The SEC says Elon Musk is in ‘blatant violation’ of securities fraud settlement

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 06:47 PM PDT

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says Elon Musk hasn't made a "good faith" effort to comply with the settlement the two sides reached last year over fraud charges related to his attempt to take Tesla private, according to a new court filing. The SEC reiterated its request Monday to have Musk held in contempt of court over a February 19th tweet that the commission says is a "blatant violation" of the settlement.

Last week, Musk called the SEC's contempt request an "unconstitutional power grab" and said that the tweet in question didn't contain information that affected Tesla's stock price. The two sides and the court have until March 26th to decide whether to hold a hearing to air out their differences. The SEC said Monday...

SHODAN returns in System Shock 3 trailer

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 06:24 PM PDT

OtherSide Entertainment has dropped the first real teaser trailer for its upcoming System Shock revival, offering a look at some "pre-alpha in-engine" footage of a doomed space station under the control of murderous AI SHODAN. The System Shock 3 trailer was shown at Unity's Game Developers Conference keynote, confirming that the game will use the Unity engine.

System Shock 3 sees original producer Warren Spector return to the legendary immersive sim series. The game has undergone a protracted development and recently lost its publisher, Starbreeze, which is in serious financial trouble. Despite this, last month Spector said "The team is still, as we say, 'psyched and cranking' — in other words, continuing as normal. I'm confident we can...

Unity’s latest demo is a gorgeous sci-fi short starring a lifelike virtual hero

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 06:00 PM PDT

The latest jaw-dropping demo from Unity, one of the most widely used game engines in the world, isn't just an example of how developers can use new shadow effects or rendering tools. It's also a darkly beautiful philosophical journey stuffed into a short animated film. "I'm fascinated by technology and its impact on us as humans; our psychology, sense of self-identification, and our deeply ingrained sense of spirituality," explains Veselin Efremov, creative director at Unity's demo team. "I thought it would be fun to explore these existential and philosophical themes in the guise of a simpler adventure story."

The new short film is called The Heretic, and it lasts less than four minutes. In it, a man in a beat-up leather jacket, one that...

Devin Nunes sues Twitter for letting ‘Devin Nunes’ Mom’ and ‘Devin Nunes’ Cow’ insult him

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 05:30 PM PDT

US Representative Devin Nunes has sued Twitter and a handful of users for defamation and negligence, accusing Twitter of acting as a "vessel of opposition research" for hosting accounts that insulted Nunes. The suit is the latest of several filed against social media platforms for alleged bias against conservative politicians, none of which have made substantial progress in court.

Nunes' lawsuit mostly focuses on a cluster of Twitter accounts that Nunes claims were coordinating libelous attacks on him, primarily "Devin Nunes' Cow", the now-suspended "Devin Nunes' Mom", and the account of Republican political consultant Liz Mair. The complaintpublished by Fox News this afternoon — quotes numerous tweets from those accounts, which it...

Nvidia is bringing ray tracing to old GPUs that can’t ray trace worth a damn

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 04:57 PM PDT

How do you convince gamers that they're getting their money's worth from a $500+ graphics card? Nvidia's latest technique is pretty smart — it's taking real-time ray tracing, an eye-popping if barely adopted feature previously exclusive to its pricey new RTX-series graphics cards, and bringing it to a whole bunch of older Nvidia GTX-series GPUs that can't ray trace to save their lives.

I'm partly joking. It's pretty cool that I'll soon be able to try out some "basic" DirectX Raytracing with my nearly three-year-old Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU! Here are the other graphics cards and chips that should be able to take advantage with a driver update this April:

But seriously: Nvidia's blog post seems explicitly designed to...

Nvidia announces $99 AI computer for developers, makers, and researchers

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 04:00 PM PDT

The Jetson Nano devkit (left) and production-ready module (right).

In recent years, advances in AI have produced algorithms for everything from image recognition to instantaneous translation. But when it comes to applying these advances in the real world, we're only just getting started. A new product from Nvidia announced today at GTC — a $99 AI computer called the Jetson Nano — should help speed that process.

The Nano is the latest in Nvidia's line of Jetson embedded computing boards, used to provide the brains for robots and other AI-powered devices. Plug one of these into your latest creation, and it'll be able to handle tasks like object recognition and autonomous navigation without relying on cloud processing power.

This sort of setup is known as edge computing, and because it means that the...

UFC makes ESPN+ streaming service the exclusive home of all future pay-per-view fights

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 02:42 PM PDT

The UFC and ESPN jointly announced this afternoon that ESPN+ will become the exclusive destination for and distributor of the MMA company's pay-per-view events. The seven-year deal expands on the partnership between UFC and ESPN's standalone streaming service, which replaced Fox Sports as the home of UFC Fight Night earlier this year. ESPN+ already streamed preliminary matches for UFC pay-per-views under that deal, but now it's becoming the central go-to for everything. UFC handles all production of its own events, but Disney hopes that being the place where consumers go to watch it will be a major boost for its first direct-to-consumer streaming service.

New ESPN+ subscribers will be able to subscribe to one year of the service, plus a...

Nebraska flooding shows (again) how extreme weather can threaten national security

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 02:34 PM PDT

Catastrophic flooding in Nebraska has wiped out roads, overtopped dams, and left at least a third of the Offutt Air Force Base submerged, highlighting the ongoing threat that extreme weather poses to both people's lives, and national security.

A massive winter storm created a "bomb cyclone" over parts of the country last week, and dumped snow and rain on Nebraska. Rain slicked off frozen ground, snow melted, and ice thawed on rivers — kicking off devastating floods that killed at least two people in the state and destroyed hundreds of homes. "This was a monster, no question about it," Greg Carbin at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center told the Omaha World-Herald.

Now, the Omaha World-Herald r...

Is this robotic therapy pet the uncanny valley of dog?

Posted: 18 Mar 2019 02:08 PM PDT

There's no shortage of social robots that promise to provide companionship, and the Tombot Puppy is the latest therapy robot to offer the kind of unconditional love that only a dog can give, provided the batteries stay charged forever. The golden Labrador retriever barks, wags, and responds to touch, providing emotional support to seniors, people with dementia, and anyone who can't have a live pet. It's funding now on Kickstarter and has already reached its $20,000 goal.

Tombot's creators wanted the robot to look and behave as close to a real dog as possible, so they enlisted the help of Jim Henson's Creature Shop for the design. As a result, Tombot moves a lot like an animatronic puppet, (it sort of reminds me of Falkor from The N...
