This cool video reimagines Game of Thrones’ title sequence in the style of Westworld Posted: 28 Apr 2019 02:24 PM PDT HBO's final season of Game of Thrones is in the midst of its run, and a Belgian designer took the opportunity to reimagine the show's title sequence in the style of another of the network's big shows, Westworld "Westerosworld" does two cool things: it takes the look and stylings of Westworld's opening credits — minimalist white designs and figures being constructed with advanced 3D printers — and changes that over to things like dragons, the house flags, the Night King, and the Iron Throne, with a hint of color accenting them. The video also takes Game of Thrones' iconic theme song, and reimagines it in the same style, thanks to composer Brandon Chapman, who posted the track a year ago on Soundcloud, and which seems to have inspired the... |
Vimeo’s new feature will allow creators to create Smart TV channels Posted: 28 Apr 2019 01:00 PM PDT Vimeo announced (via TubeFilter) that it is releasing a new toolkit called Showcases that will allow creators to show off their videos, including customizable portfolio sites and Smart TV channels. The company describes Showcase as a new way for users to highlight their portfolio online, and brings three tools to the table: a customizable portfolio / video site, the ability to embed video playlists on existing websites that creators might have, and TV apps for Pro users, which will allow creators to build their own Smart TV channels, which can be distributed via Roku and Amazon Fire TVs. The feature will replace Vimeo's Album feature (it says that it'll update the design and keep "all the features that you love while adding new ones.")... |
PewDiePie calls for an end to the ‘Subscribe to PewDiePie’ meme after New Zealand shooting Posted: 28 Apr 2019 11:44 AM PDT In a video on Sunday, Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg finally addressed the mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand that left more than 50 people dead, and drew an uncomfortable association to the popular YouTuber. The New Zealand attacker live-streamed the shooting, and referenced the "Subscribe to PewDiePie" movement in the livestream. The meme is based on a battle between Kjellberg, YouTube's top individual creator with more than 95 million subscribers, and T-Series, a Bollywood studio in India, who were competing for the most subscribed to channel on YouTube. Kjellberg tweeted about the connection at the time, calling the attack disgusting, but never addressed it at length on his YouTube channel. Kjellberg later made several other... |
GM working on major upgrades to Super Cruise before kicking off 2020 rollout Posted: 28 Apr 2019 10:00 AM PDT You've probably heard of Autopilot, Tesla's buzz-worthy advanced driver assist system that combines adaptive cruise control, forward collision warnings, and lane-keep assistance. Less well-known is Super Cruise, the highly automated system developed by Cadillac that is really about as close to autonomous driving as anyone can get today. It's less well-known because, since its debut two years ago, Super Cruise has only been in one vehicle: the CT6 sedan. But that changed last week, when Cadillac unveiled its second vehicle with Super Cruise, the 2020 CT5 sedan, at the New York Auto Show. Two of the automaker's top engineers sat down with The Verge to discuss the upcoming rollout of Super Cruise across Cadillac's entire lineup. |
Avengers: Endgame earned an astonishing $1.2 billion in its opening weekend Posted: 28 Apr 2019 09:19 AM PDT Disney's latest blockbuster has smashed box office records, pulling in an astonishing $1.2 billion globally in its opening weekend, according to Variety. It's the eighth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to cross the billion-dollar mark, and it's the fastest any film has ever earned that much. The film topped The Force Awakens opening day record from 2015 with a $305 million global box office on Thursday (it pulled in $60 million in the US), and went on to earn around $300 million in the US over the course of the weekend. Disney's franchise films have steadily dominated the box offices in recent years. Star Wars: The Force Awakens set records in 2015 with a $517 million haul worldwide on its opening weekend, Black Panther drew in... |
Watch a debate over whether Pluto should get its planet status back Posted: 28 Apr 2019 09:00 AM PDT If you're someone who is still upset about Pluto's planetary demotion from more than a decade ago, then an upcoming debate about the definition of the word "planet" may be of interest to you. One of Pluto's biggest defenders, Alan Stern, will be debating Ron Ekers, who used to be the president of the International Astronomical Union — the global organization responsible for redefining the term "planet." It was ultimately the IAU's decision to designate Pluto and other small worlds like it as "dwarf planets," a title distinct from the term "planet." The change triggered a lot of angst and upheaval over the loss of Pluto's planet status. Perhaps the biggest critic of the new definition has been Stern, the principal investigator on NASA's... |
Comcast’s broadband customers are using more of their monthly data than ever before Posted: 28 Apr 2019 08:10 AM PDT Comcast has long said that a minority of its customers approach the limits of their 1TB data caps in their home internet plans, but that number is growing. In a recent call with investors (via Ars Technica) Comcast says that its median users are using 200GB of their 1TB data cap a month, thanks to streaming video. In the last couple of years, Comcast has rolled out data caps to customers — first limiting users to 300GB per month back in 2015, and raising that limit to 1TB a month in 2016. In the past, Comcast has said that "more than 99 percent of our customers do not come close to using a terabyte," with most using around "six percent" each month, and if they go over, they have to pay an additional charge — $10 per 50GB used. But that... |
Posted: 28 Apr 2019 08:00 AM PDT It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend. Normally I only cover one game at a time on Short Play, but after playing 20 Minute Metropolis and Islanders back to back, it's hard not to think of how they relate to each other. Both are puzzle games about building cities, with very different approaches to gameplay and style. Despite this, both feel like they have a similar outlook on humanity's exploitative relationship with nature. First, 20 Minute Metropolis is like a sped-up version of SimCity, where you try to build the best city you can in 20 minutes. Each building... |
Russian hackers were ‘in a position’ to alter Florida county voting records: Marco Rubio Posted: 28 Apr 2019 07:15 AM PDT Russian hackers were able to breach one Florida county's voting systems during the 2016 Presidential Election, Florida Senator Marco Rubio confirmed in an interview, noting that that hackers not only accessed the county's systems, but had the ability to change voter roll data, according to The New York Times. The Times' report details how hackers mimicked e-mails from VR systems, a company that sells electronic voting equipment to states. Some voting officials noticed something was off — it used British vocabulary and a Gmail account — but in at least one county, hackers were successful. Senator Rubio confirmed that hackers were able to gain access to a system, and that they were "in a position" to alter records. |
