Watch Intel’s CES 2019 press conference in 9 minutes

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 07:19 PM PST

Intel faces a fight for its future, as we reported in June. That's when company CEO Brian Krzanich resigned, and that's when it became crystal-clear just how much work it would take for the processor giant to claw its way back to everyday relevance — particularly considering that even its core processor business had been struggling to turn out batches of continually smaller, more efficient CPUs, after delaying its 10nm parts several times in a row.

Here at CES is Las Vegas, the company didn't have an awful lot to announce that'd excite everyday folks, but if you're watching Intel because you're interested in the company's chances of turning it all around, you might want to check out our 9-minute video highlighting the main things Intel...

Motiv’s fitness ring is turning into a biometric security device

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 07:00 PM PST

Motiv is adding heart rate-sensing security features to its smart ring that will enable it to make payments later in the year, the company announced today at CES. The ring has always measured your heart rate for the purposes of tracking your exercise and activity, but now the company wants to measure the heart accurately enough to read it like a fingerprint and verify your identity. Once your identity is verified, the ring can communicate with point-of-sale terminals to authorize payments. Motiv intends to add the new functionality via a software update in the second half of 2019.

The device works based on the theory that everyone's heart gives off unique signals in their heart rates. Motiv intends to use electrocardiography (EKG) to...

Anker’s newest Soundcore Rave speakers promise to power your outdoor parties

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 07:00 PM PST

Anker's Soundcore brand, which specializes in portable Bluetooth speakers and more recently in home theater products, is announcing a few new devices at CES this year. The first is a new line of portable speakers called the Rave series, which look to be incredibly loud, waterproof and water-resistant models designed for outdoor parties.

The standard Rave is a 160W speaker, with dual two-inch tweeters, two 5.25 woofers, and 24 hours of battery life. It is, however, only IPX4 splash resistant, so you can't exactly dunk it in a pool and have it come out unscathed. Still, for a speaker that powerful, and with a price point of just under $200, that sounds like a pretty solid deal.

Anker’s ultrafast Atom PD 1 charger starts shipping this month for $29.99

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 07:00 PM PST

Anker, once known as a leading accessory maker and now a multi-faceted consumer electronics company, hasn't abandoned its roots as a supplier of some of the fastest and highest-quality chargers around. The company's newest line of ultrafast chargers, the PowerPort Atom series, is set to start shipping its first device later this month, the company announced today during CES. The Atom PD 1, as it's called, was originally announced back in October, but the product was ultimately delayed a few months. The company now says it should be available for the same price of $29.99 later in January, though a concrete ship date has not yet been set.

What makes this charger special is its speed and efficiency. Gallium nitride, or GaN, is fast...

Meural’s making a smaller digital art display

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 06:30 PM PST

Meural is still going strong in the digital art space following its acquisition by Netgear last year. The company's introducing its third-generation art display today, called the Meural Generation 3.0 Canvas, which will be available in two different sizes for the first time. There will be the usual 27-inch unit and a smaller, cheaper 21.5-inch version. Meural won't share pricing details around the smaller version, but we can assume it'll cost less than $595, which is how much the current 27-inch display costs. Both displays have a 1080p resolution. As usual, users can choose from a range of artwork to display on their wall. Pricing and availability details will be released later this year.

The Canvas also features modular frames, so...

Xtrainerz are the bone-conducting headphones water sport fans have waited for

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 06:00 PM PST

The new waterproof Xtrainerz from AfterShokz.

AfterShokz finally has a pair of waterproof bone-conducting headphones. The new Xtrainerz (pronounced "cross trainers") target water sport fans who want to listen to music, but still leave the ears open to the sounds around them. Be it the threatening buzz of a motorboat cutting through the water, or idle banter in the lineup as your mates await the next wave.

As we've said before, bone-conducting headphones simply can't compete with traditional in-ear headphones on sound quality, typically delivering weaker bass and a quieter overall volume level. On the other hand, they leave your eardrums open to surrounding noises because they deliver sound vibrations to the inner ear through your cheekbones. The result is increased environmental...

Intel demos first Lakefield chip design using its 3D stacking architecture

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 05:42 PM PST

Intel is making progress on developing its next-generation 10-nanometer processors, and today during its CES press conference, the chipmaker showed off the first completed designs for what the company is calling Lakefield. Based on the Foveros 3D design that was first outlined last month, Lakefield is effectively a stacked processor, similar to how chipmakers can now stack memory, that lets Intel break out different PC components into separate "chiplets" that rest on top of one another to create a full system-on-a-chip.

The benefits of stacking are that you can make something small — in this case, an entire computer board that's no bigger than five quarters laid end to end.

Because of its tiny form factor, the board...

Intel’s Project Athena pushes PC makers to create ‘advanced laptops’ with 5G and AI

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 05:29 PM PST

Intel is creating a new way to push PC makers to get ready for "a new class of advanced laptops." Dubbed "Project Athena," Intel's push involves 5G and artificial intelligence support wrapped up in what looks like Ultrabooks part two. Intel is creating annual specs that manufacturers will need to adhere to for a certification process.

It all sounds very similar to the set of specifications the industry followed to create Ultrabooks, a marketing label desirable enough that it pushed some laptop makers to adopt thinner designs, faster storage, and longer battery life more quickly.

While Ultrabooks pushed laptop makers to focus on thin and light machines, Intel's focus with Project Athena is vague. "Designed to enable new experiences and...

Sony’s best 2019 party speaker has cup holders for your beer

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 05:15 PM PST

Having already mastered the development of big, Bluetooth party speakers with flashing lights and gesture-activated sound effects, Sony has taken on a new challenge for what's probably its weirdest gadget at CES 2019: it's trying to build the ultimate tailgating speaker; the ultimate barbecue speaker; the ultimate outdoor speaker. This is the GTK-PG10, and if we are to properly recognize its greatness, step one is ignoring that product "name."

This $250 speaker has a dedicated outdoor party mode. What does it do? How does it change the music EQ? Sony says that the DSP (digital signal processor) "automatically adapts audio settings to optimize outdoor performance." Its rechargeable battery is good for up to 13 hours of playback.
