Posted: 05 Jun 2019 03:44 PM PDT Nest's smart doorbell can only be installed on homes that have the right kind of doorbell wiring, so to open up the product to everyone else, Google has started to sell an adapter that lets you plug the doorbell into an outlet inside your home. It's not the most elegant solution in the world. You have to drill a hole through your doorframe in order to feed the wire from inside your home to the doorbell on the outside of it. But it's at least some kind of solution, and it might make sense for offices located inside of larger buildings that want to watch their own front door. The adapter isn't made by Google, but by the company Ninety7, which is mostly known for making a lot of silly... |
Xiaomi explains more about how its under-screen camera actually works Posted: 05 Jun 2019 02:36 PM PDT The fight over notches is quickly becoming a thing of the past, with companies like Oppo and Xiaomi already working on transparent display cameras that hide the sensor beneath the screen — no notch required. Today, Xiaomi senior vice president Wang Xiang tweeted a series of slides that explained more about how the feature actually works, via DPReview. For Xiaomi's implementation of the feature, the camera is embedded in the top of the device, as usual. But instead of putting a border around it (a notch) or cutting a hole in the screen (a hole-punch display), the camera is covered with a "special-low-reflective glass with high transmittance." Xiaomi says the setup allows the area of the display to become transparent to take pictures, and... |
Uber starts allowing Eats orders inside its main app Posted: 05 Jun 2019 01:26 PM PDT Just one week after CEO Dara Khosrowshahi hinted that Uber was experimenting with cross-promoting its food delivery service in the company's main ride-hailing app, TechCrunch has dug up exactly what that looks like. The company is currently rolling out a way for customers to place Eats food delivery orders inside the main Uber app. If a customer does not already have the standalone Uber Eats app, and lives in one of the hundreds of cities where Eats operates alongside ride-hailing — but, crucially, one where there are no scooters or bikes available, meaning New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco are not included here — the Eats logo will now show up in the top right corner of the main Uber app. Tapping the logo will bring up a fully... |
YouTube revokes ads from Steven Crowder until he stops linking to his homophobic T-shirts Posted: 05 Jun 2019 12:07 PM PDT YouTube has stopped conservative pundit Steven Crowder from running ads on his YouTube channel after a tweet thread from Vox host Carlos Maza outlined several instances of Crowder using homophobic language. YouTube's decision to suspend monetization comes just one day after the company stated it wouldn't remove Crowder's channel. (Disclosure: Vox is a publication of Vox Media, which also owns The Verge.) The restriction isn't permanent, though: YouTube said Crowder's monetization could be restored if he "addresses all of the issues with his channel," according to a recent tweet. That includes removing links to a store where he sells shirts that include slogans like "Socialism Is For Fags." Maza previously criticized YouTube's decision... |

Sony’s PlayStation lead confirms more PS5 details ahead of E3 Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:38 AM PDT Sony is skipping E3 this year, but the company is still offering up some new details about the PlayStation 5: it'll come with an SSD by default, instead of a slower HDD like the PS4; it'll support 4K graphics at a 120Hz refresh rate, for a much smoother look on displays that can handle the faster speed; and game saves will in some way be able to transfer between console generations, so you can pick up where you left off when you start playing a game again on the new console. The new details were reported by CNET, which spoke with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan. Ryan also said that Sony plans to take the PlayStation Now game streaming service "to the next level later this year." Though he didn't expand on what that meant,... |
Amazon launches AI-powered ‘Shazam for clothes’ fashion search Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:38 AM PDT Amazon is a behemoth of online retailing, but there's one sector it has yet to crack: fashion. To help dig into this lucrative market, the company is introducing a new AI-powered tool named StyleSnap which will help customers find clothes to buy. StyleSnap is basically Shazam for clothes, built into the Amazon mobile app. Users can take a picture or upload an image and StyleSnap will use machine learning to "match the look in the photo" and find similar items for sale on Amazon.com. Amazon's consumer worldwide CEO Jeff Wilke unveiled the feature at the company's Re:MARS conference in Las Vegas today, saying: "The simplicity of the customer experience belies the complexity of the technology behind it." |
Here’s Amazon’s new transforming Prime Air delivery drone Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:23 AM PDT Amazon has unveiled the latest version of its Prime Air delivery drone, a hybrid aircraft that's capable of vertical takeoff and landing as well as sustained forward flight. The company says it wants to launch a delivery service using the drone in "the coming months," but has not said where this might take place or how many customers it might cover. Introducing the drone onstage at Amazon's Re:MARS conference in Las Vegas, Amazon's consumer worldwide CEO Jeff Wilke emphasized the aircraft's safety features. "We know customers will only feel comfortable receiving drone deliveries if the system is incredibly safe," said Wilke. Amazon says the drone's safety features make it as "robust and stable as commercial aircraft" — a big claim for... |
Creators aren’t surprised that YouTube won’t enforce its own policies against harassment Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:20 AM PDT After five days of investigation, YouTube decided that conservative pundit Steven Crowder's use of homophobic language to talk about Vox host Carlos Maza didn't violate its community guidelines. The response from the creator community was instantaneous. Many denounced YouTube's lack of action, pointing out that Crowder's use of homophobic language to humiliate Maza directly violated the company's own rules. Others saw Crowder's behavior as pushing the limits of what YouTube would allow, but still believed it was acceptable. While both groups were waiting to see if YouTube did anything, neither were surprised by the ultimate inaction: YouTube has long faced criticism for very selectively punishing users who seem to cross the line. Y... |
