Lyft is suing San Francisco to prevent competing bikeshares from moving in Posted: 07 Jun 2019 05:47 PM PDT Lyft filed a lawsuit against San Francisco today claiming city authorities are violating a contract it has with the ride-hailing company that gives Lyft exclusive rights to operate bike-share programs in the area. San Francisco's Municipal Transportation Agency, on the other hand, says it has the authority to sign partnerships with dockless (also called stationless) vendors, and that Lyft's contract gives it exclusivity only on docked bike shares. Lyft is seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent the city from issuing bikeshare permits to new vendors. As of today, Lyft owns the company Motivate, which operates the Ford GoBike bikeshare program in San Francisco, a docked program that until very recently offered both electric and... |
George R.R. Martin is working on a game with FromSoftware Posted: 07 Jun 2019 04:55 PM PDT Two of the biggest names in fantasy are collaborating. According to a new leak just ahead of an official E3 reveal, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is working with Dark Souls studio FromSoftware on a new game called Elden Ring. At this point we don't know anything else about the game aside from the title, but given the creators, it's safe to assume it takes place in a deeply realized fantasy world. The game is slated for Xbox One, PS4, and PC, and will be published by Bandai Namco. We'll likely hear more about Elden Ring at Microsoft's press conference on Sunday. While From has been around since 1986, it wasn't until the release of the dark fantasy action RPG Demon's Souls in 2009, helmed by visionary director Hidetaka... |
YouTube’s new policies are catching educators, journalists, and activists in the crossfire Posted: 07 Jun 2019 03:23 PM PDT YouTube's new policies designed to more aggressively tackle supremacist content have also led to some creators claiming their videos have been improperly removed or hidden in the process. They argue that YouTube is not distinguishing between actual hate content and videos that document hate groups for educational or journalistic purposes. YouTube announced on Wednesday that it was taking stronger measures to ban "videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion based on qualities like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status." It was only minutes later that creators began to see channels being removed or videos pulled down — including a channel run by a... |
Posted: 07 Jun 2019 03:07 PM PDT There was so much news this week that we had to add another Vergecast episode to cover it all. Besides Apple's WWDC, the most important story in The Verge's coverage has been the various crises YouTube is facing over its moderation policies — problems with hate speech and harassment, pedophiles on the platform, and white supremacist content. Verge editor-in-chief and Vergecast co-host Nilay Patel invites Silicon Valley editor Casey Newton and senior reporter Adi Robertson to the show to explain what is happening on YouTube, how YouTube is handling it, and the outrage cycle surrounding it. Stories discussed in this episode: |
Automakers still want to lower emissions standards in the US Posted: 07 Jun 2019 02:55 PM PDT This week, a group of 17 automakers sent a letter to President Trump asking him to back down from his administration's plan to roll back Obama-era vehicle emissions standards. But while the letter was framed as a rebuke, or a warning, it made something clear: many of the world's biggest automakers still want to lower emissions standards at a time when the planet is experiencing a blooming environmental crisis brought on by humans. The Environmental Protection Agency first announced these emissions standards in 2009, and they went into place in 2012. According to the rule, automakers agreed to make it so their fleets would have average CO2 emissions of 163 grams per mile, equivalent to an average fleet fuel economy of 54.5 miles per... |
Microsoft pulls open facial recognition dataset after Financial Times investigation Posted: 07 Jun 2019 02:46 PM PDT Earlier this week, Microsoft removed a database of more than 10 million faces, intended as a test and training dataset for facial recognition algorithms, according to a report by the Financial Times. Known as MS Celeb, the database contained more than 10 million images of roughly 100,000 people, largely scraped from publicly available online sources. While no individual photo in the dataset was difficult to find, the volume of images and the structured data accompanying them made the dataset extremely useful in training programs to recognize a person's face across different photos. The takedown came after an earlier Financial Times investigation found that many of the people represented in the dataset were not aware of it and did not... |
Uber’s chief operating and marketing officers are both leaving the company Posted: 07 Jun 2019 01:58 PM PDT Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has announced that chief operating officer Barney Harford and chief marketing officer Rebecca Messina are both departing the company. In a Friday email to employees, Khosrowshahi said, "over the years, I've learned that at every critical milestone, it's important to step back and think about how best to organize for the future. Given that we're a month past the IPO, now is one of those times." The executives are stepping down almost a month after Uber went public in the biggest tech IPO in years. The actual IPO was viewed by many as a disappointment, but Uber has been trading above its stock price as of this week. Harford was named COO in December 2017, with Uber receiving criticism for the choice after it was... |
Here’s what creatives think of the new Mac Pro Posted: 07 Jun 2019 01:26 PM PDT Apple's new Mac Pro is its most powerful computer ever, with performance specs catered toward creative professionals like visual effects artists, musicians, and filmmakers who need a lot of processing power. Creatives have been asking for a new professional-level computer from Apple since the disappointment of the un-upgradable trash can-looking Mac Pro from 2013, and Apple finally delivered this week with something very pricey and very powerful. But is the new Mac Pro actually what pros have been looking for? From the modular design that allows flexibility for upgrades to the dedicated Afterburner video editing card that supposedly eliminates the need for proxy workflows, everything about the machine is extreme, including its $5,999... |

Google must face lawsuit alleging hiring bias against conservatives, judge rules Posted: 07 Jun 2019 12:36 PM PDT Google will have to face a California lawsuit accusing the company of bias against conservative job candidates as part of a legal challenge first brought against the company by James Damore, author of the infamous 2017 "Google memo." Damore exited the lawsuit last year and entered arbitration with the company. But the suit, which argues Google's hiring practices are biased against white and Asian people, conservatives, and men, will move ahead after surviving a dismissal motion from the company. In a statement, the law firm representing the plaintiffs said the suit will now move into the discovery phase. The plaintiffs in the case are seeking class certification to represent others they believe... |
