Russia targeted election systems in all 50 states, Senate concludes Posted: 25 Jul 2019 04:21 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee has concluded that election systems in all 50 states were targeted by hackers linked to the Russian government, according to a heavily redacted report released today. In 2017, we'd heard 39 states, and the Department of Homeland Security officially admitted that 21 states had been targeted later that year. It was only this April that a joint report from DHS and the FBI indicated that Russian hackers may have tried to probe every single U.S. state's election infrastructure for flaws. Because the relevant sections of today's report are mostly blacked out, it's not clear how sure the Senate Intelligence Committee is that Russia... |
Equifax owes you a lot more, but here’s how to get $125 from this week’s settlement Posted: 25 Jul 2019 02:18 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The US credit reporting agency Equifax settled earlier this week with the Federal Trade Commission over the massive 2017 data breach that exposed hundreds of millions of Americans' Social Security numbers and other sensitive data. Now, you can finally file a claim to collect on the $700 million settlement, which contains a $380,500,000 consumer restitution fund, as part of the class action lawsuit. The FTC this morning posted the claim website, where you can both check if you were affected by the company's breach and fill out the relatively simple form that lets you specify to which claims you feel entitled. Thankfully, it is not operated by Equifax, but by the settlement administrator JND, which handles these types of sprawling class... |
Cheaper Pixel 3A helped Google sell twice as many smartphones last quarter Posted: 25 Jul 2019 02:08 PM PDT Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Google's budget-conscious approach to its Pixel smartphone line appears to be paying off. Google parent company Alphabet posted second quarter earnings for 2019 today, handily beating Wall Street expectations with revenue of $38.9 billion and a profit of $9.9 billion. The profit dwarfs that of the second quarter of 2018, when Google had to dock its net income by a record $5 billion over last year's antitrust settlement. The Google ad machine continues to chug along unfazed by any of the company's numerous scandals surrounding botched YouTube moderation, alleged bias in search results, and looming regulatory threats. (Google's ad business made $32.6 billion this past quarter, a jump of nearly 20 percent.) But the real spotlight this... |
Elon Musk gets $120 million more for his tunnel-boring company Posted: 25 Jul 2019 01:42 PM PDT I went to Elon Musk's Boring Company pep rally | Artist: Alex Castro Elon Musk has secured $120 million in new funding for The Boring Company, the tunnel-digging project he dreamt up while sitting in Los Angeles traffic back in 2016. It's the first outside money to come into The Boring Company, though some of it is from a friendly party: the new fund from venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson's, who has a seat on the boards of directors for both Tesla and SpaceX. The news was first reported by Bloomberg. The $120 million was raised by selling Boring Company stock, and according to a spokesperson, buyers are early-stage venture firms 8VC and Craft Ventures, Vy Capital from the United Arab Emirates, Valor Capital, and DFJ — the firm Jurvetson was ousted from in 2017. The new funding more than doubles the... |
Apple buys Intel’s smartphone modem business Posted: 25 Jul 2019 01:02 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple will acquire "the majority" of Intel's smartphone modem business for $1 billion, the two companies announced today. Around 2,200 Intel employees will join Apple, and Apple will acquire IP and equipment from Intel as well. The transaction is expected to close toward the end of the year. Intel won't be getting out of the modem business entirely. It'll still be able to develop modems for PCs, Internet of Things devices, autonomous vehicles, and seemingly anything that's not a smartphone. Intel CEO Bob Swan said the acquisition will allow the company to focus on developing other 5G technologies. The acquisition means that Apple is now well on the way to producing its own 5G modems for its smartphones, rather than having to rely on... |
Why wasn’t the FTC harder on Facebook? Posted: 25 Jul 2019 12:53 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge On Thursday, the Federal Trade Commission finalized a landmark settlement with Facebook over the company's alleged privacy malpractices accrued over the past year. Whether it was Cambridge Analytica or falsely promising user control over its use of facial recognition, Facebook messed up — big time. But after months of negotiations with the FTC, Mark Zuckerberg's leadership was left virtually untouched, and investors applauded the settlement in the company's earnings call yesterday evening. "Good news on the FTC settlement," one investor said. That agreement included a $5 billion fine, a penalty that's small in comparison to the company's total profits. Mark Zuckerberg (or any future executive) will need to personally sign off on new... |
Discord finally has server folders Posted: 25 Jul 2019 12:50 PM PDT Discord has finally fixed a, ahem, bug where server folders didn't exist. The chat service heard the cries of the video gaming community, and it added server folders today to make it much easier to organize the servers you're participating in. If you're anything like me, then you're in more than 30 Discord servers, and the app has been a bit of a mess to organize the long list on the sidebar. You can now simply drag and drop a server on top of another one to form a folder that will expand when you click on it. You can also assign custom colors and names and arrange these in the sidebar in whatever order you want. This is available immediately in both the desktop and mobile versions of Discord, and it's now far easier to organize the... |
How to find out if your apps will be compatible with macOS Catalina Posted: 25 Jul 2019 12:43 PM PDT Before you upgrade your Mac desktop or laptop to macOS Catalina, which will arrive later in 2019, there's something that you should consider first: if you use 32-bit apps, they won't work on the new macOS update. When Catalina arrives later in 2019, it will support 64-bit apps exclusively, making macOS Mojave (version 10.13) the final major version to support 32-bit apps. Is this change guaranteed to impact you? No, especially if you mainly use Apple software. Apple wrote on a support page that it has worked to transition its own apps to 64-bit for over a decade. However, whether you rely on two apps or 200, it's important to know which ones may be affected. Using this process, I found out that five of the hundred or so apps that I... |
Apple will reportedly begin getting rid of the MacBook’s butterfly keyboard this year Posted: 25 Jul 2019 12:23 PM PDT Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Apple is apparently moving on from its infamous butterfly keyboard. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors), the company will introduce a scissor-switch keyboard design in its 16-inch MacBook Pro, which is expected to go on sale in September. This new keyboard design is said to use a scissor mechanism with glass fibers to reinforce the keys and keep them from breaking. It would also apparently be cheaper to produce. The updated keyboard would allow the keys to travel a bit longer, and it would be a bit more durable. Rumors regarding the shift away from the butterfly keyboard have been circulating recently: Kuo reported earlier this month that the MacBook Air would get the new keyboard, followed by the 16-inch MacBook... |
Hyper Light Drifter is now available on the iPhone and iPad Posted: 25 Jul 2019 11:33 AM PDT Hyper Light Drifter — the gorgeous pixel art "slash 'em up" — is now available on iPhone and iPad devices for $4.99, as the latest top-quality console / PC game to make the jump to mobile. Originally developed by Heart Machine, the iOS port was published by Abylight Studios, which also worked on the Switch port earlier this year. The iOS version features the same Special Edition content that was released on the Switch, which includes a few new areas, items, and enemies. While Abylight Studios claims that the port is "perfectly adapted for Apple devices touch-screen control and optimized to provide an unforgettable experience," it'll be... interesting (to say the least) to see how the game's notoriously tough combat and... |
