Facebook’s $5 billion FTC fine is an embarrassing joke Posted: 12 Jul 2019 06:05 PM PDT Facebook's stock went up after news of a record-breaking $5 billion FTC fine for various privacy violations broke today. That, as the New York Times' Mike Isaac points out, is the real story here: the United States government spent months coming up with a punishment for Facebook's long list of privacy-related bad behavior, and the best it could do was so weak that Facebook's stock price went up.
From some other perspectives, that $5 billion fine is a big deal, of course: it's the biggest fine in FTC history, far bigger than the $22 million fine levied against Google in... |
If you bought influencer bathwater, could you test it for DNA? Posted: 12 Jul 2019 03:36 PM PDT A Reddit post made a major splash on the internet this week when it claimed that the infamous, $30 "GamerGirl bathwater" being sold by social media star Belle Delphine contained no human DNA — and therefore might not be her bathwater at all. This was promptly challenged by other Reddit users and debunked: the shipments of said bathwater hadn't even been sent out yet. As the news of the non-scandal broke around The Verge offices, reporters began pelting the science desk with questions, including; "wait, you can test bathwater for DNA?" "Yes, you can," says forensic biologist Helen Page. Page is a senior lecturer at Teesside University in the UK, and has actually studied how to recover very specific samples of DNA from a bath. |
Apple restores banned parental control app OurPact to the App Store Posted: 12 Jul 2019 01:25 PM PDT Apple has reversed course on its ban of parental control app OurPact, allowing the ousted software to return to the App Store in its original form and without any limitations or restrictions. The move marks an end to a months-long dispute between Apple and a variety of parental control companies affected by Apple's restrictions. The fact that Apple removed or prevented updates to many of these apps (including OurPact) raised eyebrows because it allegedly stemmed from a sudden change in policy that reclassified the apps as unsafe, due to the technology they relied on for managing kids' devices. The issue was that these apps were using a suite of tools called MDM, or multi-device management, designed for management of hardware in IT and... |
Facebook reportedly reaches $5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission Posted: 12 Jul 2019 01:04 PM PDT Facebook has reportedly reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over repeated privacy violations, The Wall Street Journal reports. According to the Journal, the FTC voted this week to approve a $5 billion settlement, which has now moved to the Justice Department's civil division for review. It is unclear how long the review will take. A Facebook spokesman declined to comment or confirm the report. The Washington Post and New York Times later confirmed the details in the Journal's report. The Journal reported that the FTC voted along party lines, with three Republican commissioners voting in favor of the settlement and two Democratic commissioners voting against it. Aside from the fine, it is unclear what the settlement... |
Nielsen confirms that Stranger Things 3 was a big hit for Netflix Posted: 12 Jul 2019 12:26 PM PDT Nielsen Media Research has released its ratings for the latest season of Netflix's Stranger Things, showing that ratings for the third season over the first four days of release were significantly higher than for the second season. Those numbers back up Netflix's assertion that the show broke records, although they highlight the differences in how both companies measure their audiences. On Monday, Netflix announced that at least 40.7 million accounts watched the series since its premiere on July 4th, "more than any other [Netflix] film or series in its first four days." The company said 18.2 million of those accounts had already finished the entire season. The company counts a "view" as an account finishing at least 70 percent of an... |
Mini revival of the TurboGrafx-16 comes out March 2020 with 50 games Posted: 12 Jul 2019 12:18 PM PDT The TurboGrafx-16 Mini, a retro revival of the classic Japanese game console announced last month, is slated to release on March 19th, 2020, Konami announced today. The full game list is also out, and it includes 50 titles. We're still waiting on price, but it's likely to cost somewhere in the ballpark of the Sega Genesis Mini and other retro consoles. What's particularly notable in this bit of news is that we know now the console will have the same mix of English and Japanese titles on the Europe, Japan, and American versions of the mini console, so owners will get to play the rare Hideo Kojima title Snatchers in its original form. Another oddity in the lineup is both English and Japanese versions of the classic RPG Ys I & II. The... |
Sony’s new USB-C hub promises the fastest data transfer and charging yet Posted: 12 Jul 2019 12:12 PM PDT USB-C hubs are (sadly) pretty common these days, and now Sony is getting in the game with the MRW-S3, a nice-looking hub that checks a whole bunch of high-end spec boxes like 100W USB-C PD charging and a UHS-II SD card reader that most don't. For any hub, the most important spec is what ports it offers, and Sony has plenty: there's an HDMI port for video (with support for 4K video at 30 fps), a USB-C PD port for plugging in power (at up to the aforementioned 100W speed), a USB-C and USB-A port for external devices and accessories, both rated for the USB 3.1 Gen 2. Sony also says that specification makes its hub the fastest on the market, with transfer speeds of up to 1000 MB/s, at least for the USB-C port. And rounding things out are an... |

Mayors around the country join forces to fight hacker ransoms Posted: 12 Jul 2019 11:47 AM PDT Over 225 mayors across the US have backed a resolution to not pay ransoms to hackers, as reported by The New York Times. The resolution, titled "Opposing Payment To Ransomeware Attack Perpetrators," states that the mayors stand "united against paying ransoms in the event of an IT security breach." The resolution came out of the annual US Conference of Mayors, which took place in Honolulu from June 28th through July 1st. According to the statement, at least 170 county, city, or state government systems have been targeted by ransomware attacks since 2013. These attacks use malware programs that render systems inoperable, with the hacker(s) usually demanding payment in the form of cryptocurrency in exchange for restoring systems. The... |
United cancels 5,000 more Boeing 737 Max flights through October Posted: 12 Jul 2019 10:57 AM PDT United Airlines has extended its cancellation of Boeing 737 Max flights until at least November 3rd, the company announced on Friday, which will affect 5,000 flights through September and October. The airline had previously extended cancellations through September 3rd, following the news that the Federal Aviation Administration had discovered a new flaw in the flight software of Boeing's 737 Max plane — one that was different from the flaw that led to two deadly crashes that claimed 346 lives. Boeing's CEO recently acknowledged that the company needs more time to fix this new flaw and that the FAA will have to approve the fix before it recertifies the plane. Southwest Airlines, which uses more 737 Max planes than its US competitors,... |
