Tesla penalized for violating hazardous waste law at California factory

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:07 PM PDT

Tesla has reached a settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency over hazardous waste violations that were discovered at the company's factory in Fremont, California. Tesla has agreed to pay a $31,000 penalty, and, as part of the settlement, it will also buy $55,000 worth of emergency response equipment for the Fremont Fire Department.

In 2017, Tesla allowed hazardous waste to accumulate on site without a permit beyond the allowed 90 days, according to the settlement (seen below), a copy of which was provided to The Verge by the EPA. The EPA found Tesla failed to "promptly clean up flammable paint and or solvent mixtures," left two 55-gallon containers of hazardous waste open with "no gasket or locking mechanism," and violated...

Valve’s Index VR headset will ship this June, with preorders starting May 1st

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:05 PM PDT

The Valve Index VR headset in its full form.

Valve's product page for the Valve Index headset has gone live a little early with a release date pegged for June 15th of this year. First spotted by Twitter user @Wario64, Valve's page is scarce on information regarding features, but it's still giving us more information to work with than that teaser site did last week, including several specs for Valve's upcoming and mysterious VR headset.

Immediately, you'll notice the integrated open-back earphones flanking each side, which is an interesting design choice that might keep the user aware of their surroundings while immersed in virtual reality. Integrated headphones are nothing new for virtual reality headsets, but an open-back design — or at least what appears to be — is definitely...

The best initial episode of Jordan Peele’s Twilight Zone is free on YouTube

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:48 PM PDT

Audiences should always be a little wary of any new show or film that reportedly debuts on April Fools' Day, especially if it seems too good to be true or too weird to believe. (We're still withholding judgment on indie auteur Jim Jarmusch supposedly making a super goofy zombie comedy, for instance.) But for some shows, like Jordan Peele's inherently twist-and-surprise-oriented reboot of the 1950s classic series The Twilight Zone, April 1st seems like an appropriate kick-off date. The show launches today, solely on the subscription-only service CBS All Access.

But for the curious (and the hard-to-convince, since these days, few people seem excited about the prospect of signing on for yet another proprietary, fee-based subscription...

Bose QC 35 II noise-canceling headphones are almost $100 off at Rakuten

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:31 AM PDT

Bose's QuietComfort 35 Series II are almost $100 off of their usual $349 price today for anyone who makes a free Rakuten account. Even without the discount applied, the online storefront already offers them for $47 less than most retailers, but you can save even more at checkout until 11:59PM ET, April 3rd by entering the code ALT46 to pay $257.99 for these over-ear headphones.

We've seen discounts like this from Rakuten before, so more are likely to come if you miss out on this one. But anyone who's after headphones that deliver solid noise-canceling when you want to concentrate, and support for Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands, will find a lot to like here.

Only outclassed by the $349 Sony 1000XM3, a better all-around choice...

Uber sued for $10 million by woman who was sexually assaulted by her driver

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:31 AM PDT

A resident of Washington, DC, is suing Uber for negligence and consumer protection violations, after she was sexually assaulted by one of the ride-hail company's drivers. The victim, listed only as "Jane Doe" in court documents, claims Uber portrays itself as a safe mode of transportation for women, especially if they have been drinking, when in fact they are putting those women in harm's way.

The victim was sexually assaulted by an Uber driver named Raul E. Rodriguez Vasquez on April 1st, 2018, according to court documents. She later told a social worker, who contacted the police. They collected DNA evidence linking Vasquez to the assault. He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse and is currently in jail.

Chrome extension replaces Google’s algorithmic canned replies with equally random lines of poetry

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:14 AM PDT

Google traditionally plagues the internet with April Fools' gags on April 1st, but developer Chris Zubak-Skees has beaten the internet giant at its own game today with Suggested poems, a Chrome extension that replaces Google's algorithmically generated canned replies with random lines of poetry.

As Zubak-Skees clarifies in his thread, the extension is "absolutely not" endorsed by Google in any way. But honestly, his tweak is better since it's totally opt-in by requiring you to intentionally install a Chrome...

Reddit’s r/Games closes on April Fools’ Day to protest bigoted, ‘vitriolic’ users

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:41 AM PDT

The moderators of Reddit's popular r/Games subreddit are using April Fools' Day to protest bigoted and "awful" comments. The subreddit, which boasts 1.7 million members, is closing for the day. Posts and comments are locked. In an announcement, the moderators highlight what they call a growing problem with discrimination, harassment, and vitriolic attacks.

"This April Fools', we decided to take things a little more seriously and shed some light on a growing, pervasive issue that has affected the community of r/Games and gaming communities as a whole," the moderators wrote in a post. "What has been intended to be a forum for the potential spread of knowledge and involvement in video games has instead become a battleground of conflicting...

PlayStation Store will now refund preorders and games, but only if you haven’t downloaded them

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:54 AM PDT

Sony has enacted a refund policy for purchases made from the PlayStation Store. This is kicking off today — no coincidence, given that Sony just cut off third-party retailers from selling digital download codes for products redeemable on the PlayStation Store. The terms for refund differ slightly depending on the type of content you're returning, but with the exception of subscriptions like PS Plus and PS Now, you won't be able to get credit back on a purchase once you play it — or even download it.

For preorders, you have up to 14 days from the purchase date to receive a refund, but only if you haven't started to download or stream the content — this includes preloading. If you're eligible to get your money back, Sony will return it to...

Cloudflare is adding a free VPN to its 1.1.1.1 app

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:32 AM PDT

Cloudflare has announced that it's adding a VPN to its 1.1.1.1 DNS resolver app. The 1.1.1.1 service, which first came to mobile back in November, currently attempts to speed up mobile data speeds by using Cloudflare's network to resolve DNS queries faster than your existing mobile network. What's new is Warp, a VPN built by Cloudflare that attempts to reroute your traffic to make it even quicker and also encrypts it where possible for added security and privacy.

As well as offering the privacy and security of other mobile VPNs, Cloudflare has designed Warp to be better optimized for mobile. For example, it uses the WireGuard VPN protocol, which Cloudflare claims should reduce battery drain compared to a typical VPN app. Cloudflare also...

The first trailer for Jim Jarmusch’s zombie movie is deeply wacky

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:28 AM PDT

Indie writer-director Jim Jarmusch isn't exactly known for his wacky slapstick comedy. For decades now, Jarmusch has made movies that mostly reside in an area of cool, detached grunge. His early classics, like Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law, and Mystery Train, all operate in a melancholy that's removed from the world. That same drifting, dreamy tone extends to films like Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai and his previous feature film, 2016's poetry-focused portrait movie Paterson. So it's a little odd to see him embracing full-on goofy comedy beats in the trailer for his upcoming zombie feature The Dead Don't Die.

The trailer is a who's who of favorite Jarmusch actors from his decades of filmmaking, including Adam Driver, Bill...
