Unwell is a fantastic gothic horror podcast set in midwest America

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT

There are a ton of podcasts out there, but finding the right one can be difficult. In our new column Pod Hunters, we cover what we've been listening to that we can't stop thinking about.

HartLife's new podcast series Unwell is a good example horror storytelling. After her mother is injured, a woman named Lillian Harper moves in with her mother in the very small town of Mt. Absalom, Ohio to help her recover. When she arrives, she rediscovers the strangeness of small-town middle America. Lillian and her mother have been estranged for years, and when she returns to her mother's home — a boarding house that's been in her family for generations, she comes across a host of strange characters, as well as deep-seated conspiracies and ghosts.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor fooled by 3D printed fingerprint

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 12:00 PM PDT

In recent years, smartphone manufacturers have been implementing advanced features for users to secure their devices, using fingerprint readers, face mapping, and even sensors that map out the blood veins in the palm of your hand. But there are still ways to get around such measures, and one user found that he could fool the in-display fingerprint reader on his Samsung Galaxy S10 with a 3D print of his fingerprint.

In a post on Imgur, user darkshark outlined his project: he took a picture of his fingerprint on a wineglass, processed it in Photoshop, and made a model using 3ds Max that allowed him to extrude the lines in the picture into a 3D version. After a 13-minute print (and three attempts with some tweaks), he was able to print out...

Huawei’s security troubles are hardening into a fight between the US and China

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 09:30 AM PDT

For months, telecom companies across the world have been struggling with what to do with Huawei. The US has effectively locked the company out of American telecom networks, citing national security concerns — but as the rest of the world faces the same choice, not everyone is convinced Huawei is a threat. Most US experts see Huawei's exposure to the Chinese government as dangerous in itself, but as time has gone on, the national split is getting harder to ignore.

This week saw two more prominent figures taking sides, for reasons that seemed more political than technological. On Friday in Geneva, ITU chief Houlin Zhao spoke out publicly against the ban. "If you find anything wrong, then you can charge [Huawei] and accuse them," Zhao said....

Saturday Night Live dreamed up some Game of Thrones spinoffs

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 08:23 AM PDT

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington hosted last night's Saturday Night Live, and with the final season coming out in a week, there were plenty of references to the series. One funny sketch was a lineup of potential spinoffs for the series, including "Game of Thrones: Special Victims Unit."

With Game of Thrones coming to an end this season, HBO has already been hard at work figuring out what the future of that franchise might look like. At one point, George R.R. Martin revealed that HBO had five spinoff shows in development, and the network later ordered a pilot for one of them, which will set thousands of years before Game of Thrones.

With Harington hosting last night's episode, SNL made some spinoff suggestions of its own. He spent his...

This interactive case turns your modular synth setup into a light show

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 07:00 AM PDT

Los Angeles-based Strange Electronic has launched a Kickstarter for a new kind of Eurorack synth module that doesn't make or control any sound at all. Instead, it integrates full-spectrum LED lighting into a modular setup, and is meant to spice up live performances by adding a visual component.

Called Lightstorm, the product is actually comprised of two parts — the actual Eurorack module, which has multiple parameters for controlling light, and a frosted acrylic case with a power supply and built-in LEDs. The module can be bought separately if you want to hook it up to your own lighting rig, but the plug-and-play nature of using a case that can light up is incredibly appealing.

The module has ports for LED output on both the front and...

Photographs is a tragic short story collection in the form of a puzzle game

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 06:00 AM PDT

Designer Luca Redwood has a knack for turning puzzle games into something bigger. It started with 10000000, which combined match-3 and RPG elements into rapid-fire action, and it continued with You Must Build a Boat, which added dungeon-crawling adventure gameplay to the formula. But Redwood's latest game is also his most ambitious: with Photographs, he's out to prove a puzzle game can also tell a story.

The game is divided into five chapters, each of which tells a different story. They're all fairly short; as long as you don't get majorly stuck on any puzzles, you can finish each chapter in around 30 minutes. You start out following the story of an alchemist, an old man with an apothecary shop in the woods and a young granddaughter who...
