Twitch re-bans streamer charged with assault after briefly letting him come back Posted: 04 Jan 2019 03:06 PM PST Today, the Australian Fortnite streamer MrDeadMoth — otherwise known as Luke Munday, 26 — was banned again from Twitch for an indeterminate period of time, after an outcry from the gaming community. Just under a month ago, on the evening of December 9th, Munday was streaming to thousands of viewers of when he could be heard allegedly assaulting his partner. "How many times do I have to tell you?" he asked her, audio of the incident showed. His children's cries can be heard in the background. Munday was then charged with assault and banned from Twitch. But on December 30th, he posted a tweet advertising a new stream. As Dexerto reports, "[u]sers in his chat who referenced the December 9 incident were banned or timed out from chatting."... |
Pandora beats Spotify to offline playback on the Apple Watch Posted: 04 Jan 2019 02:58 PM PST Pandora's latest version of its iOS app includes a "brand new, built-from-the-ground-up app that's seamlessly integrated into the Apple Watch experience." From your wrist, you'll be able to control playback or give a thumbs up to whatever song is currently playing on Pandora. But even better is that Pandora's Apple Watch app includes offline playback, so you can leave your phone at home and listen to a playlist while on a run. Only Pandora's paying customers are getting this feature, so you'll need to have a subscription to either Pandora Plus or Pandora Premium — the company's full-on Spotify / Apple Music competitor — to listen to music on your Apple Watch. Spotify's Apple Watch app doesn't yet offer offline listening capabilities.... |
The all-electric Polestar 2 will be the first car with Google’s native Android Auto Posted: 04 Jan 2019 02:29 PM PST Volvo's futuristic performance brand Polestar released the first teaser image of its second car this week (seen above). The aptly named Polestar 2 will be Volvo's first all-electric car, and has specs (on paper, at least) that match up with some of the best EVs that are about to hit the road. It will also be the first car to run Google's native version of Android Auto — something the tech conglomerate has spent the last few years working on. We first heard about the idea of native Android Auto back in 2014, when Reuters reported that Google wanted to develop a version of the in-car operating system that wouldn't require the use of a smartphone. Google eventually announced at its 2017 I/O developer conference that it was working with... |

Tesla allows people in Europe and China to start configuring Model 3s Posted: 04 Jan 2019 11:25 AM PST Tesla started taking reservations for the Model 3 in Europe and China at the end of 2018, which meant that interested buyers were able play around with the company's online configurator after plunking down a $1,000 deposit. But now anyone in those markets can tinker with the company's "design studio," as Tesla announced on Friday that it's opened up access to everyone in China and select left-hand-drive countries in Europe (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, and Luxembourg). Only two versions of the Model 3 are available to configure right now: the long range all-wheel drive Model 3, and its snappier counterpart, the Model 3 Performance. The "medium... |
An economist explains what digital technology means for the future of popular culture Posted: 04 Jan 2019 10:38 AM PST In the early days of file-sharing and the internet, experts worried that technology would gut the creative industries, leaving consumers with fewer (and lower-quality) choices than ever before. It's clear now that this hasn't been the case, says Joel Waldfogel, an economist at the University of Minnesota. Pirating remains a problem, and traditional gatekeepers aren't as powerful as they once were. But revenue for recorded music is growing, and there are more books, movies, television, and music than ever before. In his new book Digital Renaissance: What Data and Economics Tell Us about the Future of Popular Culture (Princeton University Press), Waldfogel argues that digital technologies haven't killed creative industries, but they have... |
Posted: 04 Jan 2019 10:04 AM PST An unknown person leaked German politicians' credit card details, private communications, and other data last month — along with data from rappers and other media figures. The leak includes information from the office of Chancellor Angela Merkel and reportedly from people across all political parties in Germany's parliament, except the far-right party Alternative for Germany. German news outlet RBB first reported the news this morning. According to The Associated Press, a jumble of files was linked on a now-suspended Twitter account, which had around 17,000 followers. German cybersecurity agency head Arne Schönbohm said that the leak included details from around 1,000 people, and that one political party in parliament was not affected,... |

The Weather Channel app unlawfully obtained user location data, says prosecutor Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:00 AM PST The Weather Channel app misled millions of users into allowing it to access their personal location data, profiting off of the data for commercial purposes, the city attorney of Los Angeles alleged in a lawsuit filed on Thursday. The Weather Channel app is one of the most popular weather services in the United States, and it's rated number one in the iOS App Store in the weather category as of Friday morning. The app has been downloaded over 100 million times across operating systems and the Weather Company, the IBM-owned business, bolsters 45 million active monthly users. In the lawsuit, the government claims that the Weather Company deceived users into turning on their location tracking, saying it would only be used to receive more... |
