Real estate site Redfin has been testing a feature for buyers to bid for homes online Posted: 12 May 2019 12:36 PM PDT Real estate company Redfin has been testing a feature that will allow home buyers to place a bid on a property via the company's website, according to The New York Times. It's a move that is part of a trend within the real estate industry that could upend the traditional marketplace. The program looks to be a relaunch of a feature that the company debuted over a decade ago: Redfin Direct, which it touted as the "first online home-buying service" back in 2006. Then, the feature was an online series of forms that facilitated home-buying purchases online, but "it went nowhere," according to the Times. The new version recently launched in Boston, allowing buyers to submit a bid on a home. Sellers who accept an offer would then pay a 2...
Waze for iOS now lets you stream music from Pandora Posted: 12 May 2019 11:00 AM PDT Maybe you're not about the subscription music life and still get your tunes from Pandora's many streaming stations. If so, you can now play that music directly through Google's Waze navigation app on iPhone. Last year, Waze added an audio player feature with integration from Spotify, NPR One, TuneIn Radio, and other services. Pandora says both its free and premium tiers are now supported on both the Android and iOS versions of Waze. "Better yet, this integration goes both ways. Once you connect Pandora and Waze on your mobile device, you can also see the next step of your Waze navigation directly in the Pandora app," Pandora wrote in a blog post. This takes the form of a banner at the top of the Pandora app; the company notes it should...
Google’s Digital Wellbeing software might be slowing down Pixel phones Posted: 12 May 2019 10:08 AM PDT Google's Digital Wellbeing software is meant to be a helpful, transparent tool for monitoring your smartphone usage habits and striking a healthier balance between tech and life. But over the last couple weeks, a number of Pixel owners have come to the conclusion that it has the unwanted side effect of slowing down their device. There's a very active thread on Reddit right now that includes many reports of improved performance when Digital Wellbeing is switched off. Some say the "night and day" difference is apparent almost immediately. Others seem less convinced that it's anywhere near that drastic. The theory was originally brought up just over a week ago by Reddit user Trueray17, who said it fully resolved performance issues with...
Last Day of Spring is about ways to be a supportive friend and LGBTQ ally Posted: 12 May 2019 08:00 AM PDT It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play, we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend. Last Day of Spring is a sequel to one of my favorite games from last year, One Night, Hot Spring. The original visual novel followed a 19-year-old transgender woman named Haru as she goes on an overnight hot spring trip for her oldest friend Manami's 20th birthday. It deals with a lot of Haru's experiences about not being treated or seen as the woman she is and the anxieties those experiences create. While parts of the story can get heavy, things generally turn out well for Haru. One of the reasons for that is Erika,...
Elon Musk shows off SpaceX’s 60 internet-beaming satellites packed together for launch Posted: 12 May 2019 07:00 AM PDT On Saturday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed the 60 satellites his company will be launching this week — the first batch of thousands of satellites that SpaceX hopes to deploy in the years ahead to provide global internet coverage from space. Musk tweeted a picture of the satellites packed tight together inside the nosecone of the Falcon 9 rocket that will take the spacecraft to orbit. The satellites are the first operational units of SpaceX's Starlink initiative, a planned mega-constellation of nearly 12,000 spacecraft that will sit in a low orbit above Earth and beam internet connectivity to the surface below. The Federal Communications Commission has granted SpaceX permission to launch two groups of satellites for the Starlink project: o...
NASA would like you to record memories of the first Moon landing Posted: 12 May 2019 06:00 AM PDT If you remember where you were when astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon's surface for the first time — or you know someone whose memory stretches back to the summer of '69 — NASA needs your help. The space agency is getting ready for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 on July 20th, and as part of its preparations, it's asking the public to record their memories of that historical moment. NASA plans to use some of the recordings on its social media accounts and as part of a planned "audio series" relating to Moon exploration and the Apollo missions. Oral histories of the event from people who were directly involved in the mission already exist. And NASA has a huge archive of interviews with people who participated in its...
