NASA’s initiative to put a woman on the Moon is named Artemis, after Apollo’s twin sister Posted: 13 May 2019 05:38 PM PDT NASA's ambitious plan to put the first woman on the surface of the Moon by 2024 is now named Artemis, after the Greek goddess of the Moon and twin sister of the god Apollo. NASA's Apollo program famously put the first men on the surface of the Moon in the 1960 and 70s, but now that NASA is focusing on putting a woman on the Moon, the goddess gets the top billing. "I think it is very beautiful that 50 years after Apollo, the Artemis program will carry the next man and the first woman to the Moon," NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine. "I have a daughter who is 11 years old, and I want her to be able to see herself in the same role as the next women that go to the Moon." Bridenstine announced the new name on Monday, May 13th, after NASA...
A Plague Tale is a dark, grisly game about kids surviving impossible odds Posted: 13 May 2019 04:00 PM PDT Early on in A Plague Tale: Innocence, you're controlling a young girl, holding hands with her scared little brother, while running down a city street full of people trying to kill them both. It might be the most stressful experience I've ever had in a video game. It's also the norm in the game, which is about two siblings trying to survive absolutely horrible circumstances. Unlike most video games, in A Plague Tale, you rarely have moments when you feel powerful. It's a struggle, especially when it seems like everything you encounter — whether it's scared adults or swarms of diseased rats — is out to get you. Its grisly nature can make it a challenge to play through, but it's also one of the most arresting games I've experienced in some...
Lenovo shows off the world’s first foldable PC Posted: 13 May 2019 03:30 PM PDT Folding phones are already being pitched as the next big wave of tech, and whether or not that turns out to be true, the industry has no plans to stop there. Lenovo has just announced what it says is the world's first foldable PC: a prototype ThinkPad that iterates the foldable tech we've already seen from phones on a much bigger scale. It's not just a cool tech demo, either: Lenovo has been developing this for over three years and has plans to launch a finished device in 2020 as part of its premium ThinkPad X1 brand. The goal here is a premium product that will be a laptop-class device, not an accessory or secondary computer like a tablet might be. Cool factor aside, though, why build a folding PC? The answer is largely...
White House wants $1.6 billion extra for NASA to accelerate astronaut return to the Moon Posted: 13 May 2019 02:53 PM PDT NASA and the White House will ask Congress for an extra $1.6 billion in next year's budget to accelerate human missions to the Moon and return people to the lunar surface by 2024. The space agency is requesting these funds in addition to the $21 billion budget that the president already requested for NASA. The funding proposal is laid out in a new budget amendment that NASA officials have been crafting for the last two months, along with input from the White House. The additional funds are meant to help NASA meet Pence's challenge of sending astronauts back to the Moon within the next five years. During a speech at a meeting of the National Space Council in March, Pence said that NASA's original goal of sending humans to the Moon by 2028...
The Xbox One S with a disc drive costs $50 less than the disc-less model Posted: 13 May 2019 01:38 PM PDT The Xbox One S with 1TB of internal storage (and a disc drive) currently costs $207.80 at Walmart. This is far less than its usual $299 price, and it's almost $50 cheaper than Microsoft's new Xbox One S All-Digital model that omits a Blu-ray disc drive. For context, this price is just a handful of dollars shy of the best price seen during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It doesn't come with a game, though the Xbox Game Pass is a decent alternative if you just want to try a bunch of games on-demand without paying a lot. Game Pass is currently $1 for a three-month subscription, and it lets you download and play games like Monster Hunter: World, Forza Horizon 4, Rocket League, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and many more. Game Pass makes a...
Apple’s new TV app is still terrible for actually watching TV on iPhones Posted: 13 May 2019 01:13 PM PDT Apple just released its updated Apple TV app today across iOS and tvOS — it's a big deal for the company, laying the crucial groundwork for the company's new TV strategy with direct-to-consumer subscriptions and Apple's own upcoming Apple TV Plus video streaming service. So why does it still default to portrait mode for playing back video? There's simply no way around it — actually watching video using Apple's native TV app is just an appalling user experience. Here's how it works: if you're watching a video on the TV app — presumably, one that you bought or rented on iTunes, streamed through one of Apple's native partner channels, like HBO or Showtime, or whatever the method for using Apple TV Plus will be — on an iOS device, it will...
Apple Pay will let you rent a Bird scooter without downloading the app Posted: 13 May 2019 01:07 PM PDT Apple and Bird are working together to make the process of renting a dockless electric scooter even easier. Soon, anyone with an iPhone can use Apple Pay's NFC tag to unlock and rent a Bird scooter, completely bypassing the e-scooter company's app. The news was first mentioned by Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president for internet services, in her keynote at the 2019 Transact conference in Las Vegas, which is geared toward people in the payment industry. In addition to Bird, Bailey also said that Apple was working with a parking meter payment company called PayByRide and Walmart's e-commerce subsidiary Bonobos. Finding and renting a Bird scooter today isn't particularly...
Apple chargers are getting hit by Trump’s trade war Posted: 13 May 2019 12:43 PM PDT On Friday, the US raised import taxes to 25 percent on billions of dollars' worth of Chinese goods, marking the latest escalation in a growing trade war that has raged on for more than a year. When the tariffs were initially announced, many saw them as a negotiating tactic, designed to put pressure on the ongoing trade talks between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. But with Trump now in Washington and cheerleading the new taxes on Twitter, it seems clear that the 25 percent tax will be around for a while. China has already retaliated with additional tariffs on $60 billion worth of US imports to China, including chemicals and frozen produce, raising the real danger of further escalation from the US.
How to stop Google from keeping your voice recordings Posted: 13 May 2019 12:38 PM PDT Home assistants such as Alexa and Google Assistant are becoming ubiquitous, and as that happens, more and more users are discovering how much of their data is actually being collected by these handy items. The Washington Post's Geoffrey A. Fowler was so taken aback by the amount of audio material that Amazon collected that he actually made a song out of his clips. If all this makes you uneasy, you can delete the recordings already made by Alexa and Google Assistant — but of the two, only Google Assistant lets you pause the process so that your voice won't be recorded in the first place. Here's how to do it. Note: These steps assume you are using a web browser. If you want to do it on a mobile device, you still need to do it via the...
