Blackpink is having a moment — and it will be livestreamed on Times Square’s largest screen

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 04:49 PM PDT

If you haven't heard Blackpink's "Kill This Love," you might want to stay away — it's an earworm that's been lodged in my brain all weekend. But you're not going to be able to dodge some basic knowledge of the latest musical sensation, because the four female members of this K-pop group are catapulting themselves into the history books over the span of a single week.

As Vox reports, they're the first all-female group to claim the No. 1 spot on the US iTunes chart in fifteen years — Destiny's Child did it last in 2004 — and just had the biggest music video debut on YouTube ever.

YouTube confirmed to The Verge that "Kill This Love" is the fastest music video ever to hit 100 million views, and — at 56.7 million views in its first 24 hours...

Rocket Lab is now building customizable satellites

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 04:00 PM PDT

<em>Rocket Lab's Photon (R), positioned next to the Electron upper stage (L)</em>

Small satellite launcher Rocket Lab is getting into the business of making satellites in addition to launching them. The company announced today that it is offering a new service to customers: a standard satellite that can be tailored to anyone's low Earth orbit business needs. Such satellites are designed to launch to orbit on Rocket Lab's Electron rocket, creating a streamlined mission to space.

Rocket Lab's offering is a circular satellite called the Photon. Capable of weighing up to 374 pounds (170 kilograms), it comes equipped with propulsion, GPS, and more. The satellite design is derived from Rocket Lab's kick stage — a cylindrical spacecraft that the company puts at the top of its rockets to give payloads an extra boost into...

Apple’s rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro might be delayed until next year at the earliest

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 03:09 PM PDT

Apple's rumored "all-new" 16-inch MacBook might not be coming out this year after all, according to a new research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo obtained by MacRumors that now predicts the updated laptops will arrive next year, at the earliest.

Kuo had previously broke the rumor that Apple was working on a refreshed MacBook Pro lineup, consisting of a larger model with a screen between 16 and 16.5 inches, and a 13-inch model that would offer higher specifications than Apple's current version (including up to 32GB of RAM). According to Kuo's original note, those laptops were planned to release later in 2019, but his latest update now pegs the release for either 2020 or 2021 (translations of Kuo's note currently disagree on the exact...

Razer’s Ripsaw HD capture card tries to challenge Elgato for entry-level game streaming

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 03:00 PM PDT

Razer is taking another shot at the streamer market with its updated Ripsaw HD capture card, which looks to challenge Elgato's own entry-level HD60 S with a lower price and 4K video passthrough.

Like the original Ripsaw, Razer's goal with the Ripsaw HD is to make setting up a stream as simple as possible for streamers. To that end, basically everything is still built right into the Ripsaw HD, including a microphone and headphone jack for audio mixing.

Setup is equally simple: just plug in your console or gaming PC on one end of the HDMI input, a monitor for playing the game to the HDMI output, and your streaming PC through a USB-C port for passing along data to send to your viewers. (The Ripsaw HD...

New Zealand privacy commissioner says Facebook is run by ‘morally bankrupt’ liars

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 03:00 PM PDT

New Zealand's Privacy Commissioner John Edwards took to Twitter on Sunday night to criticize Facebook for recklessly operating its platform and for contributing to the broadcasting of events like the Christchurch shooting, which was live-streamed on the social media platform. Edwards said, "Facebook cannot be trusted. They are morally bankrupt pathological liars who enable genocide, facilitate foreign undermining of democratic institutions."

Edwards tweeted that Facebook "allows the live-streaming of suicides, rapes, and murders, continue to host and publish the mosque attack video, allow advertisers to target 'Jew haters' and other hateful market segments, and refuse to accept any responsibility for any content or harm." The tweets have...

White House threatens to veto Democrat-led net neutrality bill

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 02:53 PM PDT

If the Democrats' net neutrality bill were to pass through Congress, it's likely that President Donald Trump would veto it, according to a new statement from the White House today.

It's not surprising that Trump is expected to veto the Democrat-led net neutrality initiative, but Monday's statement is one of the first direct comments from the White House on the legislation that is expected to easily pass through the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The Save the Internet Act, if approved, would restore the original net neutrality regulations that were put in place by the Obama-era Federal Communications Commission in 2015. The bill would essentially repeal the repeal of the rules that the Pai FCC approved in the first year of the...

The Google Home Hub is almost half off today

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 02:02 PM PDT

Google's Home Hub smart display usually costs $149, but Rakuten is where you'll be able to find it for far less. The Japanese e-commerce site is selling the Home Hub at a steep discount for $89.94, and with the offer code SAVE15 used at checkout, you can save an additional $13 and change. This brings the total down to $76.53 before tax.

This is the best deal that we've seen yet for the company's smart display. It's worth picking this up if you're thinking about buying into the Google Home ecosystem, or if you're adding onto the Google-made smart speakers that you already own.

Compared to other smart displays, like the Lenovo Smart Display, Facebook Portal, or Amazon's Echo Show, the Home Hub doesn't feature a camera. As such, it can't be...

Amazon’s Alexa can handle patient information now — what does that mean for privacy?

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 01:14 PM PDT

Last week, Amazon announced that Alexa-enabled devices are now able to handle patient information. It's an exciting update that could make aspects of health care more accessible, but questions remain around privacy and how Amazon will (or won't) be able to use the data it now has access to.

Typically, health care workers can only share a patient's health information with the patient and others in the health care system, according to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). That means that a business like Amazon, which is not explicitly a health care company, wouldn't be able to handle this data. Now, Amazon says that Alexa is able to follow HIPAA guidelines, and it has already invited six health companies...

Spyware app abused iOS enterprise certificate to track targets

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 12:59 PM PDT

Another app has abused the iOS enterprise certificate in order to bypass Apple's App Store rules, security researchers at Lookout announced on Monday. The app is called Assistenza SIM and it could steal a user's contacts, videos, photos, and real-time location data, as reported by TechCrunch. It could also tap people's phone calls remotely.

After researchers contacted Apple, the company revoked the app's enterprise certificate, making it impossible to install it on an iOS device. The enterprise certificate allowed the Assistenza app to bypass Apple certification and stay accessible for downloads through phishing sites outside the App Store.

An earlier version of the spyware app was discovered on Android last year. The Android version...

Fiat Chrysler will pay Tesla to dodge billions in emissions fines

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 12:24 PM PDT

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has struck a deal with Tesla to count the Silicon Valley automaker's cars as part of its fleet in the European Union, lowering FCA's average emissions output ahead of strict new EU regulations coming in 2021. Tesla will make "hundreds of millions of euros" from the sale of these emissions credits, according to the Financial Times.

The scheme resembles the way regulatory credits can be bought and sold in the United States, which has been a steady (if relatively small) business for Tesla for many years. The electric automaker made $103 million selling emissions credits in 2018, $280 million in 2017, and $215 million in 2016, according to a recent financial filing.

FCA, which owns brands like Jeep and...
