Nintendo Labo VR hands-on: virtual reality goes DIY

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 06:00 PM PDT

Nearly one year after the launch of Labo, Nintendo's DIY cardboard accessory line for the Switch, the company is releasing its fourth kit: an introduction to VR for kids. While we tend to think of virtual reality as isolating, Nintendo's Labo VR Kit reimagines the VR experience with "simple and shareable" minigames designed to get multiple people playing and interacting.

All of the games have to be played with the headset held up to your face, which has its pros and cons. On one hand, little arms could get tired holding the Switch screen after a while; but on the other, some of minigames are designed to be played in turns, and it's quicker to pass around the screen than it is to deal with all the fuss taking a headset on and off. Passing...

Tesla brings back its customer referral program — with fewer free cars

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 05:31 PM PDT

Tesla killed off its customer referral program on February 1st, citing high costs — presumably because the company was giving away dozens and dozens of $250,000 cars for free — but in a typical Elon Musk about-face, the company just announced it's bringing the referral program back with a few tweaks on top.

Basically, your benefits for convincing your friends and family to buy a Tesla have been reduced quite a bit, but they're still nothing to sneeze at. Do it, and you'll get 1,000 miles of free Supercharging, plus get entered into two drawings: a monthly chance to win a Tesla Model Y Founders Series, and a quarterly chance at that coveted, signed-by-Elon-Musk-founders' version of the Tesla Roadster.

(You get two chances at those...

Norway will install the world’s first wireless electric car charging stations for Oslo taxis

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 05:20 PM PDT

Norway's capital city of Oslo will be the world's first metropolitan area to install wireless, induction-based charging stations for electric taxis, in a bid to make a zero-emission cab system by as early as 2023, according to Reuters. Norway wants to go even further than that, however, and is mandating that all new cars sold in the country be all-electric by 2025.

To pull off the taxi charging system, Norway is tapping Finnish utilities firm Fortum, which is working with US company Momentum Dynamics and the municipal government of Oslo to install charging plates in the road that connect to energy receivers in the vehicles themselves. The goal is to make it as easy as possible to charge electric taxis, as doing so now is cumbersome,...

How League of Legends ended up on The Simpsons

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 03:22 PM PDT

The Simpsons aired an episode featuring the popular game League of Legends last Sunday, which was a strange combination of two groups that don't often collide — esports fanatics and sitcom cartoons. The production team consulted with Riot Games, which develops League, but ultimately crafted a satirical take on League of Legends without giving Riot a final vote.

Nevertheless, Riot Games' co-head of e-sports Whalen Rozelle seems comfortable with the result, telling The Verge after watching the episode, "As the show is a satirical comedy, we knew they would present their own take. While we were heavily involved as consultants, we were comfortable giving The Simpsons team full control over how they wanted to present e-sports in the show,...

Walmart is reportedly looking into launching its own cloud gaming service

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 03:00 PM PDT

Cloud gaming services are one of the biggest topics in tech this week, and yet, you wouldn't necessarily expect that Walmart would enter the fray. Google's announcement of Stadia, its upcoming game-streaming service, is already being intercepted by a report at US Gamer. "Multiple sources familiar with Walmart's plans, who wish to remain anonymous" tell USG that Walmart is at least exploring the possibilities of launching its own cloud gaming service to compete with the likes of Google's own.

If you think about it, it's not entirely unlikely. As one of the largest retail corporations in the world, Walmart surely has the capital to fund a pet project like this. What's even more interesting is that Walmart has shown it's theoretically...

WeChat could get a lot more fun outside China with global mini games

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 02:06 PM PDT

WeChat, China's ubiquitous messaging and payments platform, is now opening up its mini games platform to developers worldwide — meaning that WeChat outside of China could soon get a lot more interesting. The mini games platform is a tab inside the WeChat app where users can enjoy basic games like Tetris, and it's part of what makes WeChat so addicting within China.

Even so, there are several hurdles to playing mini games on WeChat. It's tricky figuring out how to access mini games. You'll have to head into the main WeChat search bar and type in "games," which will lead you to a list of mini games that are mostly in Chinese. The pages that list the games are likewise in Chinese, so while it's easy enough to tap on a photo of a game that...

Epic Games Store chief says they’ll eventually stop paying for exclusive PC games

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Developer Epic Games has been shaking up the industry in more ways than one since launching the massively popular and influential Fortnite in 2017. Starting last December, the company has been using its newfound wealth from the battle royale hit to fund its PC marketplace, the Epic Games Store, which offers game developers a more generous 88-12 percent revenue split than the competition.

In addition to that, Epic has been paying out large sums of money to developers to launch their games exclusively on its store, creating a particularly heated point of contention between PC game fans and the company. As a result, the store has grown to 85 million users, thanks largely to Fortnite's active player base, Epic announced today at the Game...

Comcast announces $5-per-month Flex streaming platform for cord cutters

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 01:50 PM PDT

Days before Apple announces an expanded plan to sell video service subscriptions, Comcast has unveiled Flex, a streaming platform targeted at non-cable customers who have signed up for the company's broadband internet. Flex costs $5 monthly and also comes with a set-top streaming box that includes Netflix, Prime Video, HBO, and other apps; you also get Comcast's X1 voice remote as part of the service. It launches March 26th for all Comcast Xfinity internet customers nationwide. CNBC originally reported that such a product was coming back in November.

Comcast is touting that Flex brings together content from these services into one single integrated guide, where you can find something to watch and then switch over to the app to watch....

eBay is adding support for Google Pay

Posted: 21 Mar 2019 12:15 PM PDT

eBay is adding Google Pay as a payment option to its Android app, mobile web, and desktop site. The feature will begin rolling out in early April.

The announcement post cites Millennials and Generation Z shoppers who increasingly make purchases from their phones and digital wallets as a reason for the new addition. eBay has shifted away from its reliance on PayPal since the companies split apart in 2015, and is focusing on offering customers more choices in their payment options. The post further details that "eBay's managed payments experience allows users to check out without leaving the platform," unlike PayPal, which sends users to a different site to finish payment. Today's move is part of eBay's efforts to manage most of its own...
