Facebook imposes restrictions on live-streaming to prevent future abuse

Posted: 14 May 2019 08:00 PM PDT

On Tuesday, Facebook announced that it would start restricting who can live stream video on the platform following the white nationalist terrorist attacks in New Zealand only a few months ago.

According to the blog post, Facebook said that it would be applying what it called a "one strike" policy to Facebook Live that would ban users who violate the platform's community standards once from using the live-streaming service for set periods of time. This applies to content posted elsewhere on the website, not just streamed on Facebook Live. If a user were to post a harmful link on their profile, like content which leads to a terrorist website, they would be banned from live-streaming as well.

Stranger Things’ amazing Lego set takes the Upside Down literally

Posted: 14 May 2019 05:06 PM PDT

It's so perfect a concept I have a hard time believing it actually exists and will soon be on sale: a Stranger Things LEGO set where The Upside Down is treated just as literally as in the hit Netflix show.

There, it's a dark, evil, bizarro world that's literally just beneath the surface of reality, perhaps deep in the roots of a tree or on the other side of that wall. Here, it's a Lego set that can literally be flipped upside down to expose the evil version of the Byers' iconic house where many key moments in the show's first season played out.

The $200, 2,287-piece set is called 'The Upside Down," naturally, and like most Lego sets it's not remotely a 1:1 recreation of the environments from the show, even at minifig scale; like Lego's...

Uber is now offering a ‘quiet mode’ option for its luxury service

Posted: 14 May 2019 05:00 PM PDT

Uber is rolling out a series of new features for its higher-priced luxury car service, Uber Black, including a "quiet car" mode for riders who want to discourage chatty drivers. It's the first upgrade to the ride-hail giant's premium service to take place in several years.

In addition to a quiet mode, Uber riders can also use the app to request help with their luggage or to communicate their preferred temperature to the driver. They can also ask for extra time before getting into the car without incurring late pickup fees, and will able to speak directly to a customer service rep if something goes wrong. Riders can also select "no preference" to any of these options.

Normally, most of these requests could be handled...

Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones continue to dominate culture with MTV nominations

Posted: 14 May 2019 02:59 PM PDT

In the opinion of Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, and blogs around the world, there are only two pieces of pop culture that matter this year so far: Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones. Newly announced nominations for MTV's Movie and TV Awards confirm those beliefs.

Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones racked up top nominations for this year's awards ceremony. Endgame picked up several nominations for Best Movie, Best Hero (Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron-Man), Best Villain (Josh Brolin as Thanos), and Best Fight (Captain America vs. Thanos). Game of Thrones also picked up four nominations, including Best TV Show, Best Performance in a Show (Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen), Best Hero (Maisie Williams as Arya Stark), and Best Fight (Arya...

San Francisco becomes first US city to ban facial recognition by government agencies

Posted: 14 May 2019 02:57 PM PDT

In a first for a city in the United States, San Francisco has voted to ban its government agencies from using facial recognition technology.

The city's Board of Supervisors voted eight to one to approve the proposal, set to take effect in a month, that would bar city agencies, including law enforcement, from using the tool. The ordinance would also require city agencies to get board approval for their use of surveillance technology, and set up audits of surveillance tech already in use. Other cities have approved similar transparency measures.

The plan, called the Stop Secret Surveillance Ordinance, was spearheaded by Supervisor Aaron Peskin. In a statement read ahead of the vote, Peskin said it...

You can now use Apple Pay for iTunes, App Store, Apple Music, and more

Posted: 14 May 2019 02:43 PM PDT

Apple has added Apple Pay as a payment method for a variety of purchases, including the App Store, iTunes Store, Apple Music, Apple Books, or to buy iCloud storage. The changes are reflected in an updated support document first spotted by MacRumors.

The new payment option is launching right on time ahead of the Apple Card, which is slated to arrive this summer. Users can get 2 percent cash back on purchases made with Apple Pay, and 3 percent cash back for Apple products, which includes the digital services mentioned above. Apple Pay also has a few more benefits, like the ability to add multiple credit and debit cards, and an easier way for users to manage their Apple Music and iCloud storage subscriptions from the Wallet app.

Anker’s latest dongle lets you use Lightning earbuds with USB-C devices

Posted: 14 May 2019 02:41 PM PDT

It truly feels like we're starting to reach peak dongle: Anker has released an adapter that allows Lightning earbuds to work with the 2018 iPad Pro, Apple's USB-C MacBooks, and some recent Windows 10 laptops. This $29.99 accessory is available from Amazon now and is certified under the iPhone maker's MFi program.

If your Lightning earbuds have an in-line microphone and track controls, Anker says that both should still work when running through the adapter. The USB-C to Lightning adapter promises full lossless (48KHz / 24-bit) audio transmission, which is important since there are quite a few audiophile-grade, hi-fi Lightning headphones on the market.

ZombieLoad attack lets hackers steal data from Intel chips

Posted: 14 May 2019 02:11 PM PDT

A newly discovered security flaw in Intel processors allows attackers to steal any data that's been recently accessed by the processor. That even holds true on cloud servers, which could allow an attacker to steal information from other virtual machines running on the same PC.

It's not known whether the attack, dubbed ZombieLoad, has been used by malicious hackers. The flaw was discovered by researchers from Graz University of Technology and was disclosed to Intel. Intel has issued code to patch the flaw, though it has to be implemented by individual manufacturers and then installed by users before everyone is protected.

The flaw affects almost every Intel chip since 2011, according to TechCrunch. Wired r...

Where will The Office, Friends, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Supernatural be in five years?

Posted: 14 May 2019 01:20 PM PDT

Disney is set to take full control of Hulu, which means many beloved NBC shows currently streaming on the platform will disappear by 2024. Between that and AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson confirming that some of WarnerMedia's most popular series would leave Netflix to land exclusively on the company's upcoming streaming service, the future of streaming is about to change.

Or to put it simply, the streaming world that most cord-cutting consumers have grown to know over the last few years is coming to an end.

Licensing details have become excruciatingly complicated. The reason for this is because some studios don't own the distribution rights to their shows that have wound up on independent streaming services. For example, Friends was an NBC...
