Tinder parent company Match Group has just become the latest high-profile software maker to stiff Google on its 30 percent fee for all Android transactions through the Play Store. To avoid paying the company on in-app purchases of subscriptions to services like Tinder Gold and Tinder Plus, Match Group will now encourage users to enter credit card details directly into Tinder's systems, according to Bloomberg, citing new research by Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter.

The move is similar to one made by popular video game developer Epic Games, which last year released the Android version of battle royale hit Fortnite via its own downloadable launcher to avoid the 30 percent cut. Notably, Tinder is Match Group's most profitable entity, and...

The Witcher’s first trailer brings Henry Cavill’s Geralt to life

Posted: 19 Jul 2019 03:07 PM PDT

The first trailer for Netflix's live-action Witcher series has arrived, and unfortunately does not include main character Geralt in a bathtub.

It's evident The Witcher is ready to take over for Game of Thrones as people's new, favorite fantasy series. The trailer teases the magical Geralt's story, as he and those around him prepare to take on a series of evil forces. There are teases of black magic, giant creatures and, of course, political turmoil. Netflix isn't trying to make a magical drama designed for teens; it's a pretty adult interpretation.

The Witcher is one of Netflix's most anticipated shows. The company caught attention when it announced that Henry Cavill (Superman in the DC Cinematic Universe films) would play the central...

The trailer for Steven Universe: The Movie introduces a new villain and a new look

Posted: 19 Jul 2019 03:06 PM PDT

As of the end of the last season of Cartoon Network's beloved science-fiction-and-feelings animated series Steven Universe, things seemed pretty ideal for the heroes. The series' biggest villains broke down and talked about their emotions, and came at least provisionally to terms with their past mistakes. It looked like Steven might finally be able to return to Earth and live as normal a life as a half-human, half-alien kid who's constantly in the middle of cosmic wars can live.

So of course the upcoming animated film introduces a whole new villain.

The trailer, which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, gives Steven a slightly new look — he's a little older, a little taller, a little thinner, and overall less of a tiny wee donut of a boy —...

Google has been steadily building out its Bluetooth Fast Pair features for the last few years, and the company just revealed the next wave of updates that should make managing compatible Bluetooth devices even better on Android.

The biggest update is said to be arriving "later this year" and will add deeper support for truly wireless headphones. Headphones that support fast pair will eventually be able to show the individual battery life data for the case and each earbud independently, as well as pop-up that information when opening or closing the case.

Fast Pair headphones will also start appearing in Google's Find My Device app "soon", making it easier to track down a missing pair of headphones in the future, as well...

Publishers are pissed about Amazon’s upcoming Audible Captions feature

Earlier this week, Audible revealed that it was working on a new feature for its audiobook app: Audible Captions, which will use machine learning to transcribe an audio recording for listeners, allowing them to read along with the narrator. While the Amazon-owned company claims it is designed as an educational feature, a number of publishers are demanding that their books be excluded, saying these captions are "unauthorized and brazen infringements of the rights of authors and publishers."

On its face, the idea seems useful, much in the same way that I turn on subtitles for things that I'm watching on TV, but publishers have some reason to be concerned: it's possible that fewer people will buy distinct e-book or physical books if they...

The first clip from Rick and Morty season 4 stars a diabolical Taika Waititi

Posted: 19 Jul 2019 01:37 PM PDT

There's been a Rick and Morty-sized hole in our hearts since October 2017, but San Diego Comic-Con's first look at the show's fourth season promises new hijinks soon.

The clip stars an alien intern, voiced by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, who has developed an app that Morty and his father Jerry want removed from the internet. It doesn't exactly go as planned. Although this isn't a full season trailer, it is one of the longest Rick and Morty clips we've gotten in close to two years.

Prior to Comic-Con, co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about the new season, confirming that stars like Waititi, Paul Giamatti, and Kathleen Turner all made vocal appearances on the show.

"I think...

Hulu has released Veronica Mars season 4 a week early

Posted: 19 Jul 2019 01:10 PM PDT

Hulu

Well, this is a surprise. Hulu had previously announced that its revival of the mystery series Veronica Mars would debut on July 26th, but the service has bumped the release date up by a week. The eight-episode fourth season is streaming now.

The series, which first debuted in 2004 on UPN, followed high-school student Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) as she worked to figure out who murdered her best friend, Lily Kane (Amanda Seyfried), all while trying to navigate the ins and outs of life in high school (and by season 3, college). The series became a cult classic. A couple of years after it was canceled, creator Rob Thomas kickstarted a 2014 feature film sequel, which took place nearly a decade after the events of the series.

On Friday, President Trump commemorated the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 with a photo opportunity in the Oval Office, where he spent a lot of time questioning his administration's own policy for deep space human exploration. Surrounded by NASA officials, Moon walkers, and lawmakers, Trump repeatedly asked NASA's administrator, Jim Bridenstine, why astronauts couldn't go straight to Mars instead of going to the Moon first.

"To get to Mars, you have to land on the Moon, they say," Trump asked Bridenstine, according to a recording provided by Politico. "Any way of going directly without landing on the Moon? Is that a possibility?"

Bridenstine, who was standing...

These white Converse sneakers change colors when you step into the sun

Multi-dimensional colors are in again: you see it in smartphones that glisten into different colors as you change angles, game consoles are available in all kinds of color, and now we have shoes that change color when you step outside. The new Converse collection, in collaboration with Chinatown Market, is like a mood ring for your feet: they look like regular white sneakers but change colors when exposed to UV light.

Depending on how much UV light the shoe receives, the intensity also changes from pastel shades to vivid colors. The transformation happens pretty quickly, as demonstrated by Chinatown Market in an Instagram teaser.

Lyft is adding New York City subway directions to its app in the latest bid by the ride-hailing industry to make peace with public transportation.

The rollout of transit directions in the app will take place over the next several weeks, according to Bloomberg. With the update, Lyft's app will show users subway stations and bus stops, as well as docks for Citi Bike, the bike-share system owned by the ride-hail company. The features are designed to keep users in the app rather than switching to a different product for public transportation directions.

All New York users will receive the updated app by the end of September. In addition to subway and bus information, Lyft customers will also see commuter rail options like Long Island Rail...
