DJI’s newest drone is a $499 tank meant to teach kids how to code Posted: 11 Jun 2019 07:30 PM PDT Dronemaker DJI has spent the last few years running a massive robotics competition in China called RoboMasters, where students build and code robots that do battle in a literal arena. Now, DJI wants to sell a more approachable version of that idea to kids in the US, Europe, and Japan, with an educational toy robot tank called the RoboMaster S1. The RoboMaster S1 is one part camera-equipped remote-controlled car, one part educational platform, and one part DJI flexing its fully mature hardware and software muscles. Available starting Wednesday for $499, the S1 can be driven using a mobile app, or coded to move on its own. It's equipped with 31 sensors that help it map its environment, and it can move in 360 degrees thanks to... |
Fujifilm’s Instax Mini LiPlay brings audio to the instant camera experience Posted: 11 Jun 2019 07:00 PM PDT Fujifilm has just announced its latest Instax camera, the Instax Mini LiPlay. Like prior Instax Mini cameras, the Mini LiPlay takes lo-fi rectangular images that are developed instantly. It also has the ability to capture digital images and audio at the same time, which you can view on its LCD screen or transfer to your phone through Fujifilm's Mini LiPlay app. It's like a smaller version of the Instax Square SQ10 from two years ago, with a new added gimmick. It will be available starting on June 14th for $159.95. Fujifilm's Instax cameras, synonymous with influencers and the occasional sweet 16 party, have never been known for their impressive image quality or high-end features. They exist to capture high contrast aesthetic prints... |
The biggest news from Elon Musk’s Tesla shareholder meeting Posted: 11 Jun 2019 06:16 PM PDT Horses were a somewhat unexpected theme at Tesla's annual shareholder meeting. After CEO Elon Musk suggested that owning a gas car would be the equivalent of using a horse to get around, a Tesla shareholder asked Musk if the company's announced pickup would have enough go power to haul her horse. "I didn't mean to insult horses earlier," Musk replied. "I love horses." (Yes, the planned pickup could haul her horse.) The shareholder meeting had some ups and downs — from a member of animal rights group PETA asking about vegan steering wheels to a discussion about Model 3 demand. The meeting comes at a time when Tesla's stock price is at a two-year low after falling almost continuously throughout 2019. The company suffered one of its worst... |
Konami announces TurboGrafx-16 Mini console Posted: 11 Jun 2019 06:05 PM PDT Konami has announced the latest in the slew of shrunk-down retro consoles, the TurboGrafx-16 Mini. Six games have been announced so far for the system, which will be released in Japan as the PC Engine Mini and in Europe as the PC Engine Core Grafx. It'll have two USB ports for controllers and support a five-way multiplayer adapter. The games announced so far are:
Other versions of the system have different games announced so far. For example, the PC Engine Mini is confirmed to include Castlevania classic Dracula X: Rondo of Blood. The original PC Engine was designed by Hudson and manufactured by NEC. It was released in Japan in 1987, and the US-focused... |
Pixel 4 rumors are heating up: motion sensing and a square camera bump Posted: 11 Jun 2019 04:45 PM PDT Google has been releasing Pixel phones in October for three years now, and so we're expecting a Pixel 4 and a Pixel 4 XL this October too. Like clockwork, the leaks have begun, though at this early date it's a little hard to nail down precise details with confidence. Still, there are a few pieces of information worth looking at, if only because the first set of rumors is plausible and the second set is weird — weird enough to be true. First, we have the traditional first leak for any phone: supposed cases and renders. The renders come from Pricebaba (by way of OnLeaks) and show a classic black slab that breaks a bit from Google's traditional design language. First, it doesn't seem to have a fingerprint sensor on the back. Second, while... |
Instagram will leave up deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg Posted: 11 Jun 2019 03:43 PM PDT A deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg was uploaded to Instagram earlier this week, as first reported by Motherboard, leading to heated speculation as to how the company would react to apparent defamation against its founder and CEO. But according to a spokesperson, Facebook will not be removing the video, following the same policy applied to a distorted, viral video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi only a few weeks ago. "We will treat this content the same way we treat all misinformation on Instagram," a spokesperson told The Verge. "If third-party fact-checkers mark it as false, we will filter it from Instagram's recommendation surfaces like Explore and hashtag pages." |
The Atari VCS retro console can now be preordered from GameStop and Walmart Posted: 11 Jun 2019 02:36 PM PDT The long-awaited Atari VCS retro console is up for preorder starting today from GameStop, Walmart, and the company directly. It's still months away from shipping, mind you: Indiegogo backers are scheduled to get it first beginning in December. Retailers won't be shipping out their units until March 2020 — assuming this timing actually sticks, that is. Atari's Indiegogo campaign raised over $3 million. The Atari VCS is an oddball machine with retro styling and powerful guts inside. It features an AMD processor and is capable of 4K gaming with support for HDR and 60 fps frame rate, according to the company. It will be offered in several different configurations:

Firefox’s new logo has more fire, less fox Posted: 11 Jun 2019 02:29 PM PDT They warned us that it was coming, and now it's here: Mozilla took the wraps off its new logo for the storied Firefox web browser today. But before you say "What did they do to that poor fox!" know that the logo you see above actually isn't the browser logo — that's the brand-new overarching logo for Mozilla's whole family of Firefox products, with each component (including the browser) having its own logo, too. Here: See? Fox is alive and well... if a little ethereal. The logo also looks a little like a world on fire, which many of us can easily identify with these days. I think it'll grow on me. I whipped up this little comparison image so you can see how the browser logo has evolved over the years: Last... |
iMovie for iOS adds a green screen feature Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:46 PM PDT The latest update for Apple's iMovie for iOS gives the video-editing app a green screen feature, 80 new soundtracks, ClassKit support, and more. Plenty of other video-editing apps offer green screen functionality, but it's nice to have the option available within iMovie. The feature lets you remove anything in the background that's green or blue, and you can adjust the effect with a 4-point mask as well as its strength. To test this out, I took a video from my trip to Hawaii and added it as a green / blue screen over a clip of my beloved Popplio doll. iMovie erased the blue from my video of the beach and sky, making it look like a giant Popplio is terrorizing Hawaii. The magic of video editing! Additional features include... |
YouTube is changing its notification system to address creator frustration Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:29 PM PDT YouTube creators have long bemoaned the company's irregular and untrustworthy notification delivery system, but new product changes are looking to address those frustrations. Notifications are now automatically set to personalized, according to a new blog post from the product team. That means that not everyone who subscribes is going to get the same videos delivered to their inbox. Under the new system — at least in theory — in order to receive notifications about every video a creator releases, people have to click subscribe, hit the golden bell icon, and ensure notifications are enabled on their account. If they don't do this — and just hit the red subscribe button — they may not receive notifications for creators' new videos,... |
