Smaller, cheaper Nintendo Switch coming this fall before more powerful version: Nikkei Posted: 17 Apr 2019 07:41 PM PDT Nintendo's rumored cheaper version of the Switch is set to be released this fall, according to a report in Japan's Nikkei newspaper. As previously reported, the device is said to be smaller and geared around portable play, but Nikkei says it will retain the ability to be hooked up to a TV. A more powerful "next-generation" version with a major redesign is further off, according to today's report, although it's not clear from the language whether Nikkei is referring to the enhanced Switch model that The Wall Street Journal has reported is likely to be coming this year. Nikkei's report largely focuses on the internal culture and future challenges faced by Nintendo. Among other anecdotes, it cites that a major parts supplier for the... |
Samsung responds to Galaxy Fold screen damage: ‘we will thoroughly inspect these units’ Posted: 17 Apr 2019 07:30 PM PDT Samsung has released an official statement addressing reports of display issues with the upcoming Galaxy Fold. There are two parts to the story, and unfortunately only one of those parts offers real answers. First, Samsung notes that it intends to "thoroughly inspect [the review] units in person," referring to the devices that seemed to have had screens break without a direct, obvious cause. Our review unit developed a bulge that appeared to be the result of something in between the screen and the hinge, ultimately breaking the screen. So we don't have a clear answer there yet. Separately, Samsung addressed the issue of screens breaking because reviewers had attempted to peel off a protective plastic layer that was adhered to the screen... |
Facebook confirms it’s working on an AI voice assistant for Portal and Oculus products Posted: 17 Apr 2019 03:16 PM PDT Facebook has confirmed a report from earlier today saying it's working on an artificial intelligence-based digital voice assistant in the vein of Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant. The news, first reported by CNBC, indicates Facebook isn't giving up on a vision it first put out years ago, when it began developing an AI assistant for its Messenger platform simply called M. This time around, however, Facebook says it is focusing less on messaging and more on platforms in which hands-free interaction, via voice control and potentially gesture control, is paramount. "We are working to develop voice and AI assistant technologies that may work across our family of AR/VR products including Portal, Oculus and future products," a Facebook... |
16 people arrested for allegedly stealing 100 Car2Go luxury cars Posted: 17 Apr 2019 03:11 PM PDT Chicago police have arrested more than a dozen people for ripping off luxury cars from the rental app Car2Go. CBS Chicago reporter Brad Edwards tweeted the news this afternoon, stating that as many as 100 pricey Mercedes-Benz cars went missing after a "hack" — a number Car2Go confirms, though the company says the problem is fraud, not a security breach. We still don't know how the cars were stolen, but the problem is supposedly limited to Chicago, and local police say they're working "across several districts" to recover the 100 wayward vehicles. Car2Go was founded by German car manufacturer Daimler, and members can use an app to rent a super-compact Smart car or a Mercedes-Benz — but suspects apparently targeted the latter. Edwards also... |
Lime’s electric scooters will be able to tell when you’re too drunk to ride Posted: 17 Apr 2019 12:50 PM PDT Lime co-founder and executive chairman Brad Bao chatted with The Verge's editor-in-chief Nilay Patel and senior transportation reporter Andrew J. Hawkins about what's next for the e-scooter revolution in this week's Vergecast interview. Bao discussed how scooter-sharing companies could better promote safety without compromising the convenience, as well as how his company is protecting its customers' private data. You can listen to the discussion in its entirety on The Vergecast right now. Below is a lightly edited excerpt from this interview regarding some of Bao's ideas about how to keep drunk riders from using Lime's scooters. Andrew J. Hawkins: Is there an innovative way of looking at how you can promote safety in a way that you... |
Google Assistant can now ‘gently’ wake you up with Philips Hue lights Posted: 17 Apr 2019 12:24 PM PDT Google is rolling out a new feature to Google Assistant today that will allow a Google Home device to work in concert with a Philips Hue light setup to gently wake you up in the morning or go to sleep at night by gradually raising or lowering the lights over the course of 30 minutes. The feature — fittingly called Gentle Sleep & Wake — is designed to mimic a sunrise and sunset. It will let you get the kind of luxury experience that people who can afford homes and apartments with natural light get on a daily basis but through cold, artificial Wi-Fi lightbulbs instead. It's basically the same thing. Gentle Wake can be set up either by asking Google Assistant to "Turn on Gentle Wake... |
Student used ‘USB Killer’ device to destroy $58,000 worth of college computers Posted: 17 Apr 2019 12:07 PM PDT A former student of The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, has pled guilty to charges that he destroyed tens of thousands of dollars worth of campus computers using a USB device designed to instantly overwhelm and fry their circuitry. The plea was announced Tuesday by the Department of Justice, FBI, and Albany Police Department. Vishwanath Akuthota, the former student, now faces up to 10 years in prison (with up to three years of supervision after release) and a fine totaling up to $250,000. He was arrested and taken into custody in North Carolina on February 22nd, just over a week after he went on a spree of inserting the "USB Killer" device into 66 of Saint Rose's computers around various locations on campus. Such devices can... |
Hail Satan? puts the fun in Satanic fundamentalism Posted: 17 Apr 2019 11:53 AM PDT Welcome to Cheat Sheet, our brief breakdown-style reviews of festival films, VR previews, and other special event releases. This review was originally published after the film's premiere at the the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It has been updated to reflect the film's theatrical release, starting April 17th. In 2013, an organization billing itself as The Satanic Temple made a minor news splash when it mounted a press conference at the Florida State Capitol to praise Governor Rick Scott for signing a bill to permit student-led "inspirational messages" at school events. The group issued a statement in support of freedom of religion, saying that the bill "has reaffirmed our American freedom to practice our faith openly, allowing our Satanic... |

Nintendo Labo director says VR was part of the plan from the beginning Posted: 17 Apr 2019 11:44 AM PDT Nintendo Labo VR, the cardboard accessory kit for the Switch, is up against a lot of expectations as the company's official foray into virtual reality. It's the fourth installment of the Labo series, which first launched one year ago to mixed reviews. Parents and schools lauded its tactile building experience and programming features as creative educational tools for kids, while some critics dismissed it as a novelty item that lost its fun after the first few plays. But Labo director Tsubasa Sakaguchi is unfazed by the detractors. "We're not focused on the passive playing experience, but more of the emotion that's evoked when you create your own controllers and play the games," he says. "At the end of the day, you have to experience it... |
