Google confirms its Pixelbook group has new laptops and tablets inbound Posted: 09 Apr 2019 05:46 PM PDT Last month, Business Insider reported that Google might be shifting employees out of the laptop and tablet division that brought us the premium, pricey Pixelbook and Pixel Slate, citing "roadmap cutbacks." But though Google originally declined to comment, the company now tells The Verge that its hardware division actually does have new laptops and tablets on the way. While Google wouldn't talk details or timing, it did drop a big hint earlier today — as 9to5Google reports, the company led a session at its Cloud Next 2019 conference dubbed "Introducing Google Hardware for Business," where it suggested that a new device might help on-the-go employees in ways that the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate couldn't quite accomplish. "We think there's... |
AT&T boasts about 5G service in 19 cities, but there’s still no phone that can use it Posted: 09 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT The state of 5G continues to be a mess, as big US telecoms race to one-up one another by being the first to deploy hobbled versions of the next-gen networking technology across the country. AT&T now boasts 19 cities with 5G service as of today, but there's once again a big caveat: there aren't any smartphones that can use it yet. Furthermore, AT&T's only available true 5G device, a mobile hotspot it provides, can't yet be purchased in stores. The only two 5G smartphones that will be made available to US customers so far this year are the Verizon-exclusive Samsung Galaxy S10, which doesn't even have a firm release date, and the Verizon- and Sprint-exclusive LG V50. (Samsung's Galaxy Fold is supposed to come in a 5G version as well, but... |

YouTube is planning its own interactive Choose Your Own Adventure-style content Posted: 09 Apr 2019 01:39 PM PDT YouTube is investing in new, interactive Choose Your Own Adventure-style series that will compete with programs like Netflix's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and You Vs. Wild. The projects will exist under a new unit dedicated to interactive programming and live specials, according to a YouTube spokesperson. The series being developed will primarily be driven by interactivity. The company will also integrate some product features into both its scripted and unscripted YouTube Originals. The company intends to announce the first of these projects soon, according to the spokesperson. YouTube has experimented with interactive advertising in the past. This next step marks its first foray into interactive narrative content, which would... |
Why didn’t Google realize that an anti-hate live stream would get overrun by hate speech? Posted: 09 Apr 2019 01:33 PM PDT Earlier today, Google counsel Alexandria Walden testified before Congress in a hearing titled "Hate Crimes and the Rise of White Nationalism." The House Judiciary Committee streamed the video live on Google's own YouTube platform, complete with a live chat feed. Anybody who's even passingly familiar with YouTube might have flagged this as a bad decision. Hateful, racist comments are notoriously common on the site, and, unsurprisingly, some of YouTube's worst users immediately descended on the chat with slurs and other attacks. Commenters insulted Jewish committee chair Jerry Nadler, calling him a "goblin," and some mocked Walden's fellow witness, Mohammad Abu-Salha, whose two daughters were killed in an alleged hate crime. They espoused... |
Sekiro’s difficulty debate results in incredible ‘you cheated not only the game’ meme Posted: 09 Apr 2019 12:27 PM PDT Perhaps you've seen the rousing debate around FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice percolating across the internet these past couple of weeks. Maybe you've even engaged in a few "git guds" yourself. But no chapter in the ongoing controversy over whether the video game requires an easy mode (or whether your relationship with it really says anything meaningful about you as a human being) has been quite as satisfying as the "you cheated not only the game, but yourself" meme. The phrase, part of an already-infamous copypasta, was said with seemingly earnest seriousness by a Twitter user late last week, in response to a PC Gamer article by journalist James Davenport detailing how he used a mod to cheat his way through the game's... |
Walmart is hiring more robots to replace human tasks like cleaning floors and scanning inventory Posted: 09 Apr 2019 12:13 PM PDT Walmart is hiring robots to replace human tasks that humans didn't "enjoy doing." In a bid to save on labor costs, it's betting on robots to clean floors, sort inventory, and replenish out-of-stock items in its stores, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. Walmart has several jobs in mind for the new robots. Robot floor cleaners are coming to 1,500 stores. (The company says that floor scrubbing was previously a task that could take a human worker two to three hours each day to complete.) Walmart is also adding 600 conveyor belts that can sort inventory automatically, and at least 300 bots that can check if shelves are running out of stock after Walmart initially began to test this technology in 2017. All of this is coming at the cost... |
Alienware 17 gaming laptop bundle includes a free G-Sync monitor Posted: 09 Apr 2019 11:45 AM PDT The best deal that we've seen today is on the 17.3-inch Alienware 17 R5 gaming laptop. It's currently $2,999 from Dell, but B&H Photo is selling it for $2,499. Additionally, buyers will get a 24.5-inch Alienware AW2518H G-Sync gaming monitor and an Alienware mechanical keyboard for free with purchase. Other retailers charge around $450 for this monitor by itself, so the savings are great here. The laptop features a 1440p G-Sync display with a 120Hz refresh rate, an 8th Gen Intel Core i9 processor, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, 256GB of solid-state storage and 1TB of slower hard drive storage, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. It's more than capable of running most games on their highest settings, and its fast-refreshing display will... |
