Samsung has reportedly fixed the Galaxy Fold

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 07:57 PM PDT

Samsung has redesigned the Galaxy Fold to address the screen durability issues that torpedoed its launch, Bloomberg reports, with the folding phone soon to begin commercial production. The company still isn't able to confirm a release date, however, and one person told Bloomberg that the phone is unlikely to resurface at next month's Galaxy Note 10 event.

Samsung is said to have made the screen's protective film "flow into the bezels so it would be impossible to peel off by hand." Previous review units shipped with a film that looked like a removable screen protector, even though removing it would actually destroy the screen — as some reviewers found out.

The Verge's unit had a different problem, however, developing a strange bulge that...

House lawmakers officially ask Facebook to put Libra cryptocurrency project on hold

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:35 PM PDT

House Democrats are requesting Facebook halt development of its proposed cryptocurrency project Libra, as well as its digital wallet Calibra, until Congress and regulators have time to investigate the possible risks it poses to the global financial system.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), the chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, hinted at a move like this last month shortly after the project was announced. Waters's letter today, sent to Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, and Calibra CEO David Marcus, formalizes that request from a few weeks ago. Aside from Waters, the letter is signed by House Finance's subcommittee leaders.

"If products and services like these are left improperly...

Android co-founder Andy Rubin accused of cheating wife out of fortune while running a sex ring

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:03 PM PDT

Android co-founder Andy Rubin has been accused of cheating his wife out of millions through a prenuptial agreement obtained under false pretenses, according to documents unsealed in connection with a related case.

The documents — first unearthed by BuzzFeed's Ryan Mac — allege that Rubin forced his wife Rie Hirabaru Rubin into the prenuptial agreement just weeks before she was scheduled to give birth to their child, negotiating specific terms until three days before the couple's city hall wedding. The lawsuit seeks to annul that agreement, which resulted in Rie being cut out of much of the wealth Andy obtained from Google and his later Essential project.

As a complaint, the document is only an allegation and has not been confirmed by the...

Epic Games will cover refunds of Shenmue III to protect developer after backlash

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:00 PM PDT

Game studio Ys Net, its publishing partner Deep Silver, and distributor Epic Games have come to a solution to appease angry fans over the PC exclusivity of upcoming, Kickstarter-backed game Shenmue III.

In an upcoming survey, the trio plan to offer refunds to any backers upset the game won't be available on Valve's Steam storefront at launch, after Epic secured exclusivity of the PC version of the game for its own marketplace. You'll also be able to transfer your PC version to a PS4 one if you so choose instead, while those who want Steam keys one year after release, once the exclusivity window closes, can request them in the survey.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney also says his company will be covering the costs of these refunds, so as not to...

Tesla rebounds from bad first quarter by setting new record for deliveries

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 01:38 PM PDT

After a slow start to the year, Tesla announced Tuesday that it made and delivered a record number of cars in the second quarter of 2019. The electric automaker produced 87,048 vehicles in the quarter, and delivered "approximately 95,200," after having finished the first quarter of the year with some 10,000 cars listed as "in transit."

Of the total cars produced, 72,531 were Model 3s. Tesla also delivered 77,550 Model 3s in the quarter.

Those numbers were above the expectations of industry analysts, many of whom expected closer to 91,000 deliveries this past quarter. Tesla's previous best quarter came at the end of 2018, amid the company's mad push to meet its own sky-high goals for the year.

Grubhub says its contract allowed it to create fake restaurant websites

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 01:38 PM PDT

Grubhub CEO Matt Maloney has responded to reports that his company creates fake websites for its restaurant partners, claiming that, according to its contract agreements, these businesses have signed away permission for Grubhub to engage in the marketing tactic on their behalf. According to a partial Grubhub contract obtained by the Los Angeles Times, a provision states that Grubhub "may create, maintain and operate a microsite ("MS") and obtain the URL for such MS on restaurant's behalf."

Grubhub provided The Verge with a similar snippet. Grubhub charges varying tiers of commission fees, the highest being "marketing commission" at 20-plus percent. The contract does not explicitly specify whether these microsites are considered...

FCC filing is latest evidence that Apple will soon update its most affordable MacBook Pro

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 01:08 PM PDT

A filing for an unreleased MacBook Pro was briefly accessible on the Federal Communication Commission's website today before later being pulled. The FCC documentation refers to model number A2159, which lines up with MacBook-related filings Apple made with the Eurasian Economic Commission last month.

Digging into the FCC filing offers a closer glimpse of the product it pertains to: we learn that it has a 13-inch screen and shares the same dimensions as the current 13-inch MacBook Pro.

With that information factored in, the best guess is that we'll soon see an update to the 13-inch MacBook Pro without the Touch Bar. The "MacBook Escape," as it's sometimes referred to, has gone ignored in Apple's lineup...

Why AI can’t fix content moderation

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:22 PM PDT

Content moderation is a long-standing challenge for big tech companies. Many of the issues surrounding content moderation have been reported on extensively by The Verge, and they're now the focus of UCLA professor Sarah T. Roberts' new book Behind the Screen: Content Moderation in the Shadows of Social Media.

Below is a lightly edited excerpt of Roberts and Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel's discussion about why artificial intelligence is not the solution to the content moderation problem.

You can hear this and more in the latest episode of The Vergecast.

My colleague and Silicon Valley editor Casey Newton says to me, "If you live in a world where your dream is to replace human beings with math, then of course you're going to treat...

EV startup Rivian has poached dozens from Ford, McLaren, Tesla, and Faraday Future

Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:10 PM PDT

Since coming out of stealth mode last year, Michigan-based EV startup Rivian has announced big investments from Amazon and Ford. At the same time, the startup has more than doubled in size since last spring, and now employs 750 people. The startup has hired dozens of employees from Ford, McLaren, and Tesla, according to hundreds of LinkedIn profiles viewed by The Verge, though the biggest contributor is a fizzling would-be rival, Faraday Future. Rivian has hired about 50 former Faraday Future employees, including at least 34 since the struggling startup put workers on furlough late last year.

In addition, The Verge has learned Rivian recently appointed its first chief technology officer: Mike Bell, a longtime Apple VP who helped bring...
