The starting price of a Tesla Model S will soon be $18,000 higher Posted: 09 Jan 2019 07:08 PM PST Tesla is abandoning the 75kWh battery pack for both the Model X and Model S, CEO Elon Musk announced on Wednesday. Customers have until Sunday, January 13th to place orders if they want cars fitted with the company's lowest-capacity (and cheapest) battery. The 75kWh pack is what Tesla uses in the base model of both those cars, which means they will now only be available with the higher-capacity 100kWh pack. That also means the price to buy either car is about to increase dramatically. Unless new variants are in the works, or Tesla changes its prices — something it does often, to be fair — the base price of the Model S is about to increase from $76,000 to $94,000, while the cost of the cheapest Model X is about to jump from $82,000 to... |
Big Cable’s ‘10G’ campaign betrays a fear of wireless 5G Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:25 PM PST 5G networks are poised to be a big thing, with promises of big speed boosts that some think may even one day be able to compete with traditional broadband (just ask D-Link, which announced a 5G home router at CES 2019). And apparently, the idea of that kind of competition has traditional cable companies a bit spooked, considering that this week at CES, the NCTA and other cable groups announced their new "10G" initiative, which must be better than 5G: after all, 10 is a whole twice as much as 5! Now, before we begin analyzing this absurdity, a note on terminology: 5G, as a name, refers to the 5th-generation of cellular connectivity tech (to recap: 1G was analog cellular tech, 2G was digital with GPRS and EDGE data, 3G was faster data, and... |
These slick new AR glasses project shockingly high-quality visuals Posted: 09 Jan 2019 04:53 PM PST Like virtual reality before it, augmented reality is the newest, hyped-up technology ripped straight from science fiction that technology companies worldwide are trying to bring to life. But unlike most fledgling companies in the burgeoning AR space that are still dealing in half-finished prototypes and experimental proof-of-concepts, Chinese startup Nreal has arrived on the scene this week with a surprisingly capable pair of AR glasses scheduled to hit the market later this year. I got to try an early version of the company's product and came away impressed with what I saw. There are two selling points to Nreal's glasses. The first is that they don't look awful and you might actually feel comfortable wearing them in public, or at the... |
1TB SD cards are finally a thing you can buy Posted: 09 Jan 2019 04:10 PM PST The first flash memory products under the Lexar brand following its acquisition and revival are here, and what better way to kick things off than by setting a massive SD storage milestone? That's right, you can now buy what appears to be the first legitimate, commercially available 1-terabyte SD card. SanDisk showed off a 1TB SD prototype a couple of years ago, but the final product never made it to market. Lexar's Professional 633x line of SDHC and SDXC UHS-I cards, however, is now listed for sale in capacities from 16GB all the way up to the flagship 1TB. That card claims read speeds of up to 95MB/s and write speeds of 70MB/s, though it's only rated as V30/U3, which guarantees sustained write performance of 30MB/s. As ever, there's a... |
iOttie’s new motorized car mount will clutch your phone in its robotic embrace Posted: 09 Jan 2019 03:54 PM PST iOttie's car mounts for phones are considered by many (including the ever-reliable Wirecutter) to be some of the best around, but you know what would make them even better? Mechanized robotic arms that reach out and grab your phone for you, securely holding your phone within their cold metal embrace while you drive. Or at least, that's the theory behind the company's latest Auto Sense Wireless Fast Charging Car Mount, announced this year at CES 2019. In fairness, "mechanized robotic arms" is probably overselling things just a bit: in reality, it's basically just a servo motor that moves the arms out and then clamps them in. But iOttie has done some pretty serious engineering here for the setup: there's a proximity sensor... |
Why so many of us wanted to believe in an ocean cleanup system that just broke Posted: 09 Jan 2019 03:32 PM PST 'It moves the proposed solution to 'out there,' where the trash is, rather than into our own lives, where the trash is being generated.' |
AT&T wireless CEO on fake 5G complaints: ‘that makes me smile’ Posted: 09 Jan 2019 03:30 PM PST The leader of AT&T's wireless division indicated that the carrier won't back down from its misleading 5G advertising, saying he's happy to be causing consternation for his competitors. "If I now occupy beachfront real estate in our competitors' heads, that makes me smile," AT&T Communications CEO John Donovan said during an appearance on stage at CES today. Donovan was responding to criticism from Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint over AT&T's decision to update some of its phones to display an icon that reads "5G E" instead of "LTE" when connected to faster pockets of its 4G LTE network. The icon refers to "5G Evolution," which is how AT&T is branding those portions of its 4G network — despite there being no actual 5G technology involved.... |
Oscars will reportedly forgo host for the first time in 30 years Posted: 09 Jan 2019 02:53 PM PST The Academy Awards will forgo a proper host for the first time in three decades, according to a new report from Variety. Sources told Variety, "Producers will select a crop of A-listers to introduce various segments instead of relying on one marquee name to kick things off in a monologue filled with Trump zingers." The show is also expected to "play up a high-profile year for music in film, thanks to likely nominees Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, and Kendrick Lamar," according to Variety. It's a huge departure from traditional Oscar telecasts, which rely on one or two hosts to open the show and emcee the evening. Comedian Kevin Hart was originally named as Oscars host last year, but he stepped down after a series of past homophobic tweets... |
Ousted Pixar CCO John Lasseter to head new animation division Posted: 09 Jan 2019 02:45 PM PST Production company Skydance Media announced today that it is hiring John Lasseter, the former chief creative officer of Pixar Animation and Walt Disney Animation Studios, to head Skydance's nascent animation division. Lasseter, who worked his way up from an animator job at Pixar to a powerful position overseeing Disney's animation strategy and storytelling, was first placed on a leave of absence from Disney in November 2017, then was pushed out of the company in June 2018, following a wave of complaints about sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and groping female employees at Disney's companies. Skydance CEO David Ellison issued a memo to staff about the hiring, saying, "Let me be clear: we have not entered into this decision... |
Essential tech products that you can save a lot of money on Posted: 09 Jan 2019 02:08 PM PST Being engrossed in the world of tech can prove to be an expensive pastime, but it doesn't have to be. Sure, some enthusiast products will always be a little pricey, but a few must-have gadgets are super easy to find discounted — so much so that you should think twice before paying full price for them. We've all be there before: getting price-gouged for a set of throwaway earbuds at the supermarket, or paying extra because you waited until the last minute to buy all of the tech you need to stay occupied on a long flight. That sort of thing just happens sometimes, if not to you, then to someone close to you. The items below consist of a mix of cheaper alternatives to more expensive products and products that are commonly available for less... |
