Page through computer history with this complete scan of NeXT’s Fall 1989 catalog

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 01:00 PM PDT

An amateur computer historian has unearthed a cool piece of technology paraphernalia: NeXT's Fall 1989 catalog. Kevin Savetz recently scanned the entire 138-page book, and posted the files to Archive.org.

NeXT was the company that Steve Jobs founded in 1985 after he was fired by Apple. The company designed computer workstations and lasted through 1997, when Jobs was rehired at Apple.

Describing himself as an amateur computer historian, Savetz says that he's scanned "tens of thousands of pages of computer magazines, newsletters, and catalogs" over the years, and also co-hosts ANTIC: The Atari 8-Bit Podcast, conducting hundreds of interviews with the people involved in the company.

Check out this incredible archive of Apple’s promotional photos and ads

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 12:00 PM PDT

Graphic designer and marketer Sam Henri Gold has assembled an incredible archive of Apple's promotional materials that stretches back to the 1970s, which he's uploaded into a Google Drive folder for people to look through. The folder contains hundreds of videos and pictures of the company's products, and it's well worth the time to take a trip down memory lane.

Gold has painstakingly organized this miniature online museum by decade and year, allowing visitors to scroll through and see how Apple marketed itself over the years. The archive mainly features the company's TV ads, but there are also promotional features, product photos, and print advertisements as well. Gold notes that he began archiving the videos a couple of years ago after...

Amazon is starting Prime Day 2019 a day early with discounts on its devices

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 12:00 PM PDT

Prime Day 2019 starts on Monday, July 15th, but Amazon has announced that it will knock the prices on a bunch of products down a day before it begins, starting on Sunday, July 14th, at 3PM ET / 12PM PT. Two of the announced deals below will begin first thing Monday morning.

As far as what you'll find for less, the list is already pretty big. There's a good mix of Amazon Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, Fire TV streaming devices, Echo smart speakers, and more. Some products that usually avoid hitting the discount chopping block have been included, too.

Huawei will reportedly lay off hundreds of US workers

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 11:15 AM PDT

Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei is reportedly preparing to lay off hundreds of workers in the United States, reports The Wall Street Journal. The company has struggled in recent months after the Trump administration placed a de facto ban on US sales to the company, citing potential security threats and amidst the ongoing US-Chinese trade war.

According to the WSJ, Huawei is planning to lay off workers at a research subsidiary called Futurewei Technologies, which operates a number of research labs. Huawei will reportedly allow some Chinese employees the option of relocating back to China to remain within the company. Some employees have apparently already been notified that they will be let go, with other layoffs planned in the...

I have questions about this disturbing Jeff Bezos action figure

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Last year, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos tweeted a picture of himself at his Mars 2018 conference, walking alongside one of Boston Dynamic's Spot robots. Now, a toy company has provided a super-detailed, posable action figure of the world's richest man, which you can conceivably find, purchase, and keep in your home for reasons we have yet to discern.

A company called Ntwrk, a "mobile-first shopping" app, apparently sent the toy to a bunch of tech journalists, although I can't seem to find any more information on this particular toy, which is perhaps a good thing considering it is disturbingly creepy.

In the meantime, I have questions. Twenty-seven of them, to be exact.

American Airlines cancels Boeing 737 Max flights through November

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 08:57 AM PDT

Just a couple of days after United Airlines announced that it was canceling more than 5,000 Boeing 737 Max flights through October, American Airlines has announced that it would suspend flights on the beleaguered passenger jet through November 2nd.

The airliner had canceled flights through September 3rd, but after the FAA discovered a new problem with the aircraft's flight computer, it opted to push the aircraft's return to service until later in the fall.

American Airlines says that the removal of the aircraft means that it will have to cancel around 115 flights each day, and has said that it will cost the company upwards of $185 million during its second quarter this year.

In its release, the company says that it "confident that...

This video reimagines the iPhone as a retro Macintosh

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 08:00 AM PDT

Imagine if Apple, instead of inventing something completely new for its original iPhone design, had maintained the look of its iconic Macintosh or the iMac G3. The phone would be more eye-catching than the all-glass gadget we have now, if designer FuturePunk's imagined, digital 3D models are any indication. This week, he published a look at what he thinks Apple could have created if it modeled the iPhone off either of those PCs. He recreates their commercials, too, except starring the phones.

While, yes, it would be completely impractical to have a phone fully based on either of these computers, particularly the Macintosh with its clunky keys, a transparent iMac G3-style iPhone would be incredible, especially in the classic "Bondi blue."...

Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire is more electric motorcycle than I’ll ever need

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 08:00 AM PDT

There's not a lot I can tell you from the 20 minutes I spent riding Harley-Davidson's first electric motorcycle this weekend at the Formula E race in Brooklyn, New York. One thing I can tell you, though, is it's certainly more electric motorcycle than I'd ever need.

That may not be the case for you, and if you have any interest, you should try to ride one at a dealer when they arrive later this year. There's a very good chance that my needs and desires are much different from yours. For instance, I have a motorcycle license, but I don't own a bike. I enjoy riding motorcycles and motor scooters (especially electric ones) around New York City, but I rarely leave the city with them. I simply don't spend a lot of time on two-wheelers, and so...

Why you should really, really update your Logitech wireless dongle

Posted: 14 Jul 2019 07:00 AM PDT

Three and a half years ago, a security researcher broke into my laptop without ever needing to touch it. He didn't even need its network address. All he had to do was sniff out my Logitech wireless mouse's tiny USB receiver, fire off a few lines of code, and start typing things that appeared on my screen. He could have wiped my hard drive, installed malware, or worse, much as if he'd had physical access to my PC.

Practically any Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard was vulnerable to this issue, they said. It was the kind of hack I'd laugh at in a terrible hacker movie — the kind that seems too convenient* to actually exist.

But when I wrote about the so-called "MouseJack" hack in 2016, I figured that was that. I'd given the issue...
