Google is banning a Chinese developer from the Play store for violating its advertising policies. CooTek, which is listed on the NYSE and is probably best known in the West for its TouchPal keyboard replacement, no longer has access to Google's ad platforms and has had dozens of apps removed altogether.

The news was reported by BuzzFeed following an investigation from Lookout that showed hundreds of CooTek apps using an invasive adware plugin called BeiTaAd. This plugin reportedly sent aggressive ads to users even when the phone or the app wasn't in use, which Lookout researcher Kristina Balaam said could "render the phones nearly unusable."

CooTek said it would remove BeiTaAd, but BuzzFeed and Lookout subsequently discovered that many...

The flamethrower drone will soon be a thing you can buy

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 06:15 PM PDT

In 2015, a Connecticut teenager raised the question of whether our robots have the right to bear arms when he jury-rigged a working flamethrower — and separately, a semiautomatic pistol — to his drone.

But this Thursday, for better or worse, you'll be able to easily build a flying flamethrower yourself. You're looking at a the Throwflame TF-19 Wasp, a functional flamethrower attachment for commercial-grade heavy lift drones that can hit targets up to 25 feet away, with a one-gallon fuel tank that can produce a stream of fire for 100 seconds, according to the company.

Mind you, the $1,499 price for the flamethrower won't get it up in the sky, as you'll need to provide the drone, too — which you may need to piece together since commercial...

The LG G8 can now tap to pay at practically any magstripe sales terminal in the US

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 03:00 PM PDT

Four years after Samsung introduced a tap-to-pay mobile wallet that works practically anywhere your credit card does — even older magnetic-stripe card readers — and two years after LG started testing it in Korea, LG's rival LG Pay has finally arrived in the United States.

That might be pretty intriguing if you're an LG smartphone owner, because it's a way more flexible payment tech than most other rivals on the market. Where Apple Pay and Google Pay only work with newer payment terminals that support near-field communication (NFC), LG Pay allows your phone to generate a magnetic signal that looks — to the reader — just like you swiped a traditional magstripe credit card. That's been an exclusive selling point for Samsung phones up to...

Sprint says hackers accessed sensitive subscriber info through a Samsung website

Sprint is informing customers today of a serious security breach that has exposed subscriber information like billing addresses, phone numbers, and other detailed account information, according to ZDNet. The breach is a result of vulernability, the details of which are currently unknown, in a Samsung website advertising an "add a line" feature for active Sprint account holders.

Sprint explained the breach in a letter sent out to consumers that was obtained by ZDNet. In the letter, Sprint says it was informed of the "unauthorized access" back in late June:

On June 22, Sprint was informed of unauthorized access to your Sprint account using your account credentials via the Samsung.com "add a line" website. We take this matter, and all...

Nomad’s latest charging cables are made of actual Kevlar

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 02:32 PM PDT

Accessory company Nomad is overhauling its line of charging cables across the board with a major redesign that adds a whole bunch of Kevlar — actual, licensed Kevlar — to the mix for what promises to be even tougher cables than the company's already-strong cords.

The new cables feature Kevlar K29, an industrial version of the material that's used in cables (like these charging cords) and also body and vehicle armor, which might make it a bit overkill for charging a phone. Nomad is using the Kevlar both for an braided exterior, as well as for a central internal core for the new cables, which should make them pretty tough to break.

The new Kevlar design is rolling out across Nomad's entire lineup of cables, with 11 different cords of...

Google Maps can now show you where bike sharing stations are and how many bikes they have

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 02:04 PM PDT

Google Maps is adding support for bike sharing stations in a big way, with the company rolling out a new integration that will offer users information on docked bike sharing services like Citi Bike directly in the app.

The new integration is made possible from data provided by Ito World, which provides information on where to find a bike sharing station, how many bikes are there, and whether or not there's an empty space waiting for you to dock your bike when you arrive at your destination.

The feature has previously been in testing in New York City for the last year, and now is expanding to 23 more cities: Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Chicago, Dublin, Hamburg, Helsinki, Kaohsiung,...

Detective Pikachu, the live-action mystery movie from director Rob Letterman and Warner Bros. Pictures, has surpassed Duncan Jones' Warcraft as the highest-grossing video game film of all time with $436 million in worldwide ticket sales.

Warcraft, produced by Legendary Pictures (the same company that made Detective Pikachu) and based on the Blizzard Entertainment fantasy franchise, was the previous record-holder since 2016, when it ousted Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time with its $433 million worldwide gross. Warcraft's success at the time was largely thanks to an enormous marketing campaign in China that translated to then-record overseas ticket sales.

However, neither of those films came close to D...

HBO dominated the 2019 Emmy nominations, thanks to Game of Thrones

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 12:36 PM PDT

HBO

After Netflix beat out HBO last year for total Emmy nominations, HBO returned to its usual dominant position in 2019, earning a whopping 137 total Emmy nominations, thanks to Game of Thrones' final season.

The network secured a total of 32 nominations for Game of Thrones, breaking the previous record held by NYPD Blue (26 nominations in 1994). HBO's other 105 nominations this year came from series like Barry (17 nominations) and Chernobyl (19 nominations). HBO also earned nearly three times as many nominations as the four traditional networks (ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS) combined.

There's no denying that Game of Thrones is a rare cultural juggernaut. More than 45 million people tuned in for the show's final episodes, according to HBO. It's...
