The 7 biggest announcements from Square Enix’s E3 2019 press conference

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 07:45 PM PDT

After a disappointing showing last year, tonight at E3 Square Enix had a lot to show off. Top of the list were two long-awaited, somewhat mysterious games: Final Fantasy VII Remake and Avengers. We now have release dates for both, and trailers that show off how they'll really play. Additionally, Final Fantasy VIII is finally getting some love, while the franchise's music is now readily available on streaming platforms. Here's everything you may have missed.

A big new Final Fantasy VII Remake trailer

Square Enix spoiled the news of Final Fantasy VII Remake's March release date last night, but today we got a better look at the game itself via a trailer. It includes a lot detail on how the more action-oriented combat will work, but more...

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 07:23 PM PDT

Square Enix's Avengers game finally has a trailer, revealed this evening during the publisher's E3 2019 press conference. The game was first announced two and a half years ago, when Marvel Entertainment revealed it was working with Square Enix and its studios Eidos Montréal (Deus Ex) and Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the Tomb Raider reboot. News about the title has been sparse in the years since, but tonight we got our first look the superhero game and a lot more details.

Notably, the character models for the Avengers are drastically different than their Marvel Cinematic Universe counterparts. So no Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark or Chris Evans as Captain America. Instead, Crystal Dynamics has created custom looks for each...

Final Fantasy VII Remake’s new trailer shows off combat, Tifa, and Sephiroth

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 06:23 PM PDT

Final Fantasy VII Remake will feature a completely revamped, dynamic battle system. Square Enix showed its most detailed look yet at the game's combat during its E3 2019 press conference; viewers also got a first look at beloved characters Tifa and Sephiroth.

The remake will include a battle system that's a hybrid of real-time action and strategy-based combat, similar in seems to Kingdom Hearts and the most recent Final Fantasy entry. In tactical mode, time slows to a crawl so players can choose commands like limit breaks or magic attacks in the spirit of the turn-based original. As players build their focus gage, they can also stagger enemies and deal extra damage. Although we've yet to see gameplay beyond Midgar, where the original...

Facebook plans to unveil new Portal hardware this year

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 06:23 PM PDT

New versions of the Facebook Portal, the social media company's video-calling smart speaker that launched in November 2018, are coming this fall.

Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, Facebook's vice president of AR/VR, told The Verge's Casey Newton at Recode's CodeCon the company has "lot more that we're going to unveil later in this fall," related to Portal, including "new form factors that we're going to be shipping."

It's unclear what those new form factors look like, but TechCrunch speculated this could be the "Ripley" device that's appeared in Portal firmware repositories. A report from Cheddar further suggested that "Ripley" would allow customers to attach a camera to the top of their television sets and bypass needing a device dedicated to...

AMD blows minds with a 16-core 7nm gaming CPU that works like any other Ryzen

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 05:00 PM PDT

"I don't think there's any reason people would buy an Intel processor after we do this," says AMD's Travis Kirsch.

It's not the first time during my weekend in Los Angeles that I've heard such hubris, but I'm starting to wonder if it's deserved. Because AMD is about to release a wave of 3rd gen Ryzen desktop CPUs that — on paper — sound like they might trounce Intel for the first time in years.

At AMD's Next Horizon Gaming Event, on the outskirts of the E3 2019 gaming show, Kirsch isn't even referring to the just-announced 16-core, 32-thread $750 Ryzen 9 3950X processor, which — with its 3.5GHz base clock, 4.7GHz boost clock, a tremendous 72MB of cache and an unheard-of 105W TDP for that many cores — sounds like it could give AMD's own 3...

AMD’s Radeon 5700 XT wants to put a dent in the world like the dent in its chassis

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 05:00 PM PDT

I've got good news and bad news about AMD's new graphics cards — the just-announced Navi-based Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT.

If you're an AMD fan hoping that this will be the moment in history when the company finally pulls ahead of Nvidia with a high-end video card — like it may be doing against Intel with desktop CPUs — this isn't that moment. Despite its new Navi architecture, which offers 1.25x the performance per clock and 1.5x performance per watt, these aren't even as high-end as AMD's existing (and complicated) 13.8 TFLOP Radeon VII GPU. At up to 9.75 TFLOPs and 7.95 TFLOPs of raw computing power respectively, and with 8GB of GDDR6 memory instead of 16GB of HBM2, the 5700-series isn't a world-beater.

But these two new...

Microsoft now allows Xbox players to pick any gamertag they want

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 04:55 PM PDT

Microsoft is expanding its Xbox gamertag system to allow players to pick any name they want. The software maker is using a similar system to what is used on Steam, Discord, or Battle.net, and it will mean Xbox Live gamertags will include a # number after them if they've already been taken.

The entire structure is changing today, and up to 12 characters can be used for the new gamertag system. If you prefer your existing gamertag then you don't need to change it, and you won't get a number added to the end of your name. If you do decide to switch the first change will be free, and $9.99 thereafter. You can change your Xbox gamertag right here.

Microsoft is also expanding the gamertag system to support more character...

Microsoft is now committing...
