Samsung’s profit cut in half on slow sales of memory and flagship phones Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:59 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Samsung Electronics has released second-quarter earnings results in line with its prior guidance, which is to say that they are not great. Operating profit fell 56 percent year-on-year to 6.6 trillion won — the lowest since the company had to deal with the fallout from the 2016 Galaxy Note 7 fire risk — while revenue slid 4 percent to 56.13 trillion won. Samsung puts its troubles largely down to weak market conditions for its all-important semiconductor business, despite a slight bump in demand for memory. The situation is expected to improve somewhat in the second half of the year, though Samsung is warning of "external uncertainties," likely a reference to the implications of various international trade disputes. While revenue was up... |
LG updates Apple-endorsed UltraFine 5K Display with iPad Pro support Posted: 30 Jul 2019 07:48 PM PDT LG has announced an updated version of its 27-inch UltraFine 5K Display, the monitor that Apple endorsed as the best option for the current generation of MacBook Pros but which has been unavailable for some months. The new model boosts power delivery to 94 watts and now offers USB-C connectivity as well as Thunderbolt 3. That means it'll work with the 2018 iPad Pro over USB-C, though it's not clear what resolution will be supported. Otherwise, the product appears to be basically identical to its predecessor, so our buying advice will likely remain the same. LG's UltraFine Displays have extremely good panels and excellent native support for macOS features, even including True Tone when hooked up to a compatible laptop. But their... |
Twitter suspends a conspiracy-filled account after Trump retweets it Posted: 30 Jul 2019 05:14 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitter suspended an account that peddled conspiracy-laden content on Tuesday after President Donald Trump retweeted it earlier in the day, according to The Daily Beast. The account, which operated under the display name "LYNN THOMAS," was reportedly suspended for breaking Twitter's rules against "using multiple accounts to artificially amplify or disrupt conversations." It's the second account that the president has retweeted that Twitter has suspended for violating its rules. The tweet Trump retweeted said, in all caps, "DEMOCRATS ARE THE ONLY ONES INTERFERING IN OUR ELECTIONS. WHY DO YOU THINK THEY SO STRONGLY OPPOSE VOTER ID?" It also included a brightly-colored image that... |
Apple baits Trump by saying it wants to keep making Mac Pro in the US Posted: 30 Jul 2019 03:21 PM PDT Photo by Nilay Patel / The Verge During this afternoon's call with investors, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company aims to assemble the 2019 Mac Pro in the United States — just as it did with the previous "trash can" design of the high-end desktop. Apple highlighted the US assembly of that device and even made a video promoting it. But the company made no mention of having the same plans for the Mac Pro it revealed at WWDC in June. Yet according to Cook, US assembly is exactly why Apple requested an exclusion from the US government's tariffs on importing goods from China. If Apple gets hit with an added fee for those parts, it might consider the whole plan unfeasible. "In terms of the exclusions, we've been making the Mac Pro in the US. We want to continue to do... |
Sony warns PlayStations will cost more if Chinese tariffs continue Posted: 30 Jul 2019 02:54 PM PDT Sony has warned that PlayStation consoles will become more expensive if the Trump administration goes ahead with higher tariffs on more Chinese exports, the WSJ reports. The Trump administration, which raised tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods this past May, is now threatening to expand tariffs to an additional $300 billion of Chinese exports, which would include video game consoles. In preparation for the potential expansion of tariffs, Sony says it's now considering its options, including passing the cost of production onto its consumers. (The WSJ paints the price increase as a necessary step if the tariffs continue, though one Sony exec clarified that nothing has been decided yet.) "We... |
NASA to help SpaceX, Blue Origin, and more develop technologies for Moon and Mars travel Posted: 30 Jul 2019 02:35 PM PDT As NASA forges ahead to the Moon — and eventually to Mars — the agency is hoping to get some help from the commercial space industry. Today, NASA announced new partnerships with various aerospace organizations, aimed at advancing technologies related to landing on other planets, navigating the lunar surface, transferring propellant in space, and more — all of which could be critical for future missions. Thirteen companies now hold a total of 19 partnerships with NASA through the agency's Announcement of Collaborative Opportunity initiative, or ACO. In October, NASA put out a call for proposals from the industry, asking them to detail different technologies they'd like to develop through the program. Now, the companies that have been... |
Facebook just published an update on its futuristic brain-typing project Posted: 30 Jul 2019 02:14 PM PDT A prototype of a non-invasive headset design — which wasn't used in the typing experiment. | Facebook Reality Labs Facebook has released an update on its ambitious plans for a brain-reading computer interface, thanks to a team of Facebook Reality Labs-backed scientists at the University of California, San Francisco. The UCSF researchers just published the results of an experiment in decoding people's speech using implanted electrodes. Their work demonstrates a method of quickly "reading" whole words and phrases from the brain — getting Facebook slightly closer to its dream of a noninvasive thought-typing system. People can already type with brain-computer interfaces, but those systems often ask them to spell out individual words with a virtual keyboard. In this experiment, which was published in Nature Communications today, subjects listened to... |
Apple confirms the Apple Card is coming in August Posted: 30 Jul 2019 02:14 PM PDT The Apple Card, the company's credit card that was announced at its services event this past spring, will begin accepting applications in August, the company confirmed during its 2019 third fiscal quarter earnings call. "Thousands of Apple employees are using the Apple Card every day in a beta test and we will begin to roll out the Apple Card in August," Apple CEO Tim Cook said. The Apple Card will come in both a digital and a physical, titanium card form. However, the Apple Card won't use a traditional 16-digit card number, CVV code, or expiration date as a personal identifier. Instead, it will generate those numbers randomly during each transaction to keep purchases secure. The numbers are also generated on-device, with the company... |
David Dobrik helped redefine YouTube culture four years ago, and people are celebrating Posted: 30 Jul 2019 01:55 PM PDT David Dobrik is celebrating four years on YouTube this week. It's an odd anniversary, but the celebration happening right now on Twitter and Instagram is an acknowledgment of how much influence Dobrik's videos have had on YouTube culture. Dobrik, who has more than 13 million subscribers, started his career on Vine. When he came to YouTube in 2015 — alongside other popular Vine stars like Jake and Logan Paul, Lele Pons, and Liza Koshy — he brought the app's quick-cut style with him, using short run times and fast cuts to his advantage. It propelled him to huge success, and it led to a wave of creators who copied him, many of whom continue to shape the site's content today. Leaning into the Vine aesthetic that made him popular put him in... |
Black Shark 2 Pro shows that gaming phones are here to stay Posted: 30 Jul 2019 01:49 PM PDT If you know anyone who says phones have become boring and predictable, point them to gaming phones. The Black Shark 2 Pro, which was announced this week, prioritizes some specs that you probably won't hear the largest phone makers mention onstage, or at least not yet. The Pro is a slightly revised model of the Black Shark 2, which was released earlier this year. The updated version improves on the touch response speed of the display by around seven milliseconds, down to 34.7ms from 43.5ms. That might not seem like much, but mere milliseconds (factoring in the screen's touch response speed and network ping) could mean the difference between a win and a loss in competitive play. For context, the newly announced Asus ROG Phone II has a... |
