Nintendo’s Labo VR kit will work with Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey Posted: 04 Apr 2019 06:22 PM PDT Nintendo has announced that two of its biggest Switch games will be updated to work with the cardboard Labo VR headset that's releasing next week. Super Mario Odyssey will get a bonus mode with new "mini-missions" designed for VR, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild appears to be playable in its entirety except for the cutscenes. It's not immediately clear how either of these modes will work in practice — the Labo kit doesn't have a head strap, so settling in for a multi-hour session of Breath of the Wild might prove challenging. But at the very least, these are probably going to drive a lot more interest in the VR kit than there was for previous Labo releases. The modes will arrive in free updates to each game on April 25th,... |
Google dissolves AI ethics board just one week after forming it Posted: 04 Apr 2019 05:17 PM PDT Google today disclosed that it has dissolved a short-lived, external advisory board designed to monitor its use of artificial intelligence, following a week of controversy regarding the company's selection of members. The decision, reported first today by Vox, is largely due to outcry over the board's inclusion of Heritage Foundation president Kay Coles James, a noted conservative figure who has openly espoused anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and, through the Heritage Foundation, fought efforts to extend rights to transgender individuals and to combat climate change. The advisory board, called the Advanced Technology External Advisory Council (ATEAC), included a number of prominent academics in fields ranging from AI and philosophy to psychology... |
Samsung says profit slid 60 percent year on year Posted: 04 Apr 2019 04:44 PM PDT Samsung Electronics' first-quarter operating profit slid around 60 percent year-on-year off revenue that declined by about 14 percent, according to preliminary guidance, further illustrating the company's struggle with falling chip prices. The company had already issued an unprecedented warning last week that its earnings would be lower than market expectations. Total sales are expected to come in at 52 trillion won ($45.7 billion), with operating profit of around 6.2 trillion won ($5.5 billion), according to a statement. Samsung provides these figures alone at the start of each quarter, issuing a more detailed breakdown later in the month. Last quarter Samsung said that the Galaxy S10 was expected to help "prop up" performance,... |
College students allegedly scammed Apple out of nearly $1M in iPhone replacements Posted: 04 Apr 2019 03:21 PM PDT Two Chinese engineering students in Oregon allegedly scammed Apple out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in iPhone replacements and are now facing criminal charges in federal court, as first reported by The Oregonian. Authorities allege the students pulled off a convoluted scheme in order to wring Apple of the cash by using counterfeit devices and exploiting Apple's return policy. Beginning in 2017, the two men allegedly smuggled thousands of counterfeit iPhones into the US from China and then sent them in for Apple to repair or replace, claiming the knockoffs wouldn't power on. In many cases, Apple did replace the counterfeit goods with real iPhones, which cost the company an estimated $895,800. |
Facebook’s ad delivery could be inherently discriminatory, researchers say Posted: 04 Apr 2019 02:24 PM PDT A new study says that Facebook's ad delivery algorithm discriminates based on race and gender, even when advertisers are trying to reach a broad audience. The research backs up a similar claim that the US Department of Housing and Urban Development made last week when it sued Facebook for breaking housing discrimination laws. It also expands the scope of an already potentially damning body of research about online advertising and bias, adding new fuel to the push for regulation. Numerous reports have looked at how advertisers can target ads to exclude certain groups, but this study examines how the ads are delivered once they're out of advertisers' hands. Even if an ad is targeted broadly, Facebook will serve it to the audiences most... |
Elon Musk ordered to work things out with the SEC over his tweets Posted: 04 Apr 2019 02:12 PM PDT Elon Musk sat stoically in a Manhattan courtroom Thursday, hands clasped in front of him, as a federal judge weighed whether to hold him in contempt of court. The proximate cause was a tweet Musk sent in February that the Securities and Exchange Commission argues violated the terms of their settlement. And when the judge ultimately punted on the decision, ordering his lawyers and the SEC to work out their differences and come back in two weeks with a resolution, he seemed relieved. "Take a breath," said US District Court Judge Alison Nathan. "Come back with your reasonableness pants on." As he was leaving the courtroom, I asked Musk what he thought about the judge's call to action. Nathan... |
Microsoft brings Spotify and useful widgets to its Xbox Game Bar on Windows 10 Posted: 04 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer admitted last year that the software maker had "a ton of work to do on Windows" for PC gamers. Microsoft is now starting to improve its Xbox integration on PC with the unveiling of a big overhaul for the Game Bar feature in Windows 10. Available for beta testers today, the updated Game Bar now includes widgets that look more like the overlays you'd find in Nvidia's GeForce Experience. These widgets include many of the features you'd normally find in the Game Bar, but there's also a host of new ones. Microsoft is integrating Spotify into this feature, allowing you to control song playback during games. There's also an audio widget for adjusting game volume and outputs, and a widget to monitor your CPU,... |
Gmail’s Smart Compose will now suggest email subjects based on what you’ve written Posted: 04 Apr 2019 01:48 PM PDT Google can now automatically suggest email subject lines for you through Gmail's Smart Compose feature. The new ability arrived on Gmail today, moving us slightly closer to a future where we just use bots to replace our more mundane communications. Smart Compose can already guess at the next part of your sentences based on your writing habits, offering suggestions when you're about to ask someone "to revisit this next week," or thanking them at the end of an email. It relies on machine learning to make its recommendations, which Google says "can cut down on the effort it takes for you to write emails and replies." After you type up the body of your email, Smart Compose may suggest a subject for the email based on its... |
Amazon reportedly working on Alexa earbuds to take on Apple’s AirPods Posted: 04 Apr 2019 01:24 PM PDT Amazon is working on a pair of earbuds with integrated Alexa support that would be designed to compete with other truly wireless headphones, including Apple's own AirPods, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Like AirPods or Samsung's Galaxy Buds, the Amazon earbuds are said to be truly wireless headphones that won't need clips or cables to stay in people's ears — but the big difference between those competitors and Amazon's offering is support for the company's Alexa digital assistant. Amazon is also said to be focusing on audio quality as a major differentiator compared to the competition. Users will be able to use Alexa for basically anything that they'd be able to on their phones, including playing... |
Verizon’s 5G network is blazing fast, but it barely exists Posted: 04 Apr 2019 01:13 PM PDT I've spent the past 18 hours in Chicago not feasting on hot dogs or deep-dish pizza, but kicking the tires on Verizon's just-launched 5G mobile network. Yesterday, the leading US carrier triumphantly announced the debut of 5G service in "select areas of Chicago and Minneapolis," and said that "for the first time ever, customers can access a commercial 5G network with the world's first commercially available 5G-enabled smartphone." Verizon welcoming customers onto its 5G network came a week earlier than initially planned. Verizon hasn't said why it abruptly moved things up, but carriers in South Korea also went live with 5G yesterday, so it's possible the company didn't want to get beat by its global peers. I know you want speed tests,... |
