SpaceX’s new passenger spacecraft suffers failure during engine test Posted: 20 Apr 2019 04:30 PM PDT On Saturday, a test version of SpaceX's new passenger spacecraft, the Crew Dragon, suffered from some kind of failure during an engine test at the company's landing site in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The accident resulted in large plumes of smoke rising from the company's facility on the Florida coast, according to Florida Today. NASA astronauts were supposed to take their first flight on the spacecraft in July. "Earlier today, SpaceX conducted a series of engine tests on a Crew Dragon test vehicle on our test stand at Landing Zone 1 in Cape Canaveral, Florida," a SpaceX spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge. "The initial tests completed successfully but the final test resulted in an anomaly on the test stand." The event is now... |
Paypal and GoFundMe banned a militia group that detained migrants at the US border Posted: 20 Apr 2019 02:07 PM PDT Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that a right-wing militia group, the United Constitutional Patriots, operating in New Mexico was detaining migrants at gunpoint before turning them over to US officials. Now, Paypal and GoFundMe have banned the group from their services, according to Buzzfeed News. The number of paramilitary groups has grown in the US over the last couple of years, and in that time, their members have been making trips to the US southern border, saying that they're there to support US Border Patrol agents. Following the recent reports, New Mexico State Attorney General released a statement on Thursday, saying that "these individuals should not attempt to exercise authority reserved for law enforcement,"... |

The CIA says that China’s security agencies provided funds for Huawei: report Posted: 20 Apr 2019 11:31 AM PDT Earlier this year, the Central Intelligence Agency informed its counterparts in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK that Chinese technology company Huawei has received funding from the Central National Security Commission of the Communist Party of China, the People's Liberation Army, and a "third branch of the Chinese state intelligence network," according to The Times. The paper cites an anonymous source in the UK that says that details were shared with "only the most senior UK officials," which that the CIA "awarded a strong but not cast-iron classification of certainty. Huawei has consistently denied claims that it has ties to the country's government, has said that it would "categorically refuse" any requests for data from... |
Internet time and doomsday asteroids: this week in tech, 20 years ago Posted: 20 Apr 2019 10:00 AM PDT It's difficult to remember a time when online media wasn't arranged largely around memetic cultural events. On any given April 20th in recent years, for instance, you can find all sorts of weed-themed stories pegged around the unofficial holiday for marijuana. That's not so in 1999: a search for "420" brings up precious few results. Instead, the science and technology news of late April included one big company shake-up, some odd developments in space, and an extremely doomed game studio founded by Michael Crichton. Here's this week in tech, 20 years ago. Compaq's CEO got kicked outCompaq was the biggest personal computer manufacturer in the world. But in April 1999, it was set to disappoint shareholders with terrible earnings. So,... |
That mental health app might share your data without telling you Posted: 20 Apr 2019 09:05 AM PDT Free apps marketed to people with depression or who want to quit smoking are hemorrhaging user data to third parties like Facebook and Google — but often don't admit it in their privacy policies, a new study reports. This study is the latest to highlight the potential risks of entrusting sensitive health information to our phones. Though most of the easily-found depression or smoking cessation apps in the Android and iOS stores share data, only a fraction of them actually disclose this. The findings add to a string of worrying revelations about what apps are doing with the health information we entrust to them. For instance, a Wall Street Journal investigation recently revealed the period tracking app Flo shared users' period dates and... |
11 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 20 Apr 2019 09:00 AM PDT I watched Guava Island last weekend, since I was really curious to see what this mystery project that Donald Glover, Rihanna, and Hiro Murai had put together was. As a person who watches nearly every single trailer in existence, it was nice for once going into a movie with almost no understanding of what I was about to get, since the film's teasers were just a couple of seconds long. The movie is somewhere between an extended music video and a film that just happens to involve musical set pieces. There's a very funny reprise of Murai and Glover's "This is America" video, a sweet sequence of Glover and Rihanna dancing on a pier, and some lovely moments in between that basically boil down to Glover being a super charming dude and a great... |

Tiamat’s Wrath raises the stakes as The Expanse nears the end Posted: 20 Apr 2019 07:00 AM PDT Over the course of eight books, The Expanse has felt a bit like one of those videos that zooms out from Earth into the larger universe. Part of the appeal of Leviathan Wakes and Caliban's War was that they were a space opera set in our local neighborhood, dealing with issues that are relevant to the world we now live in: war, racism, justice, all accompanied by power armored-marines, spaceship battles, and a menacing alien threat. But as the series progressed, authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (collectively known as James S.A. Corey) have, well, expanded their scope to more cosmic issues. Abaddon's Gate opened up the cosmos to humanity by way of an alien, ring-gate system; Cibola Burn introduced us to a brand-new planet; 2017's P... |
