Sri Lanka restricts access to social media sites following terror attack

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 11:18 AM PDT

A coordinated series of attacks against churches and hotels in Sri Lanka this morning has killed at least 200 people, and injured at least 450 more. In response to the attack, the Sri Lankan government has restricted access to a number of social media sites, including Facebook, Whatsapp, and Youtube, according to local media and monitoring site Netblocks (via The New York Times).

The site says that the government appears to have blocked Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Viber, and YouTube, and authorities have issued a curfew in the country. Presidential advisor Harindra Dassanayake told The New York Times that "this was a unilateral decision," and was done over concerns that the attacks would trigger additional waves of...

Game of Thrones Hope Chest: long odds and unlikely endings

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 10:00 AM PDT

Game of Thrones has never been about giving readers or viewers what they most want. Its author and screenwriters prefer to build fan expectations, then overturn them for narrative impact and, sometimes, pure shock value. Yet, fans maintain hope that at least a few of the characters will reach a satisfying, well-deserved ending. So it's time for the return of Game of Thrones Hope Chest, the weekly poll where we put all of our hopes together in one place. We aren't asking what you think is going to happen on Game of Thrones. We're asking: what do you most hope to see happen?

Last week, we looked at weird fan theories about what's going on in Westeros, and this week, we're focusing on an area of Game of Thrones exploitation that's almost as...

Samsung has reportedly postponed the Chinese launch of its forthcoming Galaxy Fold smartphone, according to SamMobile. The site cites people familiar with the situation that the official reason is due to an issue with the venue, but notes that other activities related to the launch have also been delayed or canceled.

Engadget Chinese editor in Chief Richard Lai also noted on Twitter that planned events in Hong Kong and Shanghai set to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday have been postponed. We've reached out to Samsung for comment, and will update this post if we hear back.

Stop what you’re doing, and gaze upon this PC made out of pasta

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Everybody loves pasta. It's a cheap source of calories, it's easy to cook, and it comes in lots of cute shapes like bow ties. It's so great that, perhaps a little unfairly, it's become a little pigeonholed as just being a food. Now, thanks to a new pasta-based PC build spotted by Motherboard, those days are finally coming to an end.

The build is courtesy of YouTuber Laplanet Arts, who embarked on the project after his wife joked about making a PC out of pasta… so that's exactly what he did. The machine is based on the hardware from an old Asus Transformer convertible tablet, which he stripped out of its old chassis and built into a new case made entirely out of lasagna and rigatoni.

Disappointingly,...

Life is Strange 2 creators explain why they won’t shy away from politics in games

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 08:00 AM PDT

The creators of Life is Strange aren't scared to touch on topics often taboo in games. While some developers have denied making political statements of any kind, French studio Dontnod has placed those questions front and center in its current project, Life is Strange 2.

Life is Strange 2 follows two brothers, Sean and Daniel, on the run after a tragic event. On top of juggling grief and newfound responsibilities, the pair also find themselves dealing with bigotry and worse. During a recent interview with The Verge, co-creator and co-game director Raoul Barbet and lead producer Luc Bagadhoust explained how their series took a turn from teen problems to a more politically charged stage.

"It's very hard now not to do something that's not...

A web art exhibit forces visitors to confront the past

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 07:00 AM PDT

Saved emails, Geocities pages, an emulation of Windows 98. These are all parts of the deleted web — the web that can't be easily accessed anymore. And they're all part of a museum exhibition called "The Art Happens Here: Net Art Anthology," currently showing at the New Museum.

The name of the exhibition, "The Art Happens Here," comes from a 1997 diagram by an artist duo named MTAA, depicting a lightning symbol in between two computers and an arrow pointing to it saying, "The art happens here." "They wanted to show people that the artwork wasn't something shown on a screen but it was more about an encounter they were having with other users," Rhizome's artistic director, Michael Connor tells The Verge, "There's no object. The whole idea...

The Game Boy’s 30th anniversary: a celebration in photos

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 06:00 AM PDT

When our editors started talking about doing a feature for the Game Boy's 30th anniversary, I instantly knew I wanted to do this photo series. I guess the nostalgia factor kicked in; it brought all the memories back that I'm sure many of you also share with this device.

I should mention that this whole meeting took place at a bar during one of those post-work drinks with the team. Minutes after drinks were served, all of us we were scouting eBay to find some of the old accessories: the link cable, Game Boy camera, external battery pack, and Game Genie all came from various places across the US and the world. Some, to our surprise, were never even opened or used.

The centerpiece, an original Game Boy itself, came from news editor Sean...

A new podcast player lets you see what your friends are listening to and recommending

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 06:00 AM PDT

A new podcast app is designed to solve the problem of discovering new shows. Co-founders Pete Curley and Garret Heaton (who previously founded and sold HipChat) launched Swoot this past week, and the big idea is to let listeners see what shows their friends follow, as well as the shows and episodes they recommend, all in the name of getting people to discover new content. When you search for podcasts, for example, you may see your friend's face pop up as a listener. Otherwise, it functions as any other podcast player does. The duo raised $3 million to bring the concept to life.

Podcasts have a discovery problem, Curley says, which is what most podcast executives will tell you. Spotify wants to solve for it. So does NPR and everyone else...

Tesla gets restraining order on short-seller who photographed employees

Posted: 20 Apr 2019 08:07 PM PDT

Tesla has hit one of its prominent Twitter critics and short-sellers of the company with a restraining order — the same person who recently spotted and photographed a Model 3 being filmed by Tesla ahead of a planned "autonomy investor day" on April 22nd. The company was granted the temporary restraining order by the Alameda County Superior Court in California on Friday, which was first spotted by PlainSite.org. It's not clear if the restraining order has been served.

Tesla claims California resident Randeep Hothi "stalked, harassed, and endangered" three of its employees who were driving the Model 3 on a Bay Area highway this past week. The company says Hothi "pursued these employees on the public highway for about 35 minutes, variously...
