Mophie’s new USB-C PD battery packs are an expensive way to get faster charging

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:06 PM PST

Mophie released a pair of new battery packs today, and the company is finally embracing the USB-C PD specification for fast charging. The new PD pack comes in two sizes: the $59.95 Powerstation PD, which offers 6,700mAh of charge, and the larger $79.95 Powerstation PD XL, which has 10,050mAh of battery capacity.

Cleverly, Mophie is taking advantage of the dual nature of USB-C, and each pack only offers two ports: a single USB-C port, which can be used to charge devices plugged into the Powerstation PD (at up to 18W) as well as recharge the pack from a wall brick (at up to 15W). There's also a legacy USB Type-A port, which can power devices at up to 12W.

The two chargers look nice enough, but as is almost always the case...

Luxury loot box sponsorships are tearing YouTube apart

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:41 PM PST

Some of YouTube's biggest channels are facing backlash from both viewers and other YouTube creators after promoting a form of loot box-style gambling with a company called Mystery Brand. Both Jake Paul and Brian "RiceGum" Le have run sponsored videos promoting Mystery Brand — a $100,000 offer that other YouTube creators said they've also received and turned down.

The sponsored videos show Paul and Le clicking on a variety of mystery boxes looking to win top prizes. Much like loot boxes in gaming, the format lets players spend anywhere from $12.99 to $100 on boxes and open them up to win an unidentified prize. Prizes differ from USB cords and fidget spinners to designer clothes, cars, and houses, according to the site.

The Moon has a far side, not a dark one

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:28 PM PST

China now has two history-making robots sending back images from an area of the Moon where humankind has never been before. This side of the Moon is distant and mysterious, but, despite pop culture references to the contrary, it isn't always dark. In fact, after touching down on the lunar surface, the probe sent back a snapshot of its new home that shows a rocky, cratered, and distinctly lit landscape.

China's probe — which includes a lander and a rover — landed at 10:26AM Thursday, Beijing time, as part of China's Chang'e-4 mission to scout out the side of the Moon we can't see from Earth. Since it takes the Moon roughly the same amount of time to spin around its axis as it does to orbit the Earth, we only see one half of the Moon: its...

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai and Commissioner Brendan Carr are canceling their appearances at CES this year as a consequence of the ongoing partial government shutdown, according to Politico Pro.

Pai's planned session with moderator Gary Shapiro, from the Consumer Technology Association, would have focused on "the exciting opportunities the FCC faces as the agency navigates the rapidly changing technological landscape."

Carr was expected to attend a roundtable session with Federal Trade Commission Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter to discuss regulatory and policy issues involving 5G, privacy and accessibly, along with other topics.

Both events have been removed from the CES schedule, but organizers have yet to...

Logan Paul and KSI look to stop pirates of boxing rematch

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:28 PM PST

YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul are working to protect their upcoming boxing rematch against pirated live streams after their initial fight was pirated by more than a million viewers. In a video published yesterday, KSI says that in addition to sorting out distribution options and a location for the match, they're also "working on protection and the legal side of things when it comes to streaming."

The first match took place last August in the UK's Manchester Arena. Despite the thousands of people who bought tickets for the in-person event and the hundreds of thousands more who streamed it live on YouTube via a $10 pay-per-view, piracy was rampant on Twitch. Piracy streams do violate Twitch's guidelines, though these are subject to DMCA...

Charter’s new Spectrum app for Apple TV users doesn’t require logins

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:25 PM PST

An official Spectrum TV app has been released for Apple TV customers after delays pushed back Charter's planned 2018 launch for the app into the new year. The free app is straightforward, allowing subscribers to watch Spectrum programming — both live channels and on-demand content — when an Apple TV is connected to Spectrum home internet service without requiring the customer to sign in with their account details.

To use the new Spectrum TV app, you'll need an active Spectrum TV / internet subscription and a fourth-generation Apple TV (or the Apple TV 4K).

The Spectrum app isn't going to radically change your Apple TV experience, but if you're already paying for Spectrum, it doesn't hurt to know there's another way to access the...

Asus’ first Chrome OS tablet is for classroom use

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:22 PM PST

Asus made a tablet that runs on Chrome OS for the first time, and it's made with students in mind. The Chromebook Tablet CT100 has a 9.7-inch touchscreen and is supposed to be protected against drops by its rubberized chassis and tempered glass display.

Chrome OS is relatively new to tablets, and it has mainly been put to use in classrooms where it's dominated US sales in recent years. The latest Asus tablet gives schools another option for devices.

Asus' Chromebook Tablet is powered by a hexa-core OP1 processor and it comes with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It has a USB-C port, and Asus claims the tablet has "a full school day" of battery life — so, presumably, seven hours on a single charge.

GM will be the second automaker to lose the EV tax credit, while Bolt sales stumble

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:17 PM PST

General Motors confirmed on Thursday that it sold its 200,000th plug-in vehicle in the US during the fourth quarter of 2018, which has triggered a slow phaseout of the $7,500 federal tax credit over the next 15 months. GM is the second automaker to pass this mark; Tesla reached 200,000 vehicles sold in the US last summer.

Customers of GM cars that are eligible for the credit (like the Chevy Bolt or the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid) will only be able to receive a maximum of $3,750 starting on April 1st. The maximum available credit will halve again on October 1st to $1,875, and it will completely phase out six months later in April 2020.

The EV tax credit was created by the Obama administration in 2009 to encourage automakers to embrace...
