Essential is resurrecting the once-dead Newton Mail app

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:06 PM PST

Essential is bringing back Newton Mail, the defunct email app that it acquired last December following Newton's shutdown in September due to an inability to compete with better funded and more popular competitors like Google and Microsoft, via Android Police.

As it was before the shutdown, Newton Mail is once again available for Newton Mail iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows devices, making it one of the only truly cross-platform dedicated email apps around. Essential's is keeping the price the same too: $49.99 per year (with a 14 day free trial to see if you'd actually like to pay for it.) And despite the fact that Essential now owns the company, there don't seem to be any special discounts for customers that own Essential Phones.

Programmer finds ridiculous ATM loophole that let him withdraw $1 million in cash

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:26 PM PST

It sounds like something straight out of a movie: an unsatisfied bank programmer discovers the perfect scheme for making an ATM spit out free money.

But apparently, this story is true: The South China Morning Post and China's Daily Economic News report that 43-year-old Qin Qisheng managed to withdraw over 7 million yuan (upwards of $1 million USD) from ATMs operated by his employer, Huaxia Bank — all by exploiting a crazy loophole.

According to the reports, the bank's system didn't properly record withdrawals made around midnight — effectively spitting out cash without removing the total from a user's account. Normally, that might send up a red flag that a transaction had failed, but Qisheng allegedly inserted scripts into the system...

Oculus’ next-gen Rift headset could be called the Rift S and feature onboard cameras

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 04:30 PM PST

Oculus VR's next-generation Rift headset may be called the "Rift S," according to Upload VR, which says it's found new filenames in Oculus' PC application that support the naming scheme. Additionally, Upload VR reports that setting options in a new version of the user interface code suggest that the device will have cameras built-in, which would mean users don't need to use external cameras for tracking, as is the case with the current Rift.

This all supports a TechCrunch report from November of last year that first surfaced the Rift S name and the idea that the next Rift will have what's known as inside-out tracking. That means it may have a system of cameras and sensors that let the VR headset position itself and your body in 3D...

Disney will let 21st Century Fox keep making R-rated movies like Deadpool

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:59 PM PST

Even after Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox is complete, Disney doesn't plan to shut down the studio's production of R-rated movies like Deadpool, Disney CEO Bob Iger said today. Disney has long been opposed to releasing R-rated films, or doing anything that could tarnish its family-friendly image, so approving the edgier superhero films, which have found success with fans and at the box office, is a major change of pace.

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 were box-office and critical successes for 21st Century Fox, which Disney has been working to acquire since late 2017. Iger believes the combined company should continue serving the more adult-oriented audience, but he said the more adult films will have to remain separate from other...

Amazon says babies now have their own Alexa API for childcare smart home gadgets

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:48 PM PST

It may not be too surprising to learn that new parents use Amazon a lot, for diapers, formula, and all manner of other childcare products that, in earlier times, you'd have to trek out to the store to buy in the middle of the night. So Amazon decided it was due time babies got their very own Alexa application programming interface, because you're not a viable segment of the population unless you have a dedicated digital voice assistant API.

Developers can now create custom skills for childcare-focused devices and mobile apps that make use of the company's voice assistant, in addition to Amazon's existing Echo line. And while it sounds vaguely dystopian, in the way most new tech products and features involving artificial intelligence do,...

ESPN+ was launched back in April for $4.99 per month or $49.99 for an annual membership. The service, which is powered by Disney's BAMTech division, offers "hundreds of MLB, NHL and MLS games, Grand Slam tennis, Top Rank boxing, PGA Tour golf, college sports, international rugby, cricket, the full library of ESPN Films including 30 for 30, and more." Tesla opens Amazon store that sells company-branded merch

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:46 PM PST

Tesla launched an online store for its merchandise on Amazon on Tuesday, as was first spotted by Electrek. The new Amazon store is already stocked with a number of different Tesla products, like branded iPhone X cases ($35-$45), hoodies ($70-$75), and 1:18 scale die-cast models of the company's cars ($250).

Tesla has dabbled with selling merchandise on its own website for a few years now alongside accessories for its cars. There's a Tesla-branded wireless smartphone charger, a portable battery, and a desktop version of the company's Supercharger with USB passthrough. Tesla even sells a Radio Flyer-made kids version of the Model S. More esoteric offerings have sometimes quickly come and gone, too, like a Tesla-branded surfboard, or j...

Every part of Disney is making exclusive content for the Disney+ streaming service

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:45 PM PST

Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke to investors during Disney's quarterly earnings call about the forthcoming Disney+ streaming service at length, but he still didn't offer any specifics. Pricing is still a mystery, and Iger didn't say much beyond the end of 2019 for a release window. More information will hopefully become available following Disney Investor Day on April 11th, where Iger and his team have said they will discuss the company's streaming plans in greater detail.

But we did learn one important thing today: Captain Marvel will be the first Disney movie that the company will completely withhold from its current streaming partners — meaning that it will be exclusively available on Disney+, and won't be available on Netflix.

After its theatrical run, Captain Marvel will be the first Disney+ exclusive film

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:34 PM PST

Disney is looking to invest heavily in exclusives for its upcoming streaming service, Disney+, and that means having movies like Captain Marvel stream exclusively on the service.

In an investors call on February 5th, Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors that Disney plans to forgo its current rate of $140 million year over year in licensing revenue, in favor of moving its currently licensed content to Disney+. He noted that Captain Marvel will be the first Disney movie that the company will completely withhold from its licensee partners. The news follows Disney's decision in 2017 to stop licensing its films to services like Netflix.

Iger also noted that creatives across many of Disney's biggest sub-brands, including Marvel, Pixar, and...

Xbox One controllers, Alexa-powered microwaves, and more are cheaper today

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:26 PM PST

If you're looking for discounts on tech, we've found a few today that may interest you. Amazon and Walmart are both selling the Xbox One controller for $37.17, which is lower than its usual sale price of around $40. If you're in need of a new controller for your Xbox One, this is an obvious choice, but this model has a feature that might appeal to non-Xbox owners: it supports Bluetooth, so you can easily connect it with Bluetooth-capable PCs, as well as Android smartphones for some Fortnite on the go. If your PC isn't Bluetooth-ready, 8BitDo's affordable Bluetooth adapter will fix that for $19.99. Additionally, the adapter and Xbox One controller combo work seamlessly on Nintendo Switch.
