Microsoft is going to ship a full Linux kernel in Windows 10 Posted: 06 May 2019 04:24 PM PDT Microsoft has surprised many in the Linux developer community in recent years. Surprises have included bringing things like adding the Bash shell to Windows, or native OpenSSH in Windows 10, and even including Ubuntu, SUSE Linux, and Fedora all in the Windows Store. Microsoft is now going even further, with plans to ship a full Linux kernel directly in Windows 10. "Beginning with Windows Insiders builds this Summer, we will include an in-house custom-built Linux kernel to underpin the newest version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)," explains Microsoft program manager Jack Hammons. "The kernel itself will initially be based on version 4.19, the latest long-term stable release of Linux. The kernel will be rebased at the... |
Watch Microsoft’s failed HoloLens 2 Apollo moon landing demo Posted: 06 May 2019 03:37 PM PDT Microsoft opened its Build developer conference in Seattle this morning with an awkward start. The software giant was supposed to show a recreation of the Apollo moon landing with its HoloLens 2 headsets. Instead, the demo failed, a nightmare scenario for anyone running a live show. "Well, it seems doing a live demo is actually harder than landing on the moon," said A Man on the Moon author Andrew Chaikin. "Thank you for your time," said Chaikin, before exiting the stage and leaving the audience confused at a failed demo. A minute or so passed, and then Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella appeared on stage, with no acknowledgment of the failed demo or what the company was trying to achieve. If the demo had actually worked, the result was... |
Zhang Yimou’s action-fantasy Shadow sets gorgeous action in a morally gray world Posted: 06 May 2019 01:21 PM PDT Filmmakers often define their movies by making distinctive visual choices. Whether it's Victor Fleming signaling The Wizard of Oz's shift from Kansas to Oz by introducing bold Technicolor, or Zack Snyder reinventing the ancient world on a digital soundstage with 300, some films stand out because they introduce cinematic worlds that don't look like anything that's come before. Add to that list Zhang Yimou's Shadow, a historical fantasy-drama that reimagines the palace intrigue of China's Three Kingdoms era as an almost entirely black-and-white world, where the swirl of the two colors reflects the moral grayness of the people who inhabit it. Zhang creates the look not by shooting in black and white, but by using sets and costumes drained... |
What will Google call Android 10 Q? Posted: 06 May 2019 01:18 PM PDT Android P — officially known as Android 9 Pie — was always going to be the easy one. From Popsicle to Peppermint to Pastry to Popcorn to Pop-Tarts to Praline to Peanut Brittle to Pop Rocks to Pancake to Panna Cotta to Pez to Peeps to Pudding to Parfait to Pocky to Pound Cake to Punschkrapfen to Profiterole to Patbingsu, there was a plethora of possibilities for P's pseudonym. (And that's not even counting fruits like Pear, Passionfruit, Pumpkin, Plum, Peach, or Pamplemousse.) But now that Pie's name is set and done, the eyes of the Android naming community must turn to the real challenge: this year's Android 10 Q release. We've always known that, one day, we'd have to cross this road,... |
FTC sues smart backpack creator for allegedly using crowdfunded money to buy bitcoin Posted: 06 May 2019 01:05 PM PDT The Federal Trade Commission is suing a man for allegedly running off with more than $800,000 he raised on crowdfunding platforms under the premise of creating a smart backpack and other products. The Verge first broke the news of the iBackpack investigation in August, but today marks the agency's first acknowledgment of its work. The lawsuit claims that the creator, Doug Monahan, didn't use his raised Indiegogo or Kickstarter funds to develop or deliver the backpack, but instead, he put the cash toward "various personal expenses," including the purchase of bitcoin, ATM withdrawals, and to pay off credit cards. The agency also claims that backers reached out to Monahan, but he ignored their complaints, shut down the company, and ceased... |
HBO confirms that Game of Thrones’ Starbucks coffee cameo was a mistake Posted: 06 May 2019 12:44 PM PDT Of all the twists and turns on Game of Thrones' most recent episode "The Last of the Starks," the most shocking one for most of the internet was the appearance of an out-of-place cup of Starbucks coffee. Was it an uncharacteristic slip-up from one of the most expensive shows on television? Or perhaps it was a more sinister attempt at product placement for the ubiquitous coffee chain? According to Bernie Caulfield, an executive producer on the show, the offending cup was just a simple mistake. "We're sorry!" Caulfield said in an interview with WNYC radio today, before quipping that "Westeros was the first place to actually, you know, have Starbucks." Caulfield noted... |
Twitter will now let you add photos, videos, or GIFs to retweets Posted: 06 May 2019 12:31 PM PDT Beginning today, Twitter users can add images, videos, and GIFs to their retweets / quoted tweets. The company is rolling out this new feature across Android, iOS, and Twitter's mobile website; it's not on desktop quite yet, however. Adding media to a retweet works just like you'd expect: tap the "retweet with comment" option and then choose the image or GIF icon in the toolbar.
This is a small addition to the service, but Twitter says it was actually quite difficult to design in a way that made sense and wasn't overwhelming when viewed in the timeline. "We found it was challenging for people to quickly understand all the content... |
Apple buys companies at the same rate you buy groceries Posted: 06 May 2019 12:17 PM PDT Apple doesn't always tell the world when it buys another company — but in reality, it's quietly snapping up startups all the time. This weekend, CEO Tim Cook told CNBC that Apple purchases a new company every two to three weeks on average, and has bought between 20 and 25 companies in the last six months alone. That's roughly as often as I bought groceries during some... oh, let's just call them "fresh vegetable adjacent" periods of my life. You know how human beings never fail to be surprised when they get to the cash register and see how much of their paycheck is about to turn into food? I wonder if Apple ever feels that way. I'd guess not, considering how the company's reportedly sitting on $225.4 billion dollars of cash on hand alone... |
Samsung’s 512GB microSD is a huge storage upgrade that’s cheaper than ever Posted: 06 May 2019 11:14 AM PDT Samsung's Evo Select 512GB microSD card is currently $99.99 at Amazon, which is its lowest price yet. If you own a Nintendo Switch — or if your smartphone, tablet, or action camera features a microSD port — this is a relatively affordable route to take if you want a big upgrade to your expandable storage. Up against SanDisk's popular 400GB microSD card, this 512GB Samsung card has the obvious advantage when it comes to storage capacity. It also offers UHS Class 3 speeds compared to UHS Class 1 on the SanDisk model. The SD Association states that this distinction is noteworthy, but it will mostly impact those who record video. Though, if you plan to use Samsung's microSD card for both gaming and recording video, it's good to know that it... |
