Detective Pikachu review — an absurdly silly, wonderful ride Posted: 02 May 2019 06:30 PM PDT As a piece of storytelling, the live-action Pokémon movie Detective Pikachu fails spectacularly. Warner Bros. has the impossible task of trying to make the film appealing and likable for a movie-going audience that extends beyond nostalgic adults reminiscing over their trading cards, and kids caught up in their current Pokémon obsession. Detective Pikachu can't ever hope to achieve what The Pokémon Movie, a 1999 animated classic that saw children drag their less-than-enthused parents into theaters around the country, did for fans of the game. The Pokemon Movie was a rare jewel that found emotional depth in a superficial topic. Detective Pikachu, on the other hand, is an attempt to be more than a video game adaptation that pays homage to... |
Peter Mayhew, the actor who brought Chewbacca to life, has died Posted: 02 May 2019 04:10 PM PDT Peter Mayhew, the actor behind the iconic alien Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise, died earlier this week, according to a statement from his family posted to Twitter. He was 74 years old. Mayhew died on April 30th at his home in Texas. His family writes that "the Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in a film," and that "for more than 30 years Peter traveled all over the world spending time with his fans and friends."

Sonic’s live-action design upset the entire internet, so the studio is changing it Posted: 02 May 2019 03:34 PM PDT Most people recoiled at the sight of a disturbing, lanky CGI version of Sonic the Hedgehog when Paramount released its first trailer for the upcoming live-action film — and the studio has listened. Director Jeff Fowler tweeted today about the backlash, assuring distressed fans everywhere that the criticism was heard loud and clear. Fowler confirmed that changes were coming to the design of Sonic's character. "You aren't happy with the design & you want changes," Fowler tweeted. "It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be."

Microsoft unveils HoloLens 2 developer edition for $3,500 Posted: 02 May 2019 02:00 PM PDT Microsoft is launching a developer edition of the company's HoloLens 2 headset today. Priced at $3,500, it's the exact same pricing as the version that will be sold to businesses later this year. While the original commercial pricing of the HoloLens was $5,000, the original development kit was always $3,500, so there are no price cuts for developers this time around. The kit will include the HoloLens 2 hardware and Azure credits alongside free trials of Unity Pro and Unity PiXYZ Plugin for CAD data. Microsoft is also revealing that Unreal Engine 4 support for HoloLens 2 will be available for developers to start using by the end of May. This is a key addition for developers, and it will allow apps that include photo-realistic renders for... |
SpaceX still doesn’t know why its spacecraft exploded last month Posted: 02 May 2019 01:55 PM PDT Investigators are still trying to pin down exactly why a SpaceX vehicle exploded during testing on April 20th. A SpaceX official confirmed today that the explosion destroyed the test version of the company's passenger vehicle known as Crew Dragon. The company launched an investigation into the incident soon after it happened, and it's still combing through evidence from the accident. The safety and performance of the Crew Dragon are of particular concern for NASA as well as SpaceX. NASA commissioned SpaceX to build the vehicle as part of its Commercial Crew program, which aims to reduce the space agency's reliance on the Russian Soyuz rocket. Currently, the Soyuz is the only vehicle... |
Activision reveals the first five teams for its city-based Call of Duty league Posted: 02 May 2019 01:47 PM PDT Following the early success of the Overwatch League, Activision is planning to launch a similar, city-based professional league for Call of Duty as well, and today the publisher announced the league's first teams. The company says that it has already sold franchises to owners in Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Paris, and Toronto. Each team will be owned and operated by the same ownership groups behind their city's respective Overwatch League team. "In Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Paris, and Toronto, we are partnering with existing Overwatch League team owners who have first-hand experience of our e-sports strategy and capabilities and recognize the scale of the opportunity for a global Call of Duty league," Activision said in an earnings... |
Everything coming to Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Now in May Posted: 02 May 2019 01:42 PM PDT May is as good a month as any to dive into new fandoms. If you're not already caught up with Game of Thrones, it's still possible to block out the spoilers and binge all eight seasons before the finale airs on May 19th. Not only is HBO pulling out all the stops in what should be an epic battle, it's also giving fans one last farewell in Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, which airs on May 26th. But there's more to life than Game of Thrones. For people who've spent years avoiding it — or have watched it all and are looking for something new on HBO — May sees the premiere of Chernobyl, a five-part dramatization of the 1986 nuclear accident. Based on first-person accounts, government reports and books, and interviews, Chernobyl promises to be... |
Casetify reveals adorable pokémon phone cases in time for Detective Pikachu Posted: 02 May 2019 12:45 PM PDT Pokémon trainers have ditched their bulky pokédexes for smartphones that are capable of handling their pocket monster data. That makes finding a good phone case crucial, even if that means searching far and wide to find one capable of protecting the power that's inside. Casetify, a popular phone case designer, is introducing a new line of pokémon-themed cases ahead of Detective Pikachu's release. Many of the phone cases, which are available for various iPhone models and other non-Apple devices, feature a specific pokémon set against the company's logo. There are cases with Bulbasaur, Mew, Charmander, Eevee, Snorlax, and, of course, Pikachu. There's even a case that features a collage of good pokémon pals for the indecisive trainers who... |
OnePlus 7 Pro leaks show off the bezel-less ‘breakthrough’ display Posted: 02 May 2019 12:30 PM PDT OnePlus is expected to announce its next flagship phone, the OnePlus 7, along with a souped-up OnePlus 7 Pro model, in a few days on May 14th. So of course, it'll be of no surprise to anyone that pictures of the premium OnePlus 7 Pro have made their way to the internet ahead of schedule, thanks to WinFuture. And honestly, there's not a whole lot to see here — from the pictures, the OnePlus 7 Pro just looks a whole lot like the already leaked OnePlus 7. That's a good thing, mind you, given that the OnePlus 7 (and its bezel-free display thanks to a sliding camera) looks pretty great in those leaks. The more interesting part of the OnePlus 7 Pro is allegedly in the form of its display, which will feature what OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has... |
Epic’s Rocket League acquisition made a messy situation even messier Posted: 02 May 2019 12:24 PM PDT Epic Games' acquisition of Rocket League developer Psyonix should have been a game industry success story for the ages. Psyonix was a small, mostly contract studio that created a blockbuster online game that became an overnight success and now, a few years later, it gets scooped up by the cash-flush creator of Fortnite. But in short order, the announcement became the latest controversial touchpoint in Epic's ongoing struggle to compete in the PC game marketplace with Valve-owned Steam. At this point, it seems like Epic can't do anything without whipping the PC gaming community into a frenzy. Pysonix was known for years for its work contributing to other studios' big games. But with the launch of Rocket League, a mashup of soccer with... |
