Valve takes down user tributes memorializing the New Zealand shooting suspect Posted: 16 Mar 2019 02:23 PM PDT ![]() Valve removed more than 100 tributes to the alleged white supremacist responsible for the mass shooting at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand from Steam profiles, says Kotaku. In the days after the attack, it found that numerous users updated their profiles to include the name or image of the shooter, and in one case, a GIF of the attack. Kotaku says that it initially saw 66 profiles that paid tribute to the shooter in the aftermath of the attack, which claimed 50 lives. The number of tributes later surpassed 100. After contacting Valve for comment, the tributes were removed, although users were continuing to praise the shooter. Kotaku also says that "hundreds of pages continue to nod towards past mass shooters including perpetrators... |
Spotify responds to Apple, calling it a ‘monopolist’ Posted: 16 Mar 2019 12:48 PM PDT ![]() The tit-for-tat war of words between Spotify and Apple continued today, with the former calling the latter a "monopolist," and that it's response to the lawsuit was "entirely in line with our expectations," according to Variety. The statement is the latest in a highly public spat between the two companies. On Wednesday, Spotify filed a complaint with the European Union, alleging that Apple uses unfair practices in the App Store. Specifically, Spotify is upset at the 30 percent that Apple charges developers for subscriptions, and it says that it's designed to give Apple Music an unfair advantage in the marketplace. Essentially, to match Apple's price with its 30 percent cut, it can't match the price of Apple Music, and it's at the mercy... |
Apple and Stanford’s Apple Watch study identified irregular heartbeats in over 2,000 patients Posted: 16 Mar 2019 11:20 AM PDT ![]() Apple and the Stanford University School of Medicine each issued press releases today citing the results of the Apple Heart Study that they jointly announced in November 2017. Stanford Medicine also took its findings to the American College of Cardiology's 68th Annual Scientific Session and Expo today. Apple fully funded the study. The Apple Heart Study, which did not include the Apple Watch Series 4 (with its built-in ECG feature), included 419,093 participants. Apple says people from all 50 states participated over the course of eight months, and according to the university, around 0.5 percent of all participants — over 2,000 people — received notifications alerting them of heart rate irregularities over the course of the study.... |
7 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 16 Mar 2019 09:00 AM PDT ![]() I usually don't buy into the whole "you have to see it on the big screen" hype about certain movies, be it action blockbusters or just gorgeously shot art films. I still tend to see a lot of movies in theaters just because I want to see them, but the theater experience isn't necessarily something I find to be superior. But I will admit that you see things on an enormous screen that you don't on a TV. I've seen Pride & Prejudice a weird number of times at home, but it wasn't until I saw a recent screening of it at an Alamo Drafthouse that I noticed just how grainy and alive the film was. I don't know that it necessarily added to what is, regardless of the screen, an already gorgeous movie. But there was still something surprising about... |
Neil deGrasse Tyson will return to National Geographic after sexual misconduct allegations Posted: 16 Mar 2019 08:45 AM PDT ![]() National Geographic has completed its investigation reports of sexual misconduct by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and will resume plans to air two shows that he is involved with, Star Talk and Cosmos: Possible Worlds, reports Entertainment Weekly. According to EW, National Geographic did not disclose the findings of its investigation, only that it had concluded. We've reached out to National Geographic for comment, and will update this post if we hear back. In 2017 and 2018, Three women stepped forward claims of sexual misconduct, two of which accused deGrasse Tyson of unwanted advances, while the other said that he raped her while they were together in grad school in the 1980s. Following the allegations, National Geographic and... |

American Gods will get a third season and a new showrunner Posted: 16 Mar 2019 07:24 AM PDT ![]() The second season of American Gods just premiered on Starz this past week, and fans can breath easy: Deadline reports that the network has renewed the series for a third season, and has brought on Hemlock Grove and Walking Dead producer Charles Eglee to serve as showrunner. The first woman to fly commercial to space describes what it’s like to see Earth from 55 miles up Posted: 16 Mar 2019 07:00 AM PDT ![]() On February 22nd, Virgin Galactic's passenger spaceplane VSS Unity took to the skies above the Mojave Desert in California during a test flight, carrying a type of rider it's never had before. On board the vehicle was Beth Moses, the first passenger the Unity has ever flown. Along with the plane's two pilots, the trio climbed to a height of 55.85 miles (89.9 kilometers) — what many consider to be the beginning of space. The short flight qualified Moses for commercial astronaut wings from the Federal Aviation Administration. And that means she's now the first woman to fly to space on a commercial vehicle. After the groundbreaking test flight, we caught up with Moses to... |
Everything we think we know about Google’s mystery gaming announcement Posted: 16 Mar 2019 06:00 AM PDT ![]() Google is making a big play in gaming next week, but we're still unsure exactly what that entails. For years, the company has toyed with the idea of getting involved in what is now the biggest sector of the entertainment industry, worth an estimated $138 billion dollars as of last fall. And it would make competitive sense: Amazon owns Twitch, Facebook acquired Oculus, and Microsoft has Xbox. The only other major tech company without a serious gaming platform or investment of its own, not counting mobile app stores, is Apple, although even the iPhone maker is now rumored to be working on a game subscription service of its own. Google has always had many of the pieces required to challenge the likes of Sony and Nintendo. The Android... |
