Watch SpaceX launch the first 60 satellites of its massive Starlink internet constellation

Posted: 15 May 2019 05:44 PM PDT

Tonight, SpaceX will attempt to jumpstart its ambitious internet-from-space initiative known as Starlink, by launching the first 60 production satellites of nearly 12,000 planned spacecraft into a low orbit above Earth. These inaugural probes do not have all of the capabilities that the finalized satellites are supposed to have, but their launch will get the ball rolling on Starlink — and should help SpaceX learn what it takes to operate a large crop of vehicles in space.

"This was one of the hardest engineer projects I've ever seen done, and it's been executed really well," SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said during a conference call.

Starlink is one of SpaceX's most formidable projects. SpaceX envisions putting up two groups of satellites into...

Valve’s Steam Link app is finally available for iOS and Apple TV

Posted: 15 May 2019 05:34 PM PDT

Valve's Steam Link app is now available on iOS devices and the Apple TV, almost a year after Apple initially rejected it for "business conflicts." Steam Link allows you to beam your existing library of PC games to other devices on the same network; the app is Valve's replacement for a now-discontinued streaming box that carried the same name.

The news comes days after the Supreme Court ruled that Apple must face an antitrust lawsuit related to alleged monopolistic practices around the App Store. It's notable, however, that the new iOS Steam Link app doesn't allow users to purchase games from the Steam store, unlike on Android.

Banning an app that streamed games that had already been purchased on another platform seemed hard to justify...

What does it cost to compete with Disney and Netflix? Quibi bets $2 billion

Posted: 15 May 2019 04:41 PM PDT

If you've never heard of Quibi, the mobile short-form video platform started by former HP CEO Meg Whitman and Hollywood heavyweight Jeffrey Katzenberg, you're likely not alone.

The service hasn't even launched yet, and it's not supposed to for another year. But Quibi, which is named after the phrase "quick bite" for the types of easily digestible video content it aims to produce, plans to raise an additional $1 billion, on top of the $1 billion it already has, to get its service properly funded to get off the ground, according to a report this The Information.

The eye-popping figure is, on the surface, a bit silly for a service that hasn't launched yet and doesn't sport a brand name that rolls off the tongue quite as nicely as Netflix...

Kickstarter will not voluntarily recognize its employee union

Posted: 15 May 2019 04:27 PM PDT

Kickstarter CEO Aziz Hasan and management will not voluntarily recognize Kickstarter United, its nascent employee union. (The staff is organizing with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 153.) Instead, the company wants a National Labor Relations Board election.

In an email to the entire staff, Hasan expressed concern that a union would hurt the company. Kickstarter has faced a number of challenges, Hasan writes. "I recognize the need for better communication, definition around roles and responsibilities, clarity around compensation, and processes that allow for perspectives to be shared and captured across the organization." The company also suffers from what Hasan characterizes as "a lack of trust...

Snapchat has become a content creation tool for Instagram and Twitter users

Posted: 15 May 2019 03:35 PM PDT

Miley Cyrus' selfie that was taken using Snapchat's filter.

It's arguable that Snapchat stopped being culturally relevant when Kylie Jenner declared it dead and Rihanna disavowed it. This past weekend, however, it seemed like everyone was re-downloading, reopening, or trying out Snapchat for the first time in years. The cause was two new Snapchat filters, which allow users to look at gender swapped versions of themselves by adding traditional masculine features (beards and short hair) or normative female features (makeup, long hair, and a softer complexion).

The filters quickly spread everywhere outside of Snapchat. Modified selfies appeared all over Twitter, Instagram Stories, and even Facebook. It became immediately clear that participating in the fun online trend this weekend meant downloading...

Super Mario Maker 2 will have co-op play and a huge amount of new features

Posted: 15 May 2019 03:30 PM PDT

Super Mario Maker 2 is looking like a substantial upgrade over the original build-your-Mario-game. Today during a Nintendo Direct video, Nintendo detailed a huge number of features coming to the Switch game, chief among them co-op play, so that you can build and design levels with another player on the same console. You'll also be able to play through created levels online with up to four other people.

That's far from the only addition, however. The game will also include a range of new themes, including desert, winter, and forest; a brand new nighttime option that changes how certain aspects work; additional characters including Red Yoshi and Angry Sun; slopes, on/off switches, and custom scrolling for levels; a single-player story...

Investigators confirm that PG&E power lines started the deadly Camp Fire

Posted: 15 May 2019 03:16 PM PDT

Fire authorities have officially determined that Pacific Gas and Electric Co. was responsible for last year's deadly Camp Fire in Paradise, California. In a press release earlier today, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said that "after a very meticulous and thorough investigation, Cal Fire has determined that the Camp Fire was caused by electrical transmission lines owned and operated by Pacific Gas and Electricity (PG&E) located in the Pulga area."

The Camp Fire started the morning of November 8th. Cal Fire identified two ignition points, both of which were sparked by PG&E power lines. As Cal Fire notes, the fires then spread with the help of warm temperatures, dry vegetation, and strong winds. The...

In a new music video, Earth’s climate is baroque

Posted: 15 May 2019 02:53 PM PDT

Climate change is a pressing issue, but it can often feel distant and abstract. To make it resonate in people's minds, one scientist turned dry data points into achingly beautiful music, making the frightening changes to our planet audible.

The short piece, In Nomine Terra Calens, translates to "In the Name of a Warming Earth." It's by seismologist Lucy Jones, who turned temperature data from 1880 to the present into music to illustrate the speed at which the world is warming.

Jones spent decades of her professional life studying earthquakes with the United States Geological Survey, but she's also a gifted musician. Jones plays a stringed instrument called the viol, and has spent years working on a project that combined her passion for...

White House cracks down on Huawei equipment sales with executive order

Posted: 15 May 2019 02:24 PM PDT

After months of speculation, President Trump has signed an executive order giving the federal government the power to block US companies from buying foreign-made telecommunications equipment deemed a national security risk.

Under the order, which gives the secretary of commerce power to determine which transactions may be potential risks, no single company is immediately marked as a threat. But the plan is largely seen as a move against China-based Huawei, which some US lawmakers have deemed a security threat.

The US argues that China's government could force companies like Huawei to install backdoors in their equipment to spy on American networks. Huawei has repeatedly denied...
