SpaceX successfully launches first 60 satellites in massive Starlink internet constellation Posted: 23 May 2019 08:35 PM PDT Update May 23rd, 11:35PM ET: SpaceX successfully deployed all 60 Starlink satellites into orbit following liftoff, and the individual vehicles will fan out in orbit over time. The company also landed its Falcon 9 rocket following launch, marking this particular rocket's third time going to space and back. Original Story: Tonight, SpaceX will attempt to jumpstart its ambitious internet-from-space initiative known as Starlink, by launching the first 60 production satellites of nearly 12,000 planned spacecraft into a low orbit above Earth. These inaugural probes do not have all of the capabilities that the finalized satellites are supposed to have, but their launch will get the ball rolling on Starlink — and should help SpaceX learn what it... |
Trump’s latest explanation for the Huawei ban is unacceptably bad Posted: 23 May 2019 04:35 PM PDT Over the past week, the US government has taken extreme and unprecedented steps against Huawei, cutting it off from every US partner at the risk of a long-term rupture in trade between the US and China. But while the impact of the order is clear, it's still not entirely clear why it was put in place. The official explanation, according to the initial executive order, is that Huawei hardware puts the US at risk for espionage. As the order puts it, "foreign adversaries are increasingly creating and exploiting vulnerabilities in information and communications technology and services," and the "unrestricted acquisition or use" of hardware made by foreign adversaries makes those vulnerabilities worse. |
T-Mobile rebrands its unlimited plans as ‘Magenta’ and downgrades free Netflix Posted: 23 May 2019 02:13 PM PDT T-Mobile today announced that its unlimited data plans will soon be called Magenta and Magenta Plus — a change from their current "T-Mobile One" branding. With the new names come some tweaks to how each plan works. First, T-Mobile is now including 3GB of LTE hotspot usage with the base Magenta plan. Previously, T-Mobile One was limited to 3G tethering speeds. But there's bigger adjustment for people on family plans: T-Mobile is downgrading the quality of its "Netflix on Us" promotion on Magenta to Netflix's basic subscription, which is limited to standard definition quality — no HD streaming allowed — and limits you to watching on a single device at a time. T-Mobile is squarely laying the blame for this change on Netflix's most recent... |
Google shut out Baltimore officials using Gmail after ransomware attack Posted: 23 May 2019 02:00 PM PDT The Baltimore city government is recovering from a devastating ransomware attack that has locked up its systems, but officials in the city faced a new problem today. As first reported by The Baltimore Sun, Google blocked city departments from using Gmail accounts created as a workaround. On May 7th, a ransomware attack froze government systems, including email, and demanded the city hand over bitcoin to reverse the hack. Weeks later, the city is still recovering from the attack, which has also shut down systems for paying water bills and some other services. While officials deal with the problem, which could still take months to fix, some have reportedly signed up for free Gmail accounts to keep operating.... |
Julian Assange is facing 17 new criminal charges Posted: 23 May 2019 01:44 PM PDT The Justice Department has filed 17 new criminal charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The charges follow a much more limited indictment unsealed in April, when Assange was charged with violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. According to the indictment, he's now facing several counts of obtaining and disclosing national defense information without authorization, relating to what the Justice Department calls "one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States." Assange was arrested last month after being expelled from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he sought asylum in 2012. UK courts sentenced him to nearly a year in prison for breaching bail conditions, and he began f... |
Snapchat: Your latest reminder anyone a company hires could theoretically breach your privacy Posted: 23 May 2019 01:36 PM PDT Companies store a ton of data. You know this. Everyone knows this. But we're not always happy about the kinds of data they store. We rightfully get pretty touchy when we hear our address, credit card number, mental health inquiries, or private conversations are just hanging out on some internet server where they might wind up in the wrong hands — like, say, an employee of the company that collected them. The latest example: Motherboard is reporting that Snapchat employees have a special tool called SnapLion that can give them access to your location, phone numbers, email addresses, even your saved Snaps — and that some employees have actually abused it to spy on users. Companies usually collect this data to serve you (although sometimes... |
5G could mean less time to flee a deadly hurricane, heads of NASA and NOAA warn Posted: 23 May 2019 12:41 PM PDT It's become increasingly clear that the wireless industry is trying to push the idea of speedy 5G wireless networks before the technology is actually ready. It's a race, and the race is bullshit. But until today, we hadn't realized that people's lives might also be at stake. As reported by The Washington Post and CNET, the heads of NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warn the issue could set back the world's weather forecasting abilities by 40 years — reducing our ability to predict the path of deadly hurricanes and the amount of time available to evacuate. It's because one of the key wireless frequencies earmarked for speedy 5G millimeter wave networks — the 24 GHz band — happens to be very close to the... |
Deepfakes are getting easier than ever to make, new research paper shows Posted: 23 May 2019 12:31 PM PDT To make a convincing deepfake — an AI-generated fake of a video or audio clip — you usually need a neural model that's trained with a lot of reference material. Generally, the larger your dataset of photos, video, or sound, the more eerily accurate the result will be. But now, researchers at Samsung's AI Center have devised a method to train a model to animate with an extremely limited dataset: just a single photo, and the results are surprisingly good. The researchers are able to achieve this effect, (as spotted by Motherboard) by training its algorithm on "landmark" facial features (the general shape of the face, eyes, mouth shape, and more) scraped from a public repository of 7,000 images of celebrities gathered from YouTube. From... |
How to set up Google Assistant on your Sonos speaker Posted: 23 May 2019 12:20 PM PDT Google Assistant is now available on the Sonos One and Sonos Beam, meaning you've now got a second choice besides Alexa for handling your voice commands. If Assistant is already controlling your smart home gadgets — or if you merely think it's better at responding to questions than Alexa — it's probably worth switching over. Even if you don't own a Sonos speaker with a built-in mic like the One or Beam, you can still control the company's other speakers if you have a Google Home speaker somewhere in the house. The setup process is very similar in both cases. We'll start off under the assumption that your Sonos speakers are already up and running. Set up Google Assistant on the Sonos One or Sonos BeamEach of Sonos' smart speakers can... |
Amazon wants to 3D-scan volunteers’ bodies for a $25 gift card Posted: 23 May 2019 11:52 AM PDT Amazon is gathering data about body types by inviting volunteers to get scanned, taped, and photographed. As spotted by Mashable, the company is running a study to "learn about diversity among body shapes," offering a $25 gift card for a 30-minute appointment in New York. Participants will take a survey and assent to 3D scans (plus photos and videos) of their body — first in their everyday attire, then in "form-fitting" clothing. The study is run by Amazon Body Labs, originally a startup that Amazon acquired in 2017. Body Labs produced detailed 3D body models for shopping and gaming; as Mashable notes, it grew out of an attempt to identify criminals with computer vision techniques. And Amazon has gathered this kind of body data before. T... |
