AT&T’s 5G E marketing ploy is turning out to be a disaster Posted: 22 Apr 2019 05:09 PM PDT AT&T may have just amicably settled a false advertising lawsuit with Sprint over its "5G Evolution" branding, but the company's apparent marketing strategy here is proving to be a disaster. Rather than taking a victory lap for arriving at real 5G faster than its US competitors — AT&T's actual 5G network currently supports more cities than Verizon's — the company is still clinging to a meaningless, confusing logo it refuses to walk away from. While AT&T has stated plainly that 5G Evolution isn't actually 5G, in that it doesn't meet the technical or speed standards to be classified as such, the end goal seems to be tricking its own customers into thinking they're accessing a next-generation network through pure obfuscation. The end... |
Tesla’s new self-driving chip is here, and this is your best look yet Posted: 22 Apr 2019 04:08 PM PDT In late 2017, we learned that Tesla was attempting to build its very first computer chip for self-driving cars, and Elon Musk said in October 2018 that the silicon was a mere six months away. Now — in an unusual example of Elon Musk correctly predicting when a product will launch — Tesla has revealed that the chip is actually here on schedule. In fact, Musk says it's been shipping its new Full Self Driving Chip in the Tesla Model S and Model X for over a month now, and has been placing it in the Model 3 for ten days already. And today, at Tesla's Autonomy Investor Day in Palo Alto, California, the company gave the world its first, detailed glimpse at what Musk is now calling "the best chip in the world" — a 260 square millimeter piece of... |
A peek inside the Huawei P30 Pro’s periscope lens shows off its clever zoom Posted: 22 Apr 2019 03:40 PM PDT The Huawei P30 Pro offers unprecedented zoom capability for a smartphone camera thanks to a simple periscope — and now we're getting our first glimpse inside. As seen in a thorough teardown by YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, Huawei's 5x optical zoom camera module has been cracked open, proving that a telephoto lens and mirror really can fit inside an extremely thin phone. That helps it achieve better zoom than any smartphone we've seen to date. The periscope lens pictured above might not look very big, but to fit it inside of the phone, Huawei had to lay it sideways, as also revealed in an earlier teardown by iFixit. Traditionally, phone manufacturers position a sensor directly behind a lens, but there's often a tradeoff. Depending... |
Sprint and AT&T settle lawsuit over ‘blatantly misleading’ 5G E logo Posted: 22 Apr 2019 03:35 PM PDT AT&T and Sprint have settled a lawsuit over AT&T's "5G Evolution" branding, which Sprint claimed was fooling customers into believing its 4G LTE network was a full-fledged 5G network. "We have amicably settled this matter," an AT&T spokesperson told the Dallas Business Journal — which cited anonymous sources saying that AT&T would keep using "5G E" in its marketing material. AT&T and Sprint also confirmed its statement to The Verge. Earlier this year, AT&T started displaying a "5G E" logo on certain upgraded parts of its LTE network. The phones weren't actually connecting to 5G networks, and the move was roundly derided: T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint all criticized AT&T's new logo, with Sprint's CTO claiming it was "blatantly misleading... |
Here are Elon Musk’s wildest predictions about Tesla’s self-driving cars Posted: 22 Apr 2019 03:28 PM PDT Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a series of bold predictions today about the ability for his company's cars to completely drive themselves. And Musk thinks it will happen sooner than most of his competitors — perhaps as soon as the end of this year. Musk made the comments at an invitation-only event for investors at Tesla's Palo Alto-headquarters, laying out a near-future vision in which self-driving Teslas vehicles compete with the likes of Waymo, GM, and Uber. Here are some of the main takeaways from Tesla's "autonomy day" event:

Facebook’s new chief lawyer helped write the Patriot Act Posted: 22 Apr 2019 03:12 PM PDT Jennifer Newstead, a Trump appointee who served in the Justice Department under President Bush, will soon be taking over as general counsel of Facebook, the company announced in a press release Monday afternoon. Newstead will take over from Colin Stretch, who announced plans to retire last year. "Jennifer is a seasoned leader whose global perspective and experience will help us fulfill our mission," Sheryl Sandberg said in a statement included with the release. But many are already troubled by Newstead's history lobbying and legislating for more powerful electronic surveillance. As The Hill points out, a 2002 Justice Department press release describes her as "helping craft" the legislation. Notorious Bush administration lawyer John Yoo d... |
Elon Musk says Tesla will allow aggressive Autopilot mode with ‘slight chance of a fender bender’ Posted: 22 Apr 2019 02:14 PM PDT Elon Musk said at an event on Monday that Tesla will someday allow drivers to select aggressive modes of its Autopilot driver assistance system that have a "slight chance of a fender bender." Musk didn't say when Tesla might roll out that option, only that the company would have to have "higher confidence" in Autopilot's capabilities before allowing it to happen. "Do you want to have a nonzero chance of a fender bender on freeway traffic?" Musk asked at the event, which was for investors in the company. He dubbed it "LA traffic mode," because "unfortunately, [it's] the only way to navigate LA traffic." Tesla already allows its owners to select a "Mad Max" setting for Navigate on Autopilot, which is a feature that handles highway... |
Posted: 22 Apr 2019 01:25 PM PDT The Central Intelligence Agency will soon be launching an Instagram account, Director Gina Haspel said last week — and Instagram is helping them set it up. On Thursday, Director Haspel addressed a crowd at Auburn University in Alabama and mentioned that the CIA would soon have a presence on Instagram. The agency already has Facebook and Twitter accounts where they thirst for young talent with memes, and Instagram would be the intelligence agency's latest foray into social media.

Today’s Earth Day Google Doodle focuses on some of the planet’s record-breaking creatures Posted: 22 Apr 2019 12:52 PM PDT It's Earth Day, a day to appreciate the large chunk of rock that serves as our protective spaceship as it transports us through the Universe. Google is celebrating today by highlighting six strange creatures and organisms that also call this spaceship their home. Today's Google Doodle animation takes people on a journey from the top of Earth's atmosphere to our planet's deepest caves where all kinds of diverse plants and organisms reside. The cartoon highlights creatures such as the wandering albatross, which sports the widest wingspan of any bird alive, as well as the speckled coelacanth fish, a species that's been around for 407 million years. These six organisms don't even come close to representing the sheer variability of wildlife... |
Here’s how to watch Tesla’s self-driving event today Posted: 22 Apr 2019 11:16 AM PDT Tesla is about to hold an "Autonomy Investor Day" today at its headquarters in Palo Alto, California. The event was slated to start at 2PM ET (but is running a little late), and you can watch it above or at this link. The event comes two days before Tesla is due to report its financial performance for the first quarter of 2019, during which it is expected that the company will post a loss for the first time since the second quarter of 2018. The company has been pretty tight-lipped about what exactly it plans to show off at the event, though it's likely Tesla will offer some kind of update on its efforts to bring a "full self-driving" version of Autopilot into the world — a controversial and often confusing term that the company often... |
