Turns out Amazon buying Eero wasn’t the startup success story we thought

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 05:59 PM PDT

When Amazon bought mesh Wi-Fi router company Eero, our first reactions were of exhaustion, consternation and concern: why couldn't a tiny company with an excellent privacy-minded product be left to its own devices, instead of getting snapped up by the big data giant from Seattle?

Now, we know why. Mashable reports that Amazon paid just $97 million for Eero, far less money than the $148 million it reportedly raised as a startup. That's something you don't do unless your business is in trouble, and it means Amazon may have actually saved Eero from a different fate.

The Verge can confirm that $97 million number, by the way, as well as many of the others in Mashable's story — we've seen similar documents, and we believe they're the real...

‘Old Town Road’ proves TikTok can launch a hit song

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 03:25 PM PDT

Lil Nas X at TikTok headquarters.

Montero "Lil Nas X" Hill's parents were concerned when their son dropped out of college eight months ago to pursue a career in rap; as the country trap star told Time Magazine, his parents succinctly pointed out there are millions of rappers already crowding the scene. Hill didn't listen. He had to compete with up-and-coming rappers on streaming services like SoundCloud and Spotify, but Hill had a secret card up his sleeve — a meme and TikTok.

"I promoted the song as a meme for months until it caught on to TikTok and it became way bigger," Hill told Time. "I was pretty familiar with TikTok: I always thought its videos would be ironically hilarious. When I became a trending topic on there, it was a crazy moment for me. A lot of people...

Former Senate staffer admits to doxxing five senators on Wikipedia

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 02:21 PM PDT

The man who edited Wikipedia with several senators' private phone numbers and addresses has pleaded guilty to computer fraud and other offenses. Jackson Cosko, a former employee of Senator Maggie Hassan, was arrested last year on suspicion of doxxing five members of Congress. He's now admitted to breaking into Hassan's office after being fired, stealing data that included personal contact information, then posting that information online during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing.

Cosko worked as a computer system administrator for Hassan, but he was fired in May of 2018. According to a plea agreement, he retaliated by using a key from another employee (who was later fired) to break into his old workplace at...

What brain-bending magic tricks can teach us about the mind

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 02:21 PM PDT

Pick a card, any card, and you might feel that you're in control when you pull the queen of hearts from a magician's deck. But magicians have strategies that force their audience's choice — from packing the deck with identical cards, to fanning out the deck with just the right timing so that the choice becomes all but inevitable.

This illusion of free will is one of the many illusions and magic tricks that Gustav Kuhn, a magician turned psychology researcher at Goldsmiths, University London, describes in his new book Experiencing the Impossible: The Science of Magic. Published in March by The MIT Press, the book explores the ways in which magic tricks and illusions can teach us about our brains. Kuhn takes the reader into the...

Ecobee appears to be quietly making its first video camera

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 02:19 PM PDT

Maybe the company known for its smart thermostats isn't just a smart thermostat company. In newly leaked photos obtained by Dave Zatz of Zatz Not Funny, Ecobee appears to be working on its first indoor video camera. The photos of the camera show a prominent, conical stand and four lights that flash yellow or blue. The shape of it looks vaguely like a smart speaker.

The camera would actually be Ecobee's second new product outside of its smart thermostats. Its first was a light switch that can double up as an Alexa speaker, which it released last year. There's evidence that Ecobee could eventually expand into other smart home devices as well. In 2018, Amazon poured millions from its Alexa Fund into investing in Ecobee. It's possible, given...

5G is still just hype for AT&T and Verizon

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 02:19 PM PDT

AT&T and Verizon had big 5G-related announcements this week: AT&T published speed test results that seemingly validated its "5G E" LTE network as the fastest around, and Verizon launched its 5G network in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis. But both of these announcements underscore just how much of a mess 5G is right now. AT&T's results appear to be skewed in the company's favor, and Verizon's rollout seems slapdash, with poor coverage even in the areas that Verizon promised.

These are just the latest headaches for 5G, which has been marred by delayed rollouts, limited hardware tests, conflicting standards, political wrangling, and more. With telecom companies rushing to be first, odds are the mess of 5G will only get worse as the...

Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have signed on with Amazon Studios

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 02:01 PM PDT

Amazon Studios has announced that it has signed on Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and their company Kilter Films for an overall deal to create original series for Amazon Prime Video. The deal builds on an existing project the pair is developing for the studio called The Peripheral.

That project is based on William Gibson's novel by the same name, which is set between near-future rural America and a distant future in London after an apocalypse. Amazon began developing the project last year, with an eye toward picking it up with a straight-to-series order.

Nolan and Joy said in a statement that they "can't wait to dive in to make some batshit crazy television together," while Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke says the...

Hidden Google Play info on new ‘Pixel 3a’ phones suggests a ‘midyear’ release

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 01:50 PM PDT

We've been hearing for months about the pair of Google's new midrange Pixel 3 devices coming out this year, and now 9to5Google has unearthed even more information about the handsets that points, more than ever, to a summer release date. Thanks to the Google Play Console, the software that allows Android developers to manage apps submitted to the company's mobile marketplace, 9to5Google was able to pull out two new device profiles for codenamed "bonito" and "sargo" phones, widely assumed to be the new midrange Pixel 3 devices.

More telling is that these phones are listed as "midyear experiences," indicating that Google intends to launch them sometime soon, perhaps at its I/O developer conference in May. At a higher level, it indicates...

Fortnite is copying Apex Legends’ best feature with new ‘reboot van’ coming next week

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 01:48 PM PDT

Epic Games' Fortnite might be the industry-leading battle royale game, but the developer behind the game is still taking smart cues from competitors. Starting next week, Fortnite will introduce what Epic is calling "reboot vans," or places where players can bring their teammates back to life if they've been knocked out of a match for good. The feature is a direct copy of arguably the best feature of competing battle royale hit Apex Legends, which launched two months ago with so-called respawn beacons that let you revive your teammates.

The feature, which first leaked back in late February, is designed to alleviate what is perhaps the most frustrating element of battle royale games today, which is losing a teammate early on and having to...

The Creators Issue

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 12:15 PM PDT

On any given day, you might watch a YouTube video, laugh at a Facebook meme, upvote a Reddit submission, hear a SoundCloud banger, heart an Instagram post, read a webcomic, and consider backing some far-fetched but kind of brilliant Kickstarter project. This week, we're publishing new stories every day about the creators, their tools, and the platforms where they publish their work.

More than ever, the web is centered on platforms that thrive off of content submitted by individual creators. Whether they're making short films, absurdist memes, thoughtful podcasts, brilliant photos, quirky games, sharp blog posts, or just another daily vlog, it's their creations that shape our experience on the web. They're what keep us coming back, and...
