Our best look yet at the LG G8 ThinQ Posted: 12 Feb 2019 05:27 PM PST When LG reveals its new high-end G8 ThinQ smartphone, the design probably won't be a surprise — because noted phone leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) has just revealed clear images that show the handset from practically every angle, weeks ahead of its likely debut at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month.
That's on top of some near-identical images at XDA-developers last month. While LG hasn't confirmed that this is what the phone will look like, nor provided many details, the company has technically already announced this phone — last week, LG confirmed that it would sell a handset called the LG G8 ThinQ, complete with a time-of-flight 3D depth... |
This new map reveals how climate change could hit your hometown Posted: 12 Feb 2019 04:34 PM PST A new interactive map lets you peer 60 years into the future of cities in North America — and no matter where you look, the outlook is worrying. Temperatures climb, precipitation shifts, and the Charlotte, North Carolina of the future winds up feeling more like the Tallahassee, Florida of today. The map, released today along with a study in the journal Nature Communications, forecasts the future climates for 540 cities in North America — connecting them to climates that we know. So instead of just saying that San Francisco, for example, will be 6.9℉ warmer and 40 percent drier than it is today, the map draws a line to the closest climate analogy, which, in this case, is a city in LA County. |
T-Mobile’s merger pitch to Congress is about China beating America on 5G Posted: 12 Feb 2019 03:36 PM PST The CEO of T-Mobile and executive chairman of Sprint are set to be heard in front of House lawmakers tomorrow about their proposed merger, but newly released testimony is already giving a glimpse into how the companies will make their case. In one word: China. In prepared remarks, T-Mobile CEO John Legere ties the proposed merger to "American innovation and national security," and specifically argues that the merger will be necessary to make the United States a leader on next-generation 5G network technology. "The stakes are high — nothing less than preserving our edge in innovation and maintaining our security," he plans to say. The CEO plans to say that the US is "falling behind" China on 5G, which he says "has taken a global lead in... |
Wrestler Booker T is suing Activision for allegedly putting his alter ego in Black Ops 4 Posted: 12 Feb 2019 03:31 PM PST Professional wrestler Booker T. Huffman is suing games publisher Activision for allegedly putting his comic book character "G.I. Bro" in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Huffman filed a copyright complaint today based on similarities between G.I. Bro and the Black Ops character David "Prophet" Wilkes. "They could have drawn him any way they wanted. But they chose to steal Booker T's 'G. I. Bro,'" the complaint reads. Huffman's lawsuit seems based essentially on visual similarities between G.I. Bro and Prophet. (That's G.I. Bro as depicted in Huffman's comic book G.I. Bro and the Dragon of Death, as opposed to his 1990s "G.I. Bro" wrestling persona, and Prophet as depicted in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, as opposed to an older version of the... |
Vizio is telling you how to get paid for TV-spying lawsuit by taking over your TV Posted: 12 Feb 2019 03:00 PM PST If you turn on your Vizio TV right now, you may see a strange message telling you that "you could get money" from a class-action settlement. That's because Vizio has settled a $17 million lawsuit for allegedly spying on what you've been watching — and it's telling you how to get your money by controlling your TV, because that isn't ironic or creepy in the least. It's a feature that's been spotted in development last September, so we knew it was coming.
Customers — and the Federal Trade Commission — have accused Vizio of tracking data for years,... |
Activision Blizzard cuts nearly 800 jobs amid ‘record results in 2018’ Posted: 12 Feb 2019 02:31 PM PST Activision Blizzard has announced that it's laying off 8 percent of its employees — roughly 770 people — as part of the company "de-prioritizing initiatives that are not meeting expectations." The news came on the heels of announcement of Activision Blizzard's Q4 and 2018 earnings, where CEO Bobby Kotick gave the company's "record results in 2018." Kotick went on to comment that, "While our financial results for 2018 were the best in our history, we didn't realize our full potential." As such, Activision Blizzard says that it'll be focusing more on its biggest franchises: Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Overwatch, Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Diablo, with plans to increase developers across those titles by "approximately 20% over the course of... |
Developers say Sony is ‘playing favorites’ with PS4 cross-play support Posted: 12 Feb 2019 02:23 PM PST After months of dragging its feet, Sony finally started enabling cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and other consoles like the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One late last year with Fortnite, followed by Rocket League in January. But those two games remain the only titles with cross-console play, and some developers are calling out Sony for "playing favorites" with which games it is and isn't allowing to have the feature, via Kotaku. For its part, Sony's Shawn Layden claimed in an interview with Game Informer this week that the company is "open for business" when it comes to cross-console multiplayer, adding that "All it takes is for publishers and developers who wish to permission it," and that interested developers should work with their... |
Google’s Android Things is not much of a thing anymore Posted: 12 Feb 2019 02:12 PM PST Google may not be throwing in the towel on Android Things, but it's at least neatly folding the towel and setting it on the ground. In a blog post today, Google said that it's refocusing Android Things — its Android-based platform for smart devices — exclusively on smart speakers and smart displays. That's a much narrower scope than the all-encompassing Internet of Things platform that Google had initially dreamed up. When Android Things was first announced in December 2016, Google envisioned it as an operating system that would let developers code for a whole world of smart devices using the tools they already knew from coding for Android phones. At the time, that included speakers and displays, but also more experimental gadgets, like... |
Epic claims it’s not really copying rapper 2 Milly’s dance in Fortnite Posted: 12 Feb 2019 01:52 PM PST Epic Games urged a judge to dismiss a lawsuit by rapper Terrence "2 Milly" Ferguson, who accused Epic of copying his "Milly Rock" dance moves in a Fortnite player emote. Epic responded to Ferguson's complaint with a long list of legal defenses — including the claim that its dance emote, known as "Swipe It," isn't even using the same moves. In its defense, Epic's lawyers wrote that Ferguson's dance — as seen in the music video below — was too simple to be protected by copyright. "No one can own a dance step," the motion reads, because "individual dance steps and simple dance routines are not protected by copyright, but rather are building blocks of free expression." It also argued that the context is vitally different: while Ferguson used... |
Apple is reportedly planning a March 25th event to launch its subscription news service Posted: 12 Feb 2019 01:38 PM PST Apple is reportedly planning an event on March 25th to launch its upcoming paid Apple News subscription service, according to a report from BuzzFeed. The event will reportedly focus on Apple's service business, so it's unlikely that we'll see any new hardware, like the rumored iPad mini, AirPods, or long-anticipated AirPower charger. But the timing and theme of the event could give us an early look at its upcoming TV service, which is rumored to launch this spring. For the past few years, Apple has held a March event focused on its iPads, so it would be strange not to have some hardware announcements at the event — especially considering that an updated version of the company's entry-level $329 iPad... |
