Samsung’s earnings were likely hit by Huawei but boosted by Apple Posted: 04 Jul 2019 06:45 PM PDT Samsung Electronics expects its second-quarter operating profit to have more than halved from a year previously, falling about 56 percent to 6.5 trillion won ($5.56 billion), according to earnings guidance released by the company today. Revenue is projected to slide about 4 percent to 56 trillion won ($47.89 billion). This would be Samsung's lowest profit since Q3 2016, when the company was hit by the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Samsung doesn't provide full explanations along with its earnings guidance, but analysts suggest the Huawei crackdown could have had a significant impact on Samsung's critical chip business. On the other hand, it's also likely to help Samsung's smartphone sales in certain markets. Things could have been even worse for... |
France wants to fine Facebook over hate speech Posted: 04 Jul 2019 12:41 PM PDT On Thursday, French lawmakers approved a measure designed to force tech companies like Facebook and Google to remove content the French government deems "hate speech," the Associate Press reported earlier today. The provision, which is part of a larger internet regulation bill, was adopted by the lower house of the French Parliament on Thursday. If it were to be fully approved, it would create a 24 hour deadline for social networks to remove hate speech from their platforms once it's flagged. According to the New York Times, the bill will move to the body's upper chamber, their Senate, for discussion next. The language included in the measure requires companies to remove any content that incites or encourages hateful violence or... |
Apple’s iCloud and store systems are down for some users Posted: 04 Jul 2019 12:10 PM PDT Some Apple users are reporting that they are experiencing issues with iCloud, which appears to have also affected services at the company's physical retail stores, according to 9to5Mac. Apple's Systems Status page reports that iCloud's Calendars, Contacts, and Reminders are currently affected by the ongoing outage, and that some users might have issues. The company says that issues affecting Apple Pay, Documents, Find my Friends, Find My iPhone, Game Center, iCloud Sign In, and other services have since been resolved. Users on Twitter noted that the issues have extended to Apple Stores — some aren't able to get their devices fixed, while others aren't able to complete purchases. It's the second outage for the company this year, and... |
Get to know Halle Bailey, the new Little Mermaid, through her YouTube covers Posted: 04 Jul 2019 11:30 AM PDT We live in a time where almost every new musical prodigy has formed an identity on YouTube long before they break through to mainstream Hollywood. Halle Bailey, the new face of Disney's Little Mermaid, is a perfect example. Disney announced on Wednesday that Bailey, currently 19-years-old, would play Princess Ariel in the company's upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. She began making a name for herself as an actress on ABC's Grownish, a spinoff of its popular series, Blackish that premiered in 2018, but she developed an even bigger fanbase far before that on YouTube. Halle, alongside her older sister Chloe, have amassed more than one million subscribers on YouTube thanks to their astonishing covers of songs from... |
Netflix released a podcast director’s commentary track for Always Be My Maybe Posted: 04 Jul 2019 10:53 AM PDT There's been one thing that I've wondered about as Netflix cannibalized DVD sales in the last decade: why doesn't the streaming service include things like director commentaries for the films and TV shows that it streams? That seems to be changing — Netflix recently launched a podcast series of director's commentaries called Watching With.... Thus far, Netflix has released two episodes: one for the film Someone Great (featuring director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson), and another for the recently-released Always Be My Maybe which features director Nahnatchka Khan and actor Randall Park. You can access the podcast via Apple Podcasts or Spotify. The audio isn't native on Netflix's platform: you have to fire up the podcast on another device,... |
D-Link agrees to 10 years of security audits to settle FTC case Posted: 04 Jul 2019 10:19 AM PDT After years of litigation and countless security issues, D-Link has settled its case with the Federal Trade Commission over poor security practices. Under the terms of the settlement, the company has agreed to implement a comprehensive security program for its routers and webcams, including third-party security audits every two years until 2030. The company is also required to check for security vulnerabilities before releasing a product, actively monitor for vulnerabilities once a product is released, and accept reports from third-party security researchers. "We sued D-Link over the security of its routers and IP cameras, and these security flaws risked exposing users' most sensitive personal information to prying eyes," said Andrew... |
Watch fireworks obliterate mannequins on the National Mall in wild safety demonstration Posted: 04 Jul 2019 08:30 AM PDT A figure stands on the National Mall in Washington DC, casually dressed in a long-sleeved red t-shirt, carefully balancing a firework on its head. The fuse burns down. There's a boom of sparks and smoke, and suddenly both firework and head are gone.
Welcome to the annual fireworks safety demonstration of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, a government agency known for their delightfully weird social media presence. Here, styrofoam mannequins and ripe watermelons are sacrificed by the federal government, in a ritual which begs its citizens; 'Please, please, don't do that... |
Google is making Night Sight one of the main camera modes on Pixel phones Posted: 04 Jul 2019 07:45 AM PDT Think about the ways you most commonly take pictures with your phone. How often do you take pictures in bad lighting or at night? How often do you capture panoramas? Google appears to have realized that the former scenario is much more likely, and as a result, the company is promoting its Night Sight feature to the main list of camera modes — and moving panoramas an extra tap away. According to 9to5Google, this has already happen in the leaked Android Q beta build that made its way onto the web yesterday. Night Sight takes the place of Panorama as the left-most mode. So if the decision holds when Android Q ships, these are the modes you'll be able to swipe between from the main viewfinder:

US border agency cuts ties with breached surveillance contractor Posted: 04 Jul 2019 06:32 AM PDT US Customs and Border Protection has suspended all federal contracts with a surveillance contractor suspected of suffering a data breach, according to a report from The Washington Post. Perceptics, which sells license-plate scanners and other border control equipment, is now prohibited from contracting with CBP and all other federal agencies. CBP officials listed the cause of the suspension as "evidence of conduct indicating a lack of business honesty or integrity." The suspension appears to be connected to a breach first reported in May, which publicly leaked license plates, traveler pictures and other personal data collected at the border. According to CBP, the breach was the result of a federal contractor copying agency data onto its... |
