Rocket Lab successfully launches small experimental satellite for DARPA

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 06:03 PM PDT

Small satellite launcher Rocket Lab successfully pulled off its first flight of the year out of New Zealand this evening, sending an experimental communications satellite into orbit for DARPA. It marks the third commercial flight of Rocket Lab's small Electron rocket, and the fifth flight overall for the fledgling company, which just began launching rockets in 2017.

Dubbed the R3D2 mission, the flight sent up a small, 330-pound satellite into orbit, designed to test out a new kind of radio antenna. Made out of a type of material known as Kapton, the antenna is as thin as tissue paper, but able to grow in size while in space. The antenna launched on the rocket folded up inside a canister, and now that it's in orbit, the antenna will...

How a supercomputer is helping AT&T prepare for extreme weather

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 02:56 PM PDT

AT&T has a new climate change risk-assessment tool, developed with the help of Argonne National Laboratory's scientists and supercomputing power, CNBC reports. The telecommunications company hopes to protect its infrastructure from the flooding and extreme weather events that are projected to increase as climate change continues.

A few years ago, AT&T started thinking about the long-term risks that climate change posed to its equipment. For example, the company has cell towers and sites across the country that are vulnerable to flooding and might need to be lifted above encroaching waters. In other places, services rely on above-ground copper wires that can blow down in large storms, and which might be safer buried underground as...

Zammis Clark, known online as Slipstream or Raylee, was charged on multiple counts of computer misuse offenses in a London Crown Court on Thursday, and pleaded guilty to hacking into Microsoft and Nintendo networks.

Prosecutors revealed that Clark had gained access to a Microsoft server on January 24th, 2017 using an internal username and password, and then uploaded a web shell to remotely access Microsoft's network freely for at least three weeks. Twitch Prime now comes with a free year of Nintendo Switch Online service

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 01:10 PM PDT

Twitch has announced its latest benefit for its Twitch Prime subscribers: a free year of Nintendo Switch Online service, which usually costs $19.99.

The streaming site is giving out the free service in a two-stage process: first, subscribers will be able to claim a free three-month membership, and after 60 days, they'll be able to come back to get the other nine months (presumably to stop people from signing up for a single month, claiming the free year, and bailing.) The deal is open to both new and existing Switch Online subscribers — current users will get the extra months added to their existing plan.

Given that Twitch Prime is part of Amazon Prime, which costs $12.99 per month or...

HUD reportedly also investigating Google and Twitter in housing discrimination probe

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 12:52 PM PDT

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development, which just filed housing discrimination charges against Facebook for its advertising policies, is reportedly scrutinizing Google and Twitter's policies as well. The Washington Post writes that HUD officials told Twitter and Google about a probe into their advertising policies last year; a review is supposedly still ongoing. "They want to make sure that other companies aren't getting away with something that one company is investigated for," an anonymous source told the Post.

The HUD first announced a complaint against Facebook last year, and it filed the suit soon after Facebook reached a major settlement with civil rights groups earlier this month. While Facebook agreed to remove...

Boston Dynamics’ updated Handle robot will beat you at warehouse Jenga

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 12:34 PM PDT

Boston Dynamics — producers of everyone's favorite robots that can run, backflip, and generally unnerve the human populationis back with its latest bot: a "reimagined" version of its Handle robot from 2017. And this time, it's really, really good at stacking boxes.

The original Handle was designed largely as an experiment that applied Boston Dynamics' robot know-how (typically used for bipedal or quadrupedal bots) to one with wheels. The new version looks far more polished, though, applying the original into an actually useful machine that can automatically load and unload pallets of products in a warehouse, as demonstrated in the video. It's easy to see the applications of Handle in automating warehouse work (like say,...

Watch the first colorful, chaos-filled trailer for Borderlands 3

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 12:19 PM PDT

Nearly a decade after the original Borderlands, Gearbox Software has announced a third main installment in the series — alongside a trailer that features a few familiar characters. There's very little hard detail about its plot, features, or release date, but this marks the first new, numbered game since 2012, and we'll supposedly learn more about it on April 3rd.

The Borderlands 3 trailer seems to promise the same thing as Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. It looks like a colorful shooter for up to four players, with a distinctive cartoonish style and endless ("over one billion," up from the original game's literally world record-holding 17.75 million) varieties of procedurally generated firearms.

Yesterday, a...
