Microsoft hints at next-generation Xbox ‘Scarlet’ in E3 teasers Posted: 08 Jun 2019 04:52 PM PDT Microsoft is less than 24 hours away from unveiling its next-generation Xbox plans at E3, and the company has been hiding secret messages in its own teasers. Twitter users have noticed that each of Microsoft's daily E3 countdown videos has a secret code hidden in the left-hand side of the video. The first, from a couple of days ago, has R 255, followed by G 36 in the second, and B 0 in the latest today. Together that forms the code RGB (255,36,0), the RGB color code for Scarlet. Rumors have suggested that Microsoft is creating two new consoles under a general "Scarlett" codename, with a high-end console codenamed Anaconda and an Xbox One S equivalent codenamed Lockhart. It appears Microsoft is ready to talk about its Scarlett plans, as... |
EA announces a trio of intriguing new indie games at E3 2019 Posted: 08 Jun 2019 02:30 PM PDT While EA is best known for blockbuster franchises like Battlefield, FIFA, and, more recently, Apex Legends, the publisher's EA Originals label is home to some excellent smaller experiences. Today, at E3 in Los Angeles, the company revealed three more intriguing indie games that are in the works. The first is called Lost in Random, and it's developed by Zoink Studios, the team behind the meditative adventure Fe. We don't know much about the game, but, like its predecessor, it has an absolutely gorgeous, ethereal visual style. It's described as "a blend of strategy and action that explores the notion of chance and possibility, set within a beautifully dark and vivid world." Lost in Random is joined by RustHeart, a sci-fi action... |
Hulu will begin streaming the first three seasons of Veronica Mars on July 1st Posted: 08 Jun 2019 11:30 AM PDT Cult classic TV series Veronica Mars is returning next month with a new, long-awaited fourth season on Hulu, but before it does, fans will be able to catch up on the entire show. Hulu revealed today that the show's three seasons will be available starting on July 1st. The show follows Veronica Mars, a high school student played by Kristen Bell, who moonlights as a private detective, while also navigating the problems that arise with your regular high school existence. The series ran on UPN and the CW between 2004 and 2007, and was later made into a feature film in 2014. Hulu also released a trailer that summarizes the first three seasons if you want to jog your memory now. Last year, Hulu announced that it was bringing the TV show... |
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order contains an interesting link to the franchise’s larger world Posted: 08 Jun 2019 11:00 AM PDT Footage of Respawn Entertainment's upcoming game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order just hit the web, and it shows off a really interesting connection to the rest of the franchise: Saw Gerrera, the leader of a rebel faction in the years before the formation of the Rebel Alliance. The 14-minute clip follows the game's character, Cal Kestis, a Force user who escaped the Jedi Purge at the end of the Clone Wars, and who is now on the run from the Empire. Saw appears towards the beginning on the Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk, where he's working to disrupt the Empire's plans. It's a brief appearance, but it highlights how central the character has become in the larger Star Wars universe — a figure that is proving to be hugely important to the era... |
Apex Legends’ second season will work to fix its first Posted: 08 Jun 2019 10:26 AM PDT Respawn Entertainment heard complaints about the first season of its battle royale game Apex Legends, and is shifting gears in season 2. The second season is called Battle Charge. It will introduce a new weapon (called the L-Star, seen below), a new legend (Wattson, also below), and other improvements on the first season. The team is also introducing a "Ranked Mode" to Apex Legends in the second season to help players hone their competitive skills, according to Drew McCoy, project lead on Apex Legends. McCoy acknowledged during the game's presentation at EA Play that the first season wasn't as well received as the team hoped, and took community feedback to heart when implementing challenges for the second season.

The company behind Maker Faire and Make magazine has abruptly shut down Posted: 08 Jun 2019 10:09 AM PDT Maker Media, the company that publishes Make Magazine and Maker Faire is laying off its staff and halting its operations amidst financial troubles, according to TechCrunch. Maker Media CEO and founder Dale Dougherty confirmed to TechCrunch that the company was ceasing operations and that it had laid off 22 employees, citing financial difficulties with publishing a magazine and the lack of corporate sponsorship. "I started this 15 years ago and it's always been a struggle as a business to make this work," he told TechCrunch. "Print publishing is not a great business for anybody, but it works…barely. Events are hard . . . there was a drop off in corporate sponsorship." Launched in 2005, Maker became a major publication covering the "Maker... |
Watch Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s E3 gameplay trailer Posted: 08 Jun 2019 09:40 AM PDT One young Jedi is running rampant in the first 15-minute, uncut gameplay trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The footage takes place three hours into the game. Main character Cal Kestis is no longer a Padawan but also not a full-fledged Jedi. The game footage takes place on Kashyyyk, a Wookie planet, where Wookies have been enslaved. Cal Kestis is accompanied by an adorable little droid, BD-1, on his mission in the forest-heavy world. It even appears that Forest Whitaker, who played Saw Gerrera in the 2016 standalone spinoff film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, provided voice acting for the game. A report from Game Informer confirmed that Whitaker reprised his role for the game. Fallen Order is Respawn... |
China warned tech companies of consequences for cooperating with US ban Posted: 08 Jun 2019 09:16 AM PDT Chinese governmental officials reportedly warned numerous tech companies of "dire consequences," should they cooperate with a US ban against doing business with Chinese tech firm Huawei, according to a report in The New York Times. The move comes after China threatened to set up a blacklist of "unreliable entities" in retaliation for the ban. The Times reports that the warnings came in a series of meetings held earlier this week by members of China's National Development and Reform Commission, along with members of the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, before a "broad range of companies that export goods to China," according to a pair of individuals who were familiar with the talks. It's not clear... |
9 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 08 Jun 2019 09:00 AM PDT I finally got around to watching Mid90s the other week. The film — written and directed by Jonah Hill — is a surprisingly lo-fi, intimate, personal movie about a kid trying to figure out who he is and how to fit in as he hangs out with a ragtag crew of wannabe skateboarders. Hill does a really great job showing the isolation and awkwardness of his main character with quiet pauses and wonderfully natural, casual dialog that feels as messy as conversations among young teens really would be. It lets him build a cast of characters who feel vibrant and full, while still coming across just as lost and confused as the film's much quieter lead. The most fascinating thing the movie does, though, is let its characters screw up — a lot. Even after... |
Dive into a new sci-fi anthology set in the world’s oceans Posted: 08 Jun 2019 08:00 AM PDT Current Futures, a new sci-fi anthology of short stories, was published online this week in honor of World Oceans Day, taking readers deep into fantastic (and wet) futures. Genetic editing, holograms, and underwater cities each make appearances in the 18 stories and 18 accompanying illustrations. The stories were edited by sci-fi author Ann VanderMeer, and come from authors all over the world. One author, Lauren Beukes, even wrote her story, "Her Seal Skin Coat" while in Antarctica. The anthology was sponsored by the XPrize Foundation, a group that organizes massive competitions focused on pushing technology forward in different fields, including space exploration, robotics, artificial intelligence, among many others. Their latest... |
