Chelsea Manning has been released from jail, but she may be back in a week Posted: 09 May 2019 05:36 PM PDT ![]() Whistleblower and former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning is no longer in jail — but that could change as early as next week. According to a press release from Manning's attorneys — via Sparrow Media — she was released from the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center in Alexandria, VA earlier today, after spending 62 days in jail for refusing to testify about WikiLeaks after being subpoenaed for an ongoing investigation. That investigation isn't to be confused for the prior espionage charges against Manning herself. She already served her time for that, having been released from prison in 2017 after President Obama commuted her sentence to just over seven years in total. In a former life, Bradley Manning was originally... |
With the Pixel 3A, T-Mobile just proved how broken the RCS Chat rollout has become Posted: 09 May 2019 05:07 PM PDT ![]() The Pixel 3A and Pixel 3 are coming as officially supported and sold phones on T-Mobile. The Pixel 3A and Pixel 3 support the next-generation texting protocol called the Universal Profile for RCS (or Rich Communication Services, or Chat). T-Mobile supports RCS. But the Pixel 3A and Pixel 3 won't have RCS chat on T-Mobile's network. How is this so broken? When Google first revealed its plans to support RCS Chat on Android back in April of 2018, I wanted to believe that it could move quickly to replace SMS on Android phones. RCS Chat is still not an end-to-end encrypted communication service, but at least it would provide better chat features like read receipts, group chats, and higher-quality attachments. Pixel phones do support RCS on... |
Watch the first Final Fantasy VII Remake gameplay trailer in nearly four years Posted: 09 May 2019 03:40 PM PDT ![]() After being announced back in 2015, the remake of Final Fantasy VII seems to be finally getting closer. Sony showed off some rare gameplay footage in a State of Play video earlier today, and it's promised to say more about the game in June — presumably around the E3 gaming conference. The one-minute trailer shows off a lot of cinematic shots, but we get a little gameplay as well. It looks relatively similar to the gameplay we saw nearly four years ago — although the interface is more detailed and Cloud's hair looks better (to me, at least). We also get a very quick look at the remake's version of Sephiroth. The game still doesn't have a release date, but in the words of the trailer, "the return draws closer." |
Google is starting to reveal the secrets of its experimental Fuchsia OS Posted: 09 May 2019 03:17 PM PDT ![]() Google Fuchsia remains shrouded in mystery, but the company is slowly beginning to open up about the next-generation operating system, what its purpose is, and what devices it might power. At Google's I/O developer conference this past week, Android and Chrome chief Hiroshi Lockheimer offered some rare insight into Fuchsia, albeit at a very high level, in front of public audiences. What we do know about Fuchsia is that it's an open source project, similar to AOSP, but could run all manner of devices, from smart home gadgets to laptops to phones. It's also known to be built on an all-new, Google-built kernel called "zircon," formerly known as "magenta," and not the Linux kernel that forms the foundation of Android and Chrome OS. Beyond... |
Google’s Pixel 3A is refreshingly easy to repair Posted: 09 May 2019 02:31 PM PDT ![]() iFixit has conducted its teardown of Google's new Pixel 3A and 3A XL smartphones, awarding the devices a reparability score of 6 out of 10. The site found that the new Pixel's display is fairly easy to remove — without the heat gun or blow dryer that's often necessary to melt the adhesive securing the screens on many of today's phones. Instead, Google uses a "spongy, easily-separated adhesive." The downside here — and probably a key reason for the Pixel 3A's lack of water resistance — is that it's likely easier for water to seep through the outer screen perimeter and into the phone. On the plus side,... |
Ubisoft keeps pretending its political games don’t have politics in them Posted: 09 May 2019 02:29 PM PDT ![]() Today Ubisoft officially unveiled the latest Tom Clancy release, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. A sequel to 2017's Wildlands, it's another realistic military shooter — and another chance for Ubisoft to say that its games are free of politics. It's become something of a trend for the French publisher, which makes big-budget action games that feature settings and storylines plucked from the headlines, yet stubbornly refuse to say much of substance despite this. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told The Guardian last year that, instead of making political statements, the company makes games where the goal "is to make people think." Here are just a few examples of the company's insistence on staying away from politics — and just how ridiculous that can... |
Philips Hue bulbs can now be grouped together in ‘zones’ Posted: 09 May 2019 02:14 PM PDT ![]() Philips Hue has been updated today with a new feature that lets you group individual Hue lights and bulbs together as a group — called a "Zone" — making it easier to control larger light setups, via Android Police. The update is available on iOS and Android starting today, and gives Hue the much-needed option to group multiple bulbs together. Hue lights could previously only control bulbs through the company's app on an individual basis or for the entire room at once, but Zones will allow for both more granular control as well as for controlling groups of lights that are in different rooms. Most importantly, it'll make having light fixtures with multiple bulbs easier to control together — previously, the only way to do that was by using... |
Jeff Bezos unveils mock-up of Blue Origin’s lunar lander Blue Moon Posted: 09 May 2019 01:59 PM PDT ![]() Today, Jeff Bezos unveiled the design of his spaceflight company's lunar lander, the Blue Moon, which can take scientific payloads — and eventually humans — to the surface of the Moon. Bezos said that his company, Blue Origin, has been working on the design for the lander for the last three years. "This is an incredible vehicle, and it's going to the Moon," Bezos said after unveiling a mock-up of the Blue Moon lander at the Washington, DC Convention Center. Members of the press and space industry were in attendance to watch the reveal. The event opened with a video from the original Apollo 11 mission, which landed the first astronauts on the surface of the Moon. "If that does not inspire you, you are at the wrong event," Bezos said.

Listen to The Vergecast live at Google I/O Posted: 09 May 2019 01:57 PM PDT ![]() Google's I/O developer conference took place this week in Mountain View, California, and The Vergecast crew not only attended, but we also recorded a show in front of a live audience! Hosts Nilay Patel and Dieter Bohn ran through all of the announcements and then brought on Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google's head of Android and Chrome, and Stephanie Cuthbertson, the company's director of Android, to talk about the newest Pixel devices, the new Nest line, mobile messaging, and, of course, the future of Android. |
Ecobee may also have a new premium thermostat on the way Posted: 09 May 2019 01:54 PM PDT ![]() Yesterday, an Ecobee leak may have inadvertently revealed plans for the smart thermostat maker to expand its presence in the home — but it's still thinking about temperature, too. A new leak shows the company may also have a new flagship thermostat inbound. Dave Zatz of ZatzNotFunny unearthed the following image of a new room sensor that he says will be bundled with a new, premium thermostat with a glass screen instead of plastic — one likely to be called the Ecobee4+.
