Sony launches S.Ride taxi-hailing service in Tokyo Posted: 15 Apr 2019 08:27 PM PDT A joint venture spearheaded by Sony has launched a taxi-hailing service in Tokyo today, marking another major entry into Japan's unusual transportation landscape. Minna no Taxi's S.Ride app is available to use from today and lets users flag down regular taxis; payment can be handled with cash, credit card, or through a QR code-powered digital wallet. The S in S.Ride doesn't stand for Sony, as you might expect — a press release describes the service as "simple, smart, and speedy." The name can also be read as a pun of sorts, as the app's UI is based around a sliding gesture. Sony says S.Ride uses AI technology to predict where demand will be highest and dispatch drivers accordingly. Minna no Taxi (Everybody's Taxi)... |
Aston Martin’s first electric car is finally here Posted: 15 Apr 2019 07:00 PM PDT The first all-electric Aston Martin has finally been revealed, nearly four years after it was originally announced. Based on the existing combustion-engine Aston Martin Rapide sedan, the "Rapide E" officially debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show on Tuesday. Only 155 will be made, and Aston Martin didn't announce a price for the car. Powered by an 800-volt, 65kWh battery, Aston Martin estimates the Rapide E will be able to travel "over 200 miles" on a single charge. Twin motors mounted on the rear axle will generate 450kW (or over 600 horsepower) and can get the car up to a top speed of 155 miles per hour. That will happen fairly quickly, too — Aston Martin says the Rapide E will go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under four seconds (which is... |
Get destroyed by OpenAI’s masterful Dota 2 bots this weekend Posted: 15 Apr 2019 03:50 PM PDT OpenAI achieved a historic milestone in the world of artificial intelligence this weekend when its Dota 2 system, called OpenAI Five, handily bested the strategy game's world champion e-sports team, OG, in a best-of-three contest. Now, the AI research organization wants to let the public get a taste of what it's like to play against a program that's virtually trained for the equivalent of 45,000 years to play the game at the highest possible level. The company is calling the platform Arena, and it will be live for just three days starting Thursday, April 18th at 9PM ET. You can sign up here to get access, as OpenAI says it needs to allocate the proper amount of compute to handle the simultaneous play sessions for its cloud-based AI... |
AT&T may have just signaled the end of Hulu as you know it today Posted: 15 Apr 2019 02:55 PM PDT Hulu might look very different a year from now. AT&T has sold its roughly 10 percent stake in Hulu back to the streaming service today for $1.43 billion dollars, making it that much more likely that Hulu will become a Disney-centric service in the future. Just last year, Hulu was still divided evenly between Disney, Fox, and Comcast — each owning a 30 percent cut of the company — alongside AT&T's roughly 10 percent stake. But Disney gained a controlling interest in Hulu when it bought Fox, and the AT&T sale means Disney now owns a staggering 66 percent of the service, with Comcast owning the remaining 33 percent. But it's not just about the money and the percent-ownership; Disney gaining... |
Google teases new Pixel announcement for May 7th Posted: 15 Apr 2019 02:55 PM PDT "Something big is coming to the Pixel universe," reads a new teaser on the Google Store, offering a strong hint that the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL phones are set for an announcement at the company's I/O 2019 keynote on May 7th. Details about both have leaked over the last few months (even on Google's own website), with Google expected to introduce the pair of devices at a lower price point than the flagship Pixel 3 and 3 XL that were launched last year. The 3a line will reportedly offer the same camera performance, which has become Google's signature strength, but make downgrades elsewhere including build (these are rumored to be plastic-backed phones), screen resolution, and processing power. The Google Store page's "help is on the... |
A South Carolina prison tested ‘micro-jamming’ cellphone signals Posted: 15 Apr 2019 02:52 PM PDT The US Federal Bureau of Prisons recently ran a test for jamming contraband cellphones in a South Carolina state correctional facility. "Micro-jamming," or disrupting phone signals within a very precise area, was tested in a federal prison last year. But this test signaled that state prisons — which generally don't have the authority to mess with phone signals — could be on their way to using the technology. The test was held last week at the maximum-security Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia, South Carolina. According to the Associated Press, it lasted five days and involved jamming signals in a housing unit. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which oversaw the test, will analyze the... |
Westworld won’t return until 2020, HBO chiefs confirm Posted: 15 Apr 2019 02:43 PM PDT The final season of Game of Thrones is wrapping up over the next few weeks, but fans of Westworld (HBO's other star-studded, high-profile genre show) are still in for a bit of a wait, with WarnerMedia Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt and HBO president of programming Casey Bloys confirming to Deadline that the series won't return until 2020. There's been speculation for a while that Westworld wouldn't be back in 2019, but now it's official. The news also raises a question — with Game of Thrones ending and Westworld not on the schedule for a year or more, what will HBO's new marquee show be? Bloys doesn't seem concerned about holes in the company's programming, pointing to shows like Succession, S... |
SpaceX loses the center core of its Falcon Heavy rocket due to choppy seas Posted: 15 Apr 2019 01:59 PM PDT SpaceX successfully landed the center core of its Falcon Heavy rocket on a drone ship last week, but the vehicle accidentally fell into the ocean while in transit to the Florida coast. The company blamed the loss on choppy seas. "Over the weekend, due to rough sea conditions, SpaceX's recovery team was unable to secure the center core booster for its return trip to Port Canaveral," SpaceX said in a statement to The Verge. "As conditions worsened with eight to ten foot swells, the booster began to shift and ultimately was unable to remain upright. While we had hoped to bring the booster back intact, the safety of our team always takes precedence. We do not expect future missions to be impacted." |
Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a may come to T-Mobile Posted: 15 Apr 2019 01:30 PM PDT Google's Pixel 3a, the all-but-announced midrange phone that leaked on Google's own storefront, may be coming to T-Mobile. Sources speaking to 9to5Google and Android Police shared that the carrier has begun testing the Pixel 3a on its network, and that T-Mobile may soon begin selling the upcoming phone in its stores alongside the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. This would mark the end of Verizon's exclusivity deal that made it the only US carrier allowed to sell Google's phones. It's unclear if such a change would impact only the third generation of Pixel phones, or iterations to come as well. T-Mobile support for Pixel phones is nothing new; all previous Google Pixel models have worked on T-Mobile, as well as the other GSM and CDMA... |
What Arya’s new weapon could mean for Game of Thrones Posted: 15 Apr 2019 01:07 PM PDT Spoilers ahead for "Winterfell," episode 1 of Game of Thrones, season 8. In Game of Thrones' season 8 premiere, Arya Stark reunites with her crush, Gendry, who's also a blacksmith, and asks him to make her a mysterious new weapon. We only get a quick look at a design she's drawn, but there are a few clues from Arya's past about what the weapon could be. Arya's arsenal is fairly full already. In season 7, she got her hands on a new weapon, an unnamed dagger made of Valyrian steel, the same one used in an assassination attempt against her younger brother, Bran Stark. She also has her sword, Needle, which Jon Snow gave her in season 1. That weapon has served her well in the Water Dance sword fighting style, where she has to be agile and... |
