Biden pushes smart guns as solution for gun violence during primary debate

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:01 PM PDT

During Thursday night's Democratic debates, former Vice President Joe Biden pitched his "smart gun" policy on the national stage when asked how he would work to combat gun violence.

"We should have smart guns," Biden said. "No gun should be able to be sold unless your biometric measure could pull that trigger. It's within our right to do that. We can do that. Our enemy is the gun manufacturers, not the NRA. The gun manufacturers."

It's a policy Biden has been touting frequently along the campaign trail, but the first it's been brought up throughout this year's Democratic debates. Generally, Biden has been advocating for some form of regulation requiring gun manufacturers to include a biometric system that would prohibit guns from being...

Here are Jony Ive’s most important — and indulgent — Apple product videos

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 04:54 PM PDT

Jony Ive, Apple's Chief Design Officer and arguably the biggest influence on the look and feel of the company's products for nearly three decades, is leaving. The news, abruptly announced earlier this afternoon, shocked the tech industry, despite years-long rumors that he was headed for the door soon. Ive claims he will continue to work closely with Apple through his upcoming design firm LoveFrom.

We don't know what kind of impact this will have on Apple's business or its design philosophy; Ive has been somewhat distant from the company's public showings of late, even though he returned in 2017 to take on the design chief role after a two-year "hands off" break back.

The end of an era: Jony Ive’s indelible mark on Apple and tech

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 03:27 PM PDT

Jony Ive — aka Sir Jonathan Ive, who for the last two-plus decades has been the creative mind behind nearly all of Apple's iconic hardware — is officially parting ways with the technology company to form his own design firm, LoveFrom. And even though Ive's firm will continue to work with Apple from the outside, this is still the end of an era for Apple, with the help of Ive's guidance, return from the brink and become one of the largest and most important companies on the planet.

Ive first started at Apple in 1992, as a member of the design division, where he primarily helped create the Apple Newton. Five years later, and Ive was ready to leave, but the then-returning Steve Jobs appointed him as Apple's senior vice president of...

Southwest and United Airlines extend 737 Max cancellations after new flaw found

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 02:41 PM PDT

Southwest and United Airlines have extended the cancellation of flights using Boeing 737 Max aircraft, following the news that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has discovered a new flaw in the plane's flight computer.

Southwest Airlines had previously announced it would begin using the 737 Max again starting September 2nd, as long as the plane was re-certified by the FAA. Now, the airline says it won't start using the plane again until at least October 1st. Some 150 flights will be removed from Southwest's schedule of 4,000 per day.

United Airlines had previously canceled 737 Max flights through August 3rd. But the company announced Wednesday that it was extending that cancellation through at least September 3rd. United will...

Jony Ive leaving Apple after nearly 30 years to start new design firm

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:59 PM PDT

Apple's chief design officer Jonathan Ive will depart the company later this year, bringing an end to a tenure spent crafting some of technology's most influential products, including the iPhone. Ive, who has led Apple's design team since 1996, is leaving "to form an independent design company which will count Apple among its primary clients." The company is called LoveFrom, and Ive will be joined by famed designer Marc Newson on the new venture. Despite stepping down from his executive position, Ive and Apple both claim he will still work "on a range of projects with Apple."

"Apple will continue to benefit from Jony's talents by working directly with him on exclusive projects, and through the ongoing work of the brilliant and passionate...

Apple’s older iPad Pro is as cheap as the new iPad Air, and better in a few ways

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:31 PM PDT

The 2017 iPad Pro (64GB, Wi-Fi) is currently $474 at Walmart, and as for why you might consider buying an older iPad instead of one of the newer models, there are a few reasons. The 2018 iPad Air is practically a carbon copy of this model and has most of its best features, like the True Tone tech that adjusts the screen's color temperature based on the ambient light in the room, and it has a Smart Connector for Apple's Smart Keyboard.

The Air features a newer processor, and will likely be the faster of the two tablets after a few years, but it actually has less RAM than the Pro (2GB versus 4GB), so the older iPad is better cut out for multitasking. The Air features just two speakers compared to the four found on the old iPad Pro, so the...

NASA chooses Saturn’s moon Titan as its next destination

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:05 PM PDT

A new mission involving a drone-like lander will explore the surface of Saturn's moon Titan. The mission — called Dragonfly — received a coveted funding slot from NASA's New Frontiers program, which funds ambitious missions to explore objects in our Solar System.

"Dragonfly is a Mars rover-sized drone that will be able to fly from place to place on Titan," Elizabeth "Zibi" Turtle, the lead investigator of the mission, said in a briefing. The 10-foot-long, and 10-foot-wide dual-quadcopter will look like a giant drone, with eight rotors helping it soar across the moon's surface for about 8 or 9 miles (12-14 kilometers) in under an hour. It will make one of these "hops" about once every 16 days, scouting out future landing sites, spending a...

Flappy Royale turns Flappy Bird into Fortnite

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:02 PM PDT

Flappy Bird is a gaming legend and one of the most explosively popular mobile games ever made. But what if it were more like Fortnite?

That's the idea behind Flappy Royale, a new game from developers Orta Therox and Em Lazer-Walker (with contributions from Zach Gage). It mashes together the endless flapping gameplay of Flappy Bird with the last-bird-standing style of the battle royale genre that's all the rage these days.

Gameplay is simple, just like it was in the original game: tap on your bird to flap and dodge your way through some suspiciously Mario-esque pipes. Except the goal isn't to survive as long as you can; it's to survive longer than the other 99 players, all of whom you can see flapping alongside you in real time. And...

Apple Music has surpassed 60 million subscribers, says Eddy Cue

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 12:46 PM PDT

Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue says Apple Music has surpassed 60 million subscribers, according an interview with French media site Numerama. This milestone adds 10 million more subscribers to the last known figure, which was still around 50 million as of April. At the time, Apple Music was reported as having more listeners than Spotify in the US. (Spotify, however, boasts 100 million subscribers worldwide.)

"In the Apple ecosystem, Apple Music is the number one streaming service," Cue tells the publication. It's easy to see how Apple was able to rapidly grow its subscriber numbers over the past months. This year alone, it slashed prices in India, offered free music streaming with American Airlines, and hooked Shazam users up with f...

Final Fantasy XIV is getting a live-action TV series

Final Fantasy XIV is making the jump to live action with a new TV series that is set to be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Hivemind, the studio that makes The Expanse and Netflix's upcoming The Witcher show

Said to be "inspired directly by the world and characters of the title's fourteenth installment," neither Square Enix nor the production companies have said much about what the show will be about or where it'll take place relative to the ongoing MMO. We do know that popular elements of the franchise, including "magitek and beastmen, airships and chocobos," and the live-action debut of recurring character Cid will appear in the show.

The show won't be the first...
