder and a small navigation screen, but it does strip a couple elements away. Instead of wheels for pitch and modulation, for example, there are touch...

Tesla fined $29,365 for safety hazards in Model 3 production tent

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 02:18 PM PST

Tesla has been fined $29,365 for violating California labor laws in the parking lot tent where Model 3s are assembled. California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal-OSHA) recorded six violations between June 2018 (when the tent was erected) and December 2018, according to Business Insider.

Tesla failed to obtain a permit before building the tent, and failed to inspect it for potential safety hazards, according to Cal-OSHA. The company also failed to cover a hole in the floor that measured 22 inches wide, 14 inches long, and eight inches deep. Tesla also did not properly train employees on evacuation procedures in the tent, or on how to prevent and respond to heat illness. Lastly, the tent featured exposed metal rods and...

Apple News subscription service preview found in iOS 12.2 beta

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 01:54 PM PST

A preview of an Apple News subscription service was found in a developer build of iOS 12.2 by 9to5Mac today, and the service would offer access to newspapers and magazines for a monthly fee. The images line up with The New York Times report from last October that reported Apple is close to launching its own subscription service inside the News app, and it builds on Apple's acquisition of a digital magazine subscription service called Texture, which was billed as the "Netflix of magazines," earlier last year.

The splash page shows that the subscription service might be called "Apple News Magazines," and payment will be handled through the iTunes store. There's no pricing information or any sort of expected launch date yet, but for...

Cadillac is resurrecting its subscription service

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 01:49 PM PST

Cadillac is bringing back the fledgling car subscription service that it put on hold in November of last year, executives told Automotive News earlier this week. This time around, though, Cadillac dealers will be way more involved in the process than they were before.

It's not yet clear how much the new version of the subscription service (dubbed "Book 2.0") will resemble the original ("Book by Cadillac"). In the original version, customers payed an upfront fee of $500, and then a $1,800 monthly fee that included insurance, maintenance, and more.

One big difference, though, is that Cadillac dealers will be handling far more of the day-to-day interactions with customers. Previously, Cadillac owned the vehicles in the subscription fleet,...

The LG G8 ThinQ may swap out an earpiece for another camera, leaks suggest

Posted: 25 Jan 2019 01:01 PM PST

LG G8 ThinQ renders are popping up in multiple places on the internet, complete with a splashy indigo wallpaper. It looks similar to the G7 but with one significant difference: the earpiece is missing.

Like the G7, there's a notch, a headphone jack, and a slight chin at the bottom. Unlike the G7, the G8 appears to have horizontally aligned dual rear cameras rather than vertically aligned ones. Instead of the earpiece, LG's G8 uses the extra space for another selfie camera (rather than, say, doing away with the notch).

Image: @OnLeaks and @91Mobiles

Overall, the G8, according to these renders, is missing a lot of the innovative features we're seeing in other flagship phones: in-display fingerprint readers,...
